Court sacks Senator Bassey Albert for defecting to YPP
..declares seat vacant, fines embattled Senator N5Million
..orders PDP to conduct bye-election in A'Ibom North-East Senatorial District

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sacked Senator Bassey Albert Akpan from the Senate for defecting to the Young Progressives Party, YPP.

The court has also declared his seat vacant and has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacant seat.

The Judge, Hon. Justice Fadima Murtala Aminu in a suit no FHC/ABJ/CS/1249/2022 between the plaintiff being the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the defendants including, Senator Bassey Albert, President of the Senate and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, dated Friday 20th January, 2023, ruled that the embattled Senator who was sponsored to the office of a Senator by the plaintiff, the PDP is no longer qualified to retain his seat in the Senate having resigned his membership of the PDP before the expiration of the period for which he was elected to represent the people of Akwa Ibom North- East Senatorial District.

Relying on section 65(2)[B] of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 the court declared Bassey Albert's seat vacant.

The Court has ordered INEC to conduct a bye-election within 14days of the ruling dated 20th January to fill the vacant seat occasioned by his sack.

Also, the Judge ordered Senator Bassey to “refund to the Senate of the National Assembly all monies, allowances, or other financial and material benefits paid, given or yielded to him after July 15, 2022.

The court ruling reads in parts; “This Honourable Court hereby grants an order of injunction restraining the 1st defendant from claiming to be parading himself as Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District(otherwise known as Uyo Senatorial District) in the Senate”.

“The Ist defendant is to pay N5,000,000as cost of this suit to the plaintiff"(Five Million Naira)”.

The Akwa Ibom State Gubernatorial candidate of the Young Progressives Party, Senator Bassey Albert, has reportedly withdrawn from the 2023 governorship election following recent health and political developments unconnected with his conviction of fraud on December 1, 2022.

Bassey Albert as narrated by closed allies has been strongly advised by his personal physician of over 13 years to withdraw from the 2023 governorship election as he is of unsound health to be the Governor of Akwa Ibom State. According to our source, after Bassey survived a heart attack in December, the physician (name withheld) reiterated that "we have advised Senator Albert to mind stressful conditions and environments, adhere to all his medical regiments, ensure that his blood pressure and sugar are reasonably under proper control because having survived the first heart attack, any other episode [of a heart attack], if it occurs, may be fatal [that is, results in death] and this can occur without any premonitory signs [warning].'

In another development, the Senate seat of the embattled governorship candidate was declared vacant by the court on Friday, 20 January.

Bassey Albert, who is currently on bail, was convicted by the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo on six-count charge of money laundering brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which the court sentenced him to a jail term of seven years on each of the counts.

*Eno and the Future Akwa Ibom Christmas Carols' Festival*

*_To boost tourism in Akwa Ibom State, the PDP standard bearer, Pastor Umo Eno, may need to tie the Akwa Ibom Christmas Carols' Festival, the biggest annual event in the state, into a 12-month tourism calendar, if elected Governor_*

The hugely successful Akwa Ibom Christmas Carols' Festival is indubitably the biggest annual event held in Akwa Ibom State. It has been so since its inception 14 years ago.

The event had long gone international, attracting high-profile guests from all over the world. It even secured a place in the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records. And it incredibly just gets bigger and better every year as seen at the 2022 edition last Friday.

But the event has always been a stand-alone. It has never been linked to any other tourism event in the state, not even to the ongoing annual Christmas Village, holding at Unity Park, Uyo, very close to Ibom Hall grounds, the venue of the carols' festival.

The Gubernatorial Candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, is widely expected to win the March 11, 2023 election and take over from Governor Udom Emmanuel two months later. Considering his hospitality and tourism background, coupled with the promises he has made, it is anticipated that he would work hard to turn Akwa Ibom to a tourist destination.

The carols' festival is already an international success story. As Governor, he may need to leverage on this success by tying the festival into a 12-month tourism calendar and thus extending the prominence the festival has given Akwa Ibom to other tourist attractions in the state.

