Anambra School Defeats UK Schools, Others to Emerge Champions of Inaugural UK-Nigeria Competition.

In what can only be described as a landmark moment for Nigerian secondary school education, St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, has emerged grand champion of the inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, triumphing over both local and British contenders in an intellectually charged contest that captivated audiences across two nations.

The groundbreaking competition, jointly organized by Bring It On Africa and Debate Mate UK, was designed to foster cross-cultural dialogue and sharpen the critical thinking, oratory, and reasoning skills of students from both countries. Held virtually on June 19, 2025, the event saw spirited participation from top-ranking schools on both sides of the Atlantic.

Representing Nigeria were four elite institutions: Britarch Schools, Abuja; Sure Start School, Abuja; St. Augustine’s College, Jos; and St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu. Flying the flag for the United Kingdom were distinguished schools such as Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.

After intense preliminary rounds that tested their logical acuity, public speaking finesse, and rebuttal prowess, St. John Vianney Science College broke straight to the finals. The team confidently out-argued the British contenders—defeating Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School—before advancing to an all-Nigerian final against St. Augustine’s College, Jos.

In a highly competitive showdown that held viewers in suspense, St. John Vianney Science College secured a decisive victory in the finals, earning the prestigious title of Inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Champions. With this triumph came the honour of representing Nigeria at the extensional debate rounds scheduled for December 2025 in London, United Kingdom.

The school was represented by Chibueze Jennifer, Obiokafor Catherine, Eneoli Benjamin, and Onwuegbusi Valentine, mentored by their coach, John Onuigbo, with valuable support from Chiagozie Udorji. Speaking shortly after the victory, Chibueze Jennifer, one of the standout performers, expressed her excitement and gratitude: “This is a dream come true for all of us. The level of competition was extremely high, especially going against top schools from the UK. But we believed in our preparation, trusted each other, and gave it our best. Winning this title has shown us that Nigerian students can stand toe-to-toe with anyone in the world when given the platform.”

The mood of celebration was equally palpable among the school leadership. Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, popularly known as Fr. Ebube Muonso and Director of St. John Vianney Science College, hailed the team’s triumph as proof of the school’s enduring commitment to excellence, discipline, and global relevance. “This victory is a validation of the quality of education and moral formation that St. John Vianney Science College stands for,” Rev. Fr. Obimma remarked. “Our students have demonstrated not only academic brilliance but also the courage to engage in global discourse. We are proud of their achievement and trust that this marks the beginning of many more global successes for them and for Nigeria.”

The UK-Nigeria Debate Championship, the first of its kind, provided a rare virtual platform for students from both countries to explore pressing global themes, challenge assumptions, and develop meaningful cross-cultural understanding. Debate topics ranged from technology and environmental protection to history.

The performance of the Nigerian schools was exceptional. St. Augustine’s College, Jos, also secured a coveted place in the upcoming London rounds, having earned the runner-up position in the fiercely contested final against St. John Vianney Science College. Shireland High School from the United Kingdom placed third overall.

As the dust settles on this historic virtual competition, excitement is already building for the next stage. Both St. John Vianney Science College, Anambra State, and St. Augustine’s College, Jos, will once again represent Nigeria in the extensional Grand Finale slated for December in London, where they will engage their British peers in live, face-to-face debates on a global stage.

How We Brought Telemedicine to 326 Rural Health Centers in Anambra — 24Telemed Co-founder.

Dr. Mariette Obianozie-Amadi, a distinguished physician has shed light on how they developed and successfully deployed telemedicine services across 326 primary healthcare centers in all 21 local government areas of Anambra State,a groundbreaking medical revolution and transformative healthcare initiative that is silently transforming access to quality healthcare in rural communities and quietly reshaping the rural medical landscape in Nigeria at large.

In an exclusive interview with this reporter, Dr. Obianozie-Amadi, who holds a PhD and MBA in Healthcare Management, narrated a deeply personal and inspiring story behind her passion for rural medicine, and why she chose to pursue a cause many others considered either too complex or unsustainable. This deeply personal backstory, she said, inspired her journey into medicine and eventually birthed 24Telemed.
According to her, the journey did not just begin in a hospital or boardroom, but began with a family tragedy. She stated that the death of her mother was a pivotal moment in her life.

Although she went on to become a trained medical doctor with diverse experience in clinical practice and healthcare management, she said that the COVID-19 pandemic further ignited her decision to tackle one of Nigeria’s most glaring healthcare challenges, which is access to quality healthcare in rural communities.

This realization, combined with her growing interest in telemedicine, gave birth to 24Telemed,a social enterprise focused on deploying and managing telemedicine programs to bridge medical gap in hard-to-reach rural communities.

Unlike urban-focused models, 24Telemed directs its skills toward communities that are often off the grid both figuratively and literally.

