The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have just announced that they are launching a formal review into the Will Smith and Chris Rock slapping incident during the Oscars Sunday evening.

In a statement issued on Monday, a spokesperson for the film academy told Variety: "The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."

U.S APPLIES NEW SANCTIONS ON BELARUSIAN PRESIDENT

🇧🇾 Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has allied with Russia in its war in Ukraine got a package of new sanctions today from the United States.

A number of other Russians, including a Russian judge, were also targeted with sanctions for human rights abuses, according to the US Treasury Department.

The sanctions were applied to Lukashenko as well as his wife, Halina. They would block their property and interests in the United States and prohibit Americans from engaging in transactions with them.

Mr Lukashenko, who has been dubbed “Europe’s last dictator”, has ruled the former Soviet state with an iron fist since 1994.

UKRAINE: AMERICAN JOURNALIST KILLED BY RUSSIAN FORCES

According to Ukrainian authorities, Russian forces killed one American journalist and injured another in the town of Irpin, outside of Kyiv, on Sunday.

According to Andriy Nebytov, the chief of Kyiv's regional police force, Brent Renaud, a 50-year-old filmmaker, was killed when Russian troops opened fire. On Facebook, Nebytov shared a graphic photo of Renaud's body, as well as photos of his American passport and media credentials from The New York Times.

A spokeswoman for the Times said Renaud was "a talented filmmaker who had contributed to The New York Times over the years," most recently in 2015, but he "was not on assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine."

Reacting to the news, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan called reports of Renaud's death "shocking and horrifying," telling "Face the Nation" on Sunday that the U.S. and its allies would impose "appropriate consequences" against Russia for the killing.

"I will just say that this is part and parcel of what has been a brazen aggression on the part of the Russians where they have targeted civilians, they have targeted hospitals, they have targeted places of worship and they have targeted journalists," Sullivan said.

Schools in Japan have banned female students from wearing their hair in ponytails because the exposed nape of the neck "sexually excites men".

The law is just one of a long list of severe dress code policies that pupils must adhere to in the country's institutions.

A former school teacher - Motoki Sugiyama told Vice that ponytail regulation is comparable to the one that prohibits female pupils from wearing non-white undergarments.

"They’re worried boys will look at girls, which is similar to the reasoning behind upholding a white-only underwear colour rule,” he said.

"I've always criticized these restrictions, but students have no choice but to accept them because there is so little criticism and they've grown so normalized." - he mentioned.

The gendered norms have also infuriated parents and pupils. Some schools are beginning to drop them as a result of the criticism.

Japanese billionaire Hiroshi "Mickey" Mikitani said on Sunday (Feb 27) he will donate one billion yen (S$11.7 million) to the government of Ukraine, calling Russia's invasion "a challenge to democracy".

The founder of e-commerce giant Rakuten said in a letter addressed to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky that the donation of one billion yen will go towards "humanitarian activities to help people in Ukraine who are victims of the violence".

Mr Mikitani said he visited Kyiv in 2019 and met Mr Zelensky.

"My thoughts are with you and Ukraine people," Mr Mikitani said in his letter.

"I believe that the trampling of a peaceful and democratic Ukraine by unjustified force is a challenge to democracy.

"I sincerely hope that Russia and Ukraine can resolve this issue peacefully and that Ukraine people can have peace again as soon as possible," he wrote.

Russia's invasion has prompted broad financial sanctions from major democracies while individuals and organisations across the world have solicited donations to help Ukraine.

The Japanese government has also announced sanctions on Moscow, including freezing assets and banning key exports such as semiconductors to organisations related to the Russian military

Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich has handed over the affairs of the club to trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation.

“During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities,” Mr Abramovich said in a statement on Saturday.

“I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”

Heroes of Ukraine

Ukrainian soldier, Vitaly Skakun is hailed as a hero after sacrificing his life to blow up the Henichesky Bridge.

Vitaly Skakun sacrificed his life to blow up the Henichesky Bridge near Kyiv, in an attempt to block the passage of Russian soldiers.

Faced with a column of Russian tanks advancing towards the bridge, a decision was made to destroy it using mines.

However, Skakun didn't have enough time to leave the area and detonate the mines remotely, so he contacted his battalion to let them know that he would do it from where he was.

Shortly afterwards, an explosion was heard - successfully destroying the bridge but also killing Skakun.

A social media post from the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said: "His heroic deed significantly slowed the advance of the enemy, which allowed the unit to redeploy and organise the defence" and that he would be nominated for a national award.

Vitaly Skakun is hailed as a hero after sacrificing his life to blow up the Henichesky Bridge.

Russia-Ukraine crisis: Ukrainean President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s address in full:

Today I initiated a phone call with the president of the Russian Federation. The result was silence. Though the silence should be in Donbas. That’s why I want to address today the people of Russia. I am addressing you not as a president, I am addressing you as a citizen of Ukraine.

More than 2,000km of the common border is dividing us. Along this border your troops are stationed, almost 200,000 soldiers, thousands of military vehicles. Your leaders approved them to make a step forward, to the territory of another country. And this step can be the beginning of a big war on the European continent.

We know for sure that we don’t need the war. Not a Cold War, not a hot war. Not a hybrid one. But if we’ll be attacked by the [enemy] troops, if they try to take our country away from us, our freedom, our lives, the lives of our children, we will defend ourselves. Not attack, but defend ourselves. And when you will be attacking us, you will see our faces, not our backs, but our faces.

The war is a big disaster, and this disaster has a high price. With every meaning of this word. People lose money, reputation, quality of life, they lose freedom. But the main thing is that people lose their loved ones, they lose themselves.

They told you that Ukraine is posing a threat to Russia. It was not the case in the past, not in the present, it’s not going to be in the future. You are demanding security guarantees from NATO, but we also demand security guarantees. Security for Ukraine from you, from Russia and other guarantees of the Budapest memorandum.

But our main goal is peace in Ukraine and the safety of our people, Ukrainians. For that, we are ready to have talks with anybody, including you, in any format, on any platform. The war will deprive [security] guarantees from everybody – nobody will have guarantees of security any more. Who will suffer the most from it? The people. Who doesn’t want it the most? The people! Who can stop it? The people. But are there those people among you? I am sure.

I know that they [the Russian state] won’t show my address on Russian TV, but Russian people have to see it. They need to know the truth, and the truth is that it is time to stop now, before it is too late. And if the Russian leaders don’t want to sit with us behind the table for the sake of peace, maybe they will sit behind the table with you. Do Russians want the war? I would like to know the answer. But the answer depends only on you, citizens of the Russian Federation.