*The Caribbean Example*

Most Caribbean countries economically depend nearly completely on tourism. And they have 12-month tourism calendars which they advertise heavily in wealthier and more advanced countries like the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom. Such advertisements enable tourists to choose and book events of their interest on time.

Akwa Ibom can learn from the Caribbean. It is possible to have tourists throng the state all year round. Like the Caribbean countries and unlike most Nigerian states, Akwa Ibom boasts of basic infrastructure, especially roads. All what is needed is to develop the tourism industry and crown it with a tourism calendar to attract the world monthly.

*Possible Events in the Tourism Calendar*

Apart from the carols' festival, other stand-alone events that annually attract hordes of visitors to the state are the Democracy celebration in May, the state anniversary/Nigeria’s independence celebrations in September/October and the Governor’s golf tournament in September. All these can be incorporated into the calendar.

In addition, monthly festivals can be created to celebrate known tourist attractions in the state like the slavery sites in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area (LGA), the Mary Slessor sites in Itu and Ibiono Ibom LGAs, the Samuel Bill legacy in Ibeno LGA, Nigeria’s first oil field in Mkpat Enin LGA and the raffia industry in Ikot Ekpene.

The calendar can also contain music, religious, arts and crafts, food, book, sports and cultural festivals to be spread across the year.

Fortunately, Eno has promised to revive the boat regatta in Itu LGA. This, too, can go into the calendar which can contain much more.

*Golf Tourism as Part of the Calendar*

Unknown to most indigenes of the state, Akwa Ibom presently has the best and largest golf course in Nigeria. The golf course is distinctive because of its location, size, vegetation and different characters.

This fact is laid out in this writer’s second book, *_The Seven Wonders of Akwa Ibom_*, published in September 2021.

The opening quotes from some of the leading members of the Ibom Golf and Country Club, contained in Chapter One *(Nigeria’s Best and Largest Golf Course)* of the book, are quite instrctuctive.

Hear them: “I have played golf for over 30 years. I have played all over the world. Ibom Golf Course is the best golf course in Nigeria and West Africa, no doubt. None can compare. IBB Golf Course in Abuja used to be number one in Nigeria. This is now the number one in Nigeria. And you feel fulfilled when you play golf here. That is why I come here every three months.”
- Captain Idris Wada, immediate past Governor of Kogi State (2011-2015).

“Ibom Golf Course has been the best in Nigeria for the last three years. It remains the best. And in the next two years, I don’t think any golf course in Nigeria can beat it because it takes time to achieve the record. You can quote me anywhere.”
- Samuel Ekpenyong, Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Golf Federation.

“Ibom Golf Course is the best for now in Nigeria and West Africa. It is only in North Africa and South Africa that you may have better golf courses than this. It was designed by an Australian to be world class.”
- Chief Bassey Inuaeyen, President of Ibom Golf and Country Club.

“Ibom Golf and Country Club is the fastest-growing golf club in Nigeria thanks to the facility which happens to be only one of its kind in West Africa – a five-star hotel with an international standard golf course in one location.”

“Ibom Golf Course is the best in Nigeria and West Africa as at today, August 15, 2021.”
- Ochayi Emmanuel, Manager of Ibom Golf Course.

The sub-chapter, *Ibom Golf Course Compared to Others*, further defines the golf course.

Excerpts: _Ibom Golf Course is located within the same sprawling premises as the five-star Ibom Icon Hotel in Uruan Local Government Area in the suburb of Uyo, the State Capital. The name of the complex is actually Ibom Icon Hotel and Golf Resort. The hotel manages the course. And, as the Captain of Ibom Golf and Country Club, Barr. Usen Akpabio, who has travelled far and wide to play golf, points out, the co-location with the hotel makes the Ibom Golf Course unique not only in Nigeria but in West Africa as well._

_It is an 18-hole golf course like other standard golf courses. But, according to Ochayi, what differentiates it from the rest in Nigeria is its multiple undulating characters, oscillating between downhill and uphill. He says most golf courses in the country, including the big ones in Lagos and Abuja, have a single character – flat surface. He also draws attention to the unique greenery._