In September 2022, in partnership with the Anambra state ministry of Health, a centralized tele hub was launched by his excellency Governor Soludo which marked the beginning of 24Telemed foot print in the state. By January 2025 Anambra state telemedicine service was deployed in 326 primary healthcare centers across the state, ensuring that each local government area was covered.

She further stated that the deployment wasn’t simply about installing devices or apps, but far beyond that, as it involved setting up full-scale, well-tailored, context-specific, and community-friendly telemedicine services that enable rural dwellers and patients in hard-to-reach areas to consult specialist doctors and access specialist medical services remotely via local health workers, without having to travel miles away to the urban cities or spend money they don’t have.
When asked how her team overcame obstacles associated with rural health innovation in Nigeria, such as poor infrastructure, lack of digital literacy, and resistance from local staff, Dr. Obianozie-Amadi mentioned that “ resilience, tenacity, strategy, stakeholder engagement, and adaptability.”

She also acknowledged the active support of the Anambra State Ministry of Health, especially during the implementation and deployment phase, and thanked the ministry of health in making the project a success.
Looking ahead, she revealed that 24Telemed’s vision is to expand to other rural areas in Nigeria and ensuring that a child in any rural area can connect with a doctor just like a child in Victoria Island.

Dr. Obianozie-Amadi passionately called for more investment in rural telemedicine, especially from development partners, philanthropists, and governments.
“Telemedicine is a necessity, especially in hard-to-reach rural communities where people have no other medical option. If we really want to solve the medical access crisis, we have to scale innovations like this.
With telemedicine service now operational in every part of Anambra State, the narrative of healthcare access in rural communities is gradually shifting from despair to hope, from distance to connection, and from avoidable deaths to affordable care, bringing quality healthcare to the doorstep of the rural population.

JAMB: Again, Mmesoma Breaks UTME Record In Anambra

Another Nmemsoma, but now Obiora-Nwokedi Nmesoma, a student of Queens Convent Awka in Anambra State, has set a new academic record in her school by scoring 343 in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) resit.

The Anglican Church-owned institution celebrated the exceptional achievement, especially after Nmesoma’s earlier score of 165 in the controversial initial exam, which the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) blamed on technical glitches.

The initial incident left many students distraught, with reports of psychological distress and even a tragic su***de. However, Nmesoma refused to be defined by the flawed system. Encouraged by her teachers and school community, she sat for the rescheduled exam and delivered an extraordinary performance.

Speaking with our correspondent, the school's principal, Dr. Martha Ibezim, credited the feat to the school’s commitment to academic excellence, holistic development, and a rigorous learning environment. She praised the dedication of the faculty and the school’s investment in quality education.

“Nmesoma’s resilience and brilliance have not only secured her a promising future but have also brought immense pride to Queens Convent,” Dr. Ibezim stated. “Her story is a powerful reminder of perseverance and the importance of support systems in education.”

"Nmesoma is a star pupil. Her determination, combined with the support she received from our faculty, helped her overcome a disheartening setback,” Ibezim stated.

Nmesoma’s achievement stands as a beacon of hope and determination, showing how students can overcome setbacks and thrive when given a second chance and the right environment. Her success reinforces Queens Convent Awka’s standing as a hub for academic and personal excellence.

How We Built Anambra's Fastest Growing Restaurant, Opened 12 Outlets in 13 Years - Mrs Abayol

A Benue couple, Hon. Peter Abayol and Pastor Mrs. Ifeoma Abayol, has opened up on their entrepreneurial journey, detailing how their fast food venture — Chillis Foods —survived the odds and blossomed across Nigeria, with Anambra State proving to be their most receptive and fertile ground for growth.

In what can best be described as a journey fueled by passion and sustained by grace, the couple recounted how they have continued to leave a delectable imprint on the food and hospitality industry through their thriving culinary enterprise

In an exclusive interview, Pastor Mrs. Ifeoma Abayol, who hails from Enugu State by birth but is married to Hon. Peter Abayol from Benue State, narrated how her deep love for good food and the desire to serve quality meals in a serene environment spurred the idea of venturing into the fast food industry over a decade ago.

According to her, she often found herself disappointed by the quality of food served at most restaurants, which rarely met her taste standard. This recurring dissatisfaction, she recalled, rather than dissuade her, ignited a vision in her, gradually inspired and stirred up a desire in her to start something different — a food business that would replicate the delicious and satisfying taste of homemade meals.

Though the ambition was clear and the vision compelling, translating these into reality came with enormous challenges. Faced with the daunting task of executing what she described as a “gigantic project”, they had no financial muscle to start, while several banks turned down their requests for funding, insisting they lacked the necessary structural framework. Undeterred by rejection, however, she leaned on faith, resilience, and passion to stay the course.

“That made us go back to our savings, borrowed money from close friends and sold one or two properties that we acquired back then to start the business. So it was a very tough beginning but thank God for where we are today,” she recounted.

