Man City reveal why they bought Kovacic from Chelsea

Manchester City director of football, Txiki Begiristain, has given reasons they decided to get Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea this summer.

Kovacic’s move to the Premier League champions was confirmed on Tuesday.

City manager, Pep Guardiola, has been keen to bolster his midfield, after they missed out on Jude Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid this month.

Captain Ilkay Gundogan has also completed a free transfer to Barcelona on Monday.

Begiristain, speaking at Kovacic’s unveiling, said: “He can play as a 6 or an 8, has plenty of experience at top level clubs and he understands the Premier League.

Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has agreed a two-year deal with Serie A giants Inter Milan.

Azpilicueta is set to become the latest player to exit Chelsea this summer.

The likes of N’Golo Kante, Edourd Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and Hakim Ziyech have departed the London club.

Azpilicueta is now the latest player who is on the verge of bringing the curtains on his time at the Blues.

According to Romano, the Spanish defender’s contract is set to be terminated soon which will pave the way for his move to Inter.

The 33-year-old right-back joined Chelsea from Olympique Marseille in 2012.

During his time at Chelsea, Azpilicueta has won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Riyad Mahrez will be the next target for Al-Ahli if the Saudi Arabian club can wrap up deals for Roberto Firmino and Edouard Mendy.

Goalkeeper Mendy is set to become the latest Chelsea player to switch to the Saudi Pro League – following in the footsteps of N’Golo Kante and Kalidou Koulibaly – while Firmino will have a medical at Al-Ahli after leaving Liverpool as a free agent.

Manchester City star Mahrez is next on the list and he will be offered £43million-a-year plus bonuses for a two-year contract.

It’s understood that Mahrez, who is currently on holiday in the south of France, is interested in ending his career in Saudi.

He will be 33 in February and the Al-Ahli offer is five-times bigger than the £8.5m-a-year contract extension he signed at City last summer.