_The immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada, gives his own parameters for scoring Ibom Golf Course above all: “The golf course is well designed. It is very interesting and challenging. It is a green environment. It is very refreshing. It is a fantastic place to come and reduce stress and purge yourself of any tension. I leave here energized and go back home to face the challenges of life.”_

_A former State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Akaninyene Udi, considers Ibom Golf Course “the best in the country in terms of the layout of the holes and the attractiveness of the course.”_

_To Dr. Okon Umoetuk, 85, another former Commissioner, who has played golf for over four decades, Ibom Golf Course is simply incomparable: “In fact, I don’t know of any other golf course in this country that can compare to Ibom Golf Course. The golf courses in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Benin cannot be compared to the one in Akwa Ibom. Ibom Golf Course is the best clearly. If you play golf and you go to other golf courses, you will see that Ibom Golf Course stands out as the best. It is wonderful. It is the best. And you know it is paved round which is not found in other golf courses. It was so well designed and executed.”_

_Yet another ex-Commissioner, Prince Enobong Uwah, who once superintended over the Ministry of Environment, scores Ibom Golf Course high: “I can tell you that this is one of the best courses in West Africa if not the very best. It is a natural course and it has all the makings of a good course – the natural scenery and distance.”_

_He believes the quality of the course makes golf compelling for Akwa Ibom indigenes: “We have a wonderful facility – world class. It would be ridiculous for me and other Akwa Ibom indigenes not to make use of this facility.”_

_On his part, the Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Golf Federation, Mr. Samuel Ekpenyong, states that Ibom Golf Course beats all others in Nigeria because of its design and vegetation, insisting that “there is no other golf course with such design and greens in the country.”_

_The Member representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency in the House of Assembly, Barr. Otobong Bob, gives his own reason for the course’s primacy: “Ibom Golf Course is second to none. It is the largest in the country. Taking out my personal bias being from Akwa Ibom, I think that Ibom Golf Course stands out as the best golf course in Nigeria. Why do I say so? It is the maintenance of the golf course and the distance covered. A golf course needs to be challenging for you to bring out your best. The golf course is very challenging for anybody.”_

Wada has become a promoter of sorts for the golf course. This is reflected in the sub-chapter, *A Former Governor as Ibom Golf Course’s Chief Promoter*.

Excerpts: _So impressed is Wada with Ibom Golf Course that he has promoted it abroad._

_“I have had to convince people in USA and UK that Ibom Golf Course compares to or even beats some golf courses in those two countries," he reveals. "People don’t believe me that we have a golf course of this standard because Nigeria is not in top world ranking. Even Nigerians there don’t believe until they google and see the layout. It changes their perception of Nigeria.”_

_Wada, a 71-year-old former flying instructor, is proud of the promoter label: “I am a promoter of Ibom Golf Course. I am very proud of this golf course. This is frank. I am not patronizing. This is the absolute truth. What will I gain by flabbergasting?”_

The tourism aspect of the golf course is captured in the sub-chapter, *Tourism*.

Excerpts: _To Obong Godwin Ekpo, the Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Education, the Ibom Golf Course has boosted tourism in Akwa Ibom and the state’s economy as a whole._

_Bob, his counterpart, concurs: “It is a tourist attraction. Almost every weekend, you find people from all parts of the country coming in to play. It boosts the economy. They sleep in this hotel and other hotels in the state. They also patronize our transport system including Ibom Air. Generally, it drives the economy of the state in its own way.”_

_Uko Orok, who has played at the golf course since 2010, illustrates the golf course as a tourist attraction: “The people that this golf course has attracted to this state would never have branched this state if there was no golf course. This golf course has attracted conferences and events to this hotel because it became the only reason the participants have to come. The golf course is a treasure that is hidden.”_

_Udi explicates further: “It is a major tourism attraction in the state. It has drawn a lot of tourism into the state. Almost all the international oil companies in Nigeria hold their annual retreats here so that their workers can play golf. It is the vision of Obong Attah that brought that about and it has now made golf a known game in Akwa Ibom State and boosted sports’ tourism.”_