She revealed that the venture officially kicked off on May 19, 2012 with just one outlet, while two years later, they opened a second branch, and by 2021, Chillis experienced an explosive expansion, launching three additional branches in a year. That, according to her, marked a significant milestone in the journey, as it reinforced the brand’s growth and its acceptance by the public. As at May 2025, thirteen years after kick off, Pastor Abayol, said Chillis Foods has already built twelve branches across various states in the southeastern region and beyond.

Speaking on some of the major challenges she has encountered, she pointed to staff management as a persistent issue. She explained that the fast food sector typically witnesses high staff turnover, which they have not been exempted from. However, she further noted that as the business grew, it became easier to manage such transitions, since replacements could be made more seamlessly without disrupting operations.

In her words, what has sustained the business is not just consistency in operations but also consistency in taste. Many customers, she said, commend Chillis Foods for its home-like nature, which she considers one of their strongest selling points.

Interestingly, while many businesses struggled or shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pastor Abayol said Chillis Foods witnessed what she described as an “uncommon breakthrough.” According to her, with limited dining options available due to lockdowns then, many customers turned to Chillis for their food needs. That period, she observed, was both surprising and rewarding for the brand.

Pastor Abayol also shared insight about their expansion into Anambra State, which she said has been remarkably positive. She said from the construction phase to full operations, the people of Anambra showed strong support and warmth reception, which, she noted, contributed to the smooth establishment and growth of the business in the state.

“When it comes to warm reception, I’d say Ndi Anambra has done well… So, I give it to Anambrarians anywhere, anytime because they are so good to Chillis and they are the reason why we are here, and if you notice, majority of our branches are situated here,” she stated.

She further revealed that they source all their food items locally within the state, which not only reduces cost but also supports the local economy and farmers.

Recounting some of their impacts, Pastor Abayol proudly shared that the business currently has over 400 staff members on its payroll, which she described as one of her greatest joys, knowing that hundreds of homes are being sustained through her dream.

Her words: “We have over 400 people working with us and these are men and women with families. So being able to put food on their table is a thing of joy. Seeing that through you, they are able to earn a living is a thing of joy and that’s what we intend to achieve and by the grace of God, we are doing that.” These, she added, motivate her to keep going, even in the face of heavy losses and tough days.

Speaking further, she noted that one of the recurring operational challenges is the loss of perishable goods due to poor handling or mistakes by staff. At times, she lamented, such losses run into millions of naira. Nonetheless, she pointed out that festive periods such as Christmas bring in increased patronage, which helps the business recover from such setbacks and end the year on a high note.

Narrating how the business started , She said, “My husband was working in a bank and when we got married, he asked me what I wanted to do and I have always had the passion for cooking so I told him that I wanted to go into fast food business.

“Being a young man who loves his wife, he wasn’t really comfortable with my decision as he wanted me to work in a bank or other corporate organizations.

“It wasn’t in a bad light he objected for my going into the food industry, he just wanted more for me but I told him that it is what I really wanted, and I wasn’t really thinking about the money then; but with the way I was going about it, my husband decided to support me since I wasn’t talking about anything else aside fast food business. The truth is that we actually started it together.”

She emphasized the importance of growth, both personally and professionally, noting that she constantly enrolls in trainings and educational sessions, because, in her view, “once you stop learning, you start dying.” She also noted that branding has played a major role in building the business, pointing out that they invested in radio advertisements and other platforms from the early days to make Chillis a visible and relatable brand.

Beyond food, she explained that Chillis Foods now also provides event halls for weddings, conferences, and other social gatherings — a move aimed at diversifying their services and creating an all-in-one experience for customers.

She added that balancing her many roles as a wife, mother, businesswoman, and pastor has not been an easy ride. However, she believes that divine backing has been her greatest strength.

“When God gives you a vision, He also gives you the wisdom to pursue it,” she stated, revealing that the vision itself instills discipline, structure, and a sense of responsibility that enables one to manage multiple responsibilities effectively.

To young women and others aspiring to start their own businesses, the Chillis Foods Co-founder encouraged them not to let anything, especially fear or lack of capital, kill their vision, but to start in any little way they can, no matter how big or distant the dream may seems.

She also stated that she draws encouragement from other women in business, especially those who work harmoniously with their husbands. That kind of partnership, she said, gives her hope and reflects the beauty of mutual support in marriage and entrepreneurship.

When asked what defines a real woman in her view, Pastor Abayol said any woman who achieves success without sacrificing the peace and unity of her home is a real woman, emphasizing that women must learn to find balance between career and family, because both are essential to a fulfilling life.

On a lighter note, she revealed that contrary to what many might assume, she is not all about work, but also a lover of good music and and good dancer too.

Ultimately, Pastor Abayol attributed everything she has achieved to the grace of God. She was quick to emphasize that divine help has been her anchor through it all. While others may downplay the role of spirituality in business, she remains unapologetically convinced that God’s hand has been her greatest asset.
