My son has a reading table and chair that I happily and proudly bought for him, but to my disappointment, he hates it and refuses to use it. He says 'The chair is too hard'.

Because I can't let precious money and the lovely reading chair go to waste, I'll say, 'Sit on it like that, or use a pillow. Aren't all your school chairs wooden?'

Then one day I happened to sit on it for a video call and I couldn't believe how hard it was. My butt hurt throughout and I couldn't change positions to another seat! Even using a pillow didn't help! I couldn't believe I had been forcing him to sit on something that bad.

And this really goes for everything we do as parents. It is important to see the world through the eyes of our children, that's the only way we'd truly appreciate what they're going through and see from their perspective what our demands sound like to them.

We then learn to respond appropriately to their needs; physical, psychological and emotional.