_Ekpenyong points out that “at a point, it was the golf course that was bringing the hotel revenue.”_

_Uwah is starker: “That hotel survives basically because it is a golf resort. The golf course has helped the hotel. This golf course has attracted a lot of people from outside the state. A lot of people come in from even outside the country. I believe that is part of our tourism development.”_

_Wada admits that “many of the people who stay at the hotel come here because of the golf course and I am one of them.”_

_Akpabio sees the hotel and golf course as mutually dependent for their survival: “A five-star hotel, tucked inside Nwaniba 15 to 20 kilometers from Uyo, could not have survived without a standard golf course. With the five-star hotel within the same facility makes Akwa Ibom a golfing pilgrimage. A golf course alone would not have been as welcoming as a golf course within a five-star hotel facility.”_

_Ochayi, who is a staff member of the hotel, accentuates the symbiotic relationship between the hotel and golf course: “Many people travel from far and stay in Ibom Icon Hotel because they want to play golf. And some come for retreats and conferences at the hotel and they end up playing golf because nobody will see this kind of golf course with the standard and would not want to play golf.”_

*Eno’s Passion for Golf Tourism*

Eno is clearly passionate about golf tourism in the state. In his economic blueprint, ARISE Agenda, he states:“The Obong Attah administration had the foresight of developing the Nwaniba Golf Course to international standard and also the airport in Uyo. Golf is one game that attracts people with huge resources. An annual golf championship can benefit the state in more ways than one. Apart from the traffic it will draw to the state and the resources that come with it, it will expose the state to more investment which would otherwise not have been apparent.”

He may not need to start another golf tournament.

What he may need to do is to include the Ibom Golf and Country Club’s two major annual tournaments, the Governor’s tournament and the Victor Attah birthday tournament in November, in the would-be tourism calendar.

And if such a calendar of golf, carols' festival and other tourism events is actualised, Eno’s dream of turning Akwa Ibom to a destination will easily be achieved.

He has his work cut out.

Senate: Ephraim Inyang lay-off his luxury properties in Banana Island, Ontario for 10m dollars

The sacked Chief of Staff to Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, Ephraim Inyangeyen has allegedly sold his property at Banana Island and his estate in Ontario to a Turkish investor, Mr Ayaz Hamza at the rate of Ten Million Dollars.

Inyangeyen was the Commissioner for works then the Chief of Staff to the governor before his removal from office due to abuse of office and rascality.

He thereafter defected to the Young Progressives Party, YPP for his senatorial ambition since his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP which upholds the principle of zoning did not give him ticket as the slot was for Ikot Abasi federal Constituency which did not favor him.

Inyangeyen had since moved on with his political sojourn in his newly joined party and had been seen attacking his benefactor, gov Emmanuel during campaigns.

It was gathered that the financial burden of campaigns has started weighing the sacked CoS down as he has started disposing some of his properties which he had earlier denied of being the owner.

A reliable source revealed that Mr Inyangeyen sold his estate at Banana Island and Ontario Canada to KIC Holding to sponsor his course which according to him is dead on arrival considering the number of toes he had stepped on when he was the commissioner for works.

Earlier, a former ally to the sacked CoS, Emmanuel Nicholas has called for the prosecution of Mr Ephraim Inyangeyen over corruption and misappropriation of funds while in office.

He disclosed that during his tenure as the Commissioner for works, Inyangeyen built a palatial mansion in Lagos luxury estate, Banana Island as well as Wuse, the Federal capital of Nigeria.

He added, "he also built three major private estates in Shelter Afrique, each of the Estates has 24 three-bedroom flats.

"He bought over a private Estate in Ontario, Canada, which consists of over twenty flats for commercial renting, and also bought an 8-room palatial house for his family,, two sitting room and three different swimming pools.

"Ephraim Inyang purchased a palatial mansion, with a basement in Garrett Mansions, it is the latest phase in the brand-new West End Gate development, in London."

Nicholas in an interview with journalists in Uyo said the erstwhile Commissioner has no moral justification to speak in the public domain as thousands of petitions were written by citizens of the state during his tenure as a result of his corrupt practices.

