A two-week definite strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP which started on the 16th of May has been suspended.

A statement by the national publicity secretary of the Union, Abdullahi Yalwa which directed members of the union to resume work on Monday the 30th of May, stated that within the two weeks of the definite strike, significant inroads were made in four (4) of the items on their list of demands.

OUTCOME OF ASUU-FG MEETING LAST NIGHT

Although ASUU President refused to speak to journalists on the details of the meeting, one of the union members said that there was nothing new except that the government team wanted them to call off the strike for a period of time which they rejected.

But the Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige who spoke to journalists after the meeting claimed the negotiations were fruitful. He said: “We have reached some agreements and we hope that by next week, those agreements will be maturing and the different unions will have something to tell their members, so that they can call off the strike.

“We have put some timelines for some aspects like renegotiation of 2009 agreement in terms of condition of service and wage review. So, we are hopeful that by next weekend, the unions will see a conclusion of that area”.

ASUU Strike: NANS Begins Mass Protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reaffirmed that there would be no going back on the mass action declared by the association to ensure that the nation’s economy is grounded and that no political activities including primaries by political parties take place in Abuja or any part of the country until the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is called off.

Public Relations Officer of NANS, Comrade Victor Ezenagu, in an interview with Channels TV in Abuja on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, gave an update on the national action declared by the leadership of the association on Monday, May 9, 2022, saying protests have commenced already on Tuesday in some states of the federation.

Students of the University of Ilorin have also staged a protest calling on the federal government to yield to the demands of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The protest was held in front of the university gate without hindering vehicular movement.

Armed with placards, the students are particularly unhappy that the federal government has allowed striking to continue unabated.

They said they are tired of sitting at home and called on the government and ASUU to come to an amicable resolution in the interest of the nation.

The student threatened to shoot down the county should the federal government and ASUU refuse to resolve the issue by next week.

Members of the National Executive Council of Academic Staff Union of Universities are currently meeting, The PUNCH has learnt.

A member of the NEC told Punch correspondent that the strike may be extended with the submissions given so far at the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had on Friday stated that the Federal Government and ASUU would resume negotiation this week.

: ASUU Ends Warning Strike; May Begin Indefinte Strike

As the second round of the eight-week warning strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, ends on Monday, the union is poised to go on an indefinite industrial action, Vanguard has gathered.

Sources said the national leadership of the union would make public its decision on Monday.

It was gathered that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the union had earlier given the go-ahead to the national leadership to call out members on indefinite strike if nothing tangible was achieved during the eight weeks of their warning strike.

The union had earlier gone on a month warning strike on February 14 this year, and extended it by another eight weeks which comes to an end on Monday, May 9, 2022.

While ASUU was into the second round of its warning strike, other staff unions in the university system also embarked on strike.

The unions are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Allied Institutions, NASU.

Though the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had met with the leadership of SSANU, NAAT, and NASU, nothing concrete came out of the meetings.

He is yet to meet with ASUU leadership, though he announced last weekend that he would meet with them.

When contacted, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union had not got an invitation from the government’s team as of the weekend.

“We too heard it in the news what the Minister of Labour said about meeting with us, but as we talk, nobody has reached out to us for any meeting. We don’t know when the meeting will be called. However, I think before going to the press to announce any proposed meeting, what ought to have been done is to inform us. Anyway, we are waiting for the meeting when it is called,” he said.

Asked what would be the next line of action, Osodeke said the national leadership of the union would decide that.