According to him, "Inyangeyen is a man who has many questions to answer from his stewardship as Commissioner for Works in Akwa Ibom State, but has the boldness to come to the public domain and spit venoms of hypocrisy, borne out of fear that he will soon be prosecuted for his corrupt activities.

"In his days as commissioner for works, the Akwa Ibom State Government received over five thousand petitions, and for years Governor Udom Emmanuel tolerated his excessive corruptible activities, and public outcry for his removal."

He explained that Ephraim returned to Akwa Ibom as a sojourner with a two-bedroom flat he built on Atiku Abubakar way, and stated that where he lived in Lagos was a rented apartment in Ogudu GRA.

He further said that Ephraim Inyangeyen now lives in a massive mansion in Shelter Afrique that has its own electricity sub station, tennis court, massive swimming pool, four meeting halls and a bar while his compound in Ikot Ebiere, Onna local government, has six palatial mansions within a landed property that is on over 8 hectares of land, with three of those houses having a basement building.

“The property has six different guest flats, a chapel that can accommodate more than a thousand people, and an event center that can take up to two thousand persons is also built with well-equipped multi-million naira gym, a lawn tennis Court and farm house that terminates in a river.”

Attempts by a sacked Chief of staff to Governor Udom Emmanuel, and YPP Senatorial candidate in Eket Senatorial District, Mr. Ephraim Inyangeyen to use lies and propaganda to curry favour from the people of Mkpat-Enin Local Government Area, the largest vote basket ahead of the 2023 election has been bursted by stakeholders of the local government area, even as they have described his senate ambition as malaria induced.

A group, Mkpat-Enin. Unity Network in a statement jointly endorsed by its National Co-ordinator, Akpabio Ufot Akpabio, Chapter Co-ordinator, Hon. Joe Akpan, the General Secretary & Director Public Affairs, Hon. Mbat Udoinyang and General Secretary, Barr. Ebeute Ebeute has urged memebrs of the public in general and the people of Eket Senatorial District and Mkpat-Enin in particular to disregard a certain news item making the rounds recently claiming that the senate ambition of the sacked former Commissioner for Works has been endorsed by Ikpa-Ikono and the entire Mkpat-Enin people.

Describing Inyangeyen's senate ambition as an insult to Mkpat-Enin people, Ikot-Abasi Federal Constituency and the Senatorial District, the group reminded sacked former Chief of staff that the 2023 Senate seat in Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District is the turn of Ikot-Abasi Federal Constituency in the spirit of equity and fairness, as Inyangeyen's federal Constituency, Eket would be completing it's term by 2023.

The group further pointed out that even in Ephraim Inyangeyen's local government area, Onna he has no support base for senate ambition, as notable stakeholders in the area including Governor of the state, Mr. Udom Emmanuel who hails from the local government, Paramount Ruler of Onna, Edidem Raymond Inyang, Rt Hon. Pat Ifon, the incumbent House of Reps Member for Eket Federal Constituency, Rt Hon. Nse Essien, the current House of Assembly Member for Onna, Hon. Owodighe Ekpoattai, former House of Reps Member, Otuekong (Barr.) Ini Ikott, former House of Assembly Member and many others have thrown their weight behind the candidate of the PDP, Rt. Hon. Ekong Sampson.

The group noted; “Even in Ephraim Inyangeyen's very Oniong Community, the likes of Hon. Godwin Oton, former Member representing Onna State Constituency, Obong l Godwin Ben a.k.a Black and Nelson Ntia are all backing Ekong Sampson for Senate. This is in addition to the most prominent and influential elders, women and youth segments, including the traditional institution in Oniong and Onna Local Government Area, who are supporting Ekong Sampson for Senate and other PDP Candidates”.

“For some days now, Akparawa Ephraim Inyang-eyen, former Commissioner for Works has been running from pillar to post seeking endorsement from various quarters in Mkpat Enin for his totally misplaced Senate ambition.

“Probably because he cannot find any reasonable person to push the inordinate mobilization for him, he is using a young ostracized civil servant, one Sunday Paul, to run around for him. As a result, some media organizations have carried some misleading headlines purporting how some unknown elements in Ikpa Ikono and Mkpat Enin have ‘endorsed’ Ephraim Inyang for Senate. This is coming at a time Mkpat Enin people are mobilizing massively to have our in-law, Pastor Umo Eno as Governor, and our Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin, Rt Hon.(Barr.) Ekong Sampson, Ph.D as Senator. Mkpat Enin will massively return all PDP Candidates in next year’s general elections.

“Ordinarily, the elders and people of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area would have ignored Ephraim Inyang-eyen’s sponsored publications for want of credibility and facts. However, for the purpose of putting the public in the right perspectives, Mkpat Enin Unity Network would want to re-echoe the firm position of Mkpat Enin and Akwa Ibom South people, generally, that the next Senate seat is clearly zoned to Mkpat Enin, not Onna where Ephraim comes from and has already produced a Senator in the person of Senator Eme Ufot Ekaette.

“Therefore, Ephraim Inyang is insulting Mkpat Enin people and indeed, Akwa Ibom South people by struggling the Senate seat with Mkpat Enin out of his sheer greed and sense of ingratitude. Mkpat Enin is the vote basket of PDP and has for decades, put in so much for the Akwa Ibom Project. We do not deserve this kind of insult from the likes of Ephraim Inyang and his sponsored clowns. Indeed, Ephraim is acting like a conscienceless ingrate, lawless opportunist and power desperado by attacking the well-established Senate zoning arrangement in Akwa Ibom South.

“We are not happy to recall how in the past Ephraim Inyang insulted Mkpat Enin people by calling us ‘Evil People’ because of concerns raised over how he was handling a road supervision in Mkpat Enin. This was not long after the same Ephraim Inyang insulted Eket people by saying they speak from both sides of the mouth when they challenged him about his road handling attitude in the area.It will be unimaginable and insulting on the sensibilities of Mkpat Enin people for Ephraim Inyang-eyen to struggle the senate seat with Mkpat Enin people, himself having been part of the meetings where the Senate seat was zoned to Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency.

“Mkpat Enin people are solidly behind the candidacy of Barr. Ekong Sampson noting that it is appropriate for the rotation of Senate seat which started from Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency and later moved to Eket and then to Oron Federal constituencies, to come back to Ikot Abasi Federal constituency – specifically to Mkpat Enin. Even other political parties have brought their senatorial candidates from Mkpat Enin out of the zoning arrangement. But Ephraim Inyang will not hear of this, typical of a lawless behavior.

“Mkpat Enin people wonder what Mr. Inyang-eyen would be remembered for, when he adamantly said that some major roads in Mkpat Enin have no economic value and refused to push for their construction in the area during his tenure as commissioner for works.

“No indigene of Mkpat Enin can point to any meaningful empowerment from him.

“Mkpat Enin local government area has a mature political culture and knows how to appreciate leaders unlike Ephraim Inyang-eyen whose lifestyle is characterized by a sense of ingratitude exemplified in his rudeness and insult which he has constantly meted out to the State Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, a man who gave him a life-turning podium to climb and stand on. And we ask, like others, why is Ephraim Inyang telling lies and trying to incite the public against Governor Udom Emmanuel, who helped him? Is this not the same way Ephraim Inyang wants to payback Akwa Ibom South people, given the fact that an ingrate has no conscience and can easily bite the finger that fed him?

“It obviously appears that Ephraim Inyang had to sponsor some dregs from Mkpat Enin to claim to endorse him as a response to the credible endorsements which Dr. Ekong Sampson has received from the high and mighty in Inyangeyen's Onna Local Government Area. The Onna leaders who have openly backed Dr. Ekong Sampson for senate include our dear Governor himself, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel and the Paramount Ruler of Onna, HRM Edidem Raymond Timothy Inyang, who said emphatically last month, that Ekong Sampson is the Senator that he wants for Eket Senatorial District.

“Also, notable Onna born past and present lawmakers who know how experience and character can enhance legislative capacity are going around Onna and Eket Senatorial District drumming support for Ekong Sampson. These include Rt Hon. Pat Ifon, the incumbent House of Reps Member for Eket Federal Constituency, Rt Hon. Nse Essien, the current House of Assembly Member for Onna, Hon. Owodighe Ekpoattai, former House of Reps Member, Otuekong (Barr.) Ini Ikott, former House of Assembly Member and many others.

“Even in Ephraim Inyangeyen's very Oniong Community, the likes of Hon. Godwin Oton, former Member representing Onna State Constituency, Obong l Godwin Ben a.k.a Black and Nelson Ntia are all backing Ekong Sampson for Senate. This is in addition to the most prominent and influential elders, women and youth segments, including the traditional institution in Oniong and Onna Local Government Area, who are supporting Ekong Sampson for Senate and other PDP Candidates.

“Akparawa Ephraim Inyang may also do well, on the other hand to point to one credible and influential Mkpat Enin person(even if such a person is in Lagos), who is supporting him to take Mkpat Enin's turn and run for the Senate.

“Ephraim Inyangeyen may also wish to tell the world what he has ever done for Ekong Sampson's Ikpa Ikono Clan, (where Barr. Ekong Sampson established probably the best community secondary school in the State, provided massive electrification, remodeled and rebuilt the clan centre with his personal funds, gave countless employments, etc), and for Mkpat Enin Local Government Area generally, to warrant him struggling the senate seat with Mkpat Enin.

“Recall that as far back as early this year, the Paramount Ruler of Mkpat Enin, HRM Edidem Akpan Akpan Ekpene and the entire strata of the traditional institution in Mkpat Enin had endorsed Ekong Sampson for Senate. The current Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga followed suit and presented Dr. Ekong Sampson as the choice of Mkpat Enin for Senate. Today, all the leading influential groups in Mkpat Enin are supporting Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin, Ekong Sampson for Senate.

“The entire youth strata even gave him the unique Lifetime Achievement Award because of his contribution to our Local Government Area and are mobilizing Mkpat Enin youths and even those outside our Local Government to send Ekong Sampson to the senate. Mkpat Enin appreciates Dr. Ekong Sampson who lived among his people throughout his two stints as our Local Government Chairman and has something to show in all the wards and clans of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

“People who are supporting Dr. Ekong Sampson and Mkpat Enin are people with conscience and respect for law and order.

“They respect the benefits of zoning. They also appreciate that Ekong Sampson worked in the Senate before he became Local Government Chairman, House of Assembly Member and Commissioner. These people respect Mkpat Enin as a Local Government Area. They respect zoning, experience, capacity and character which favour Ekong Sampson for Senate.

“No amount of blackmail, sponsored twisted propaganda, attempts to divert and curry public sympathy and sheer lawlessness, can make Ephraim Inyang usurp the turn of Mkpat Enin for Senate.

For purpose of emphasis, Mkpat Enin stands like the rock of Gibraltar behind Gov. Udom Emmanuel and will support him to the end of his administration and to produce his successor, Pastor Umo Eno, who is proudly married to a great daughter of Mkpat Enin, Pastor (Mrs) Patience Umo Eno”, the statement added.

AKWA IBOM AWAY FROM OIL My father once told me that in their days, employers used to come scout for brilliant graduates from tertiary institutions and so, having credentials was the passport to a better life. Fast forward to today - skills have taken the lead as the new passport to better life. Employers today want skills above several other considerations. So then, what do we do? Acquire skills. What this means is, without skills, we cannot achieve much as individuals and as a collective or remain relevant in the 21st century skill economy, but what if we are willing yet unable to afford the acquisition of skills? Enter The New Breed (TNB) - an NGO with great interest in human capital development, electing to train for free a targeted minimum of 10,000 Akwa Ibomites on various sellable entrepreneurial skills, with 300 beneficiaries already billed for graduation in the first batch. This move is geared towards growing a productive population and churning out individuals ready, capable and available for the 21st century labour market, as well as achieving a full entrepreneurial state with ripple effects on the state's economy.
