EID-EL-MAULUD : GOV. BELLO FELICITATES WITH MUSLIMS, CHARGES THEM TO EMBRACE PEACE, PRAY FOR NIGERIA

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has felicitated with Muslims in the state and across the world over this year’s Eid-El-Maulud celebration, urging them to embrace a life of peace and eschew all forms of violence.

The Governor also called for intensified prayers and sober reflections on the challenges confronting the nation, noting that through our collective prayers for country and its leaders the efforts at sustaining peace, unity and progress would be fully actualized.

The Governor gave this charge on Thursday in a press statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Onogwu Muhammed in commemorating this years’ occasion of Eid-El-Maulud celebration.

He stated that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in his lifetime preached peace and also lived peacefully without respite to any individual or religion, noting that true followers of his teaching should imbibe such act.

Governor Bello also asked that youths across the state and nation to remain committed to the lofty dreams of one Nigeria as they remained peaceful and orderly in their conducts, affirming that these were principles that could guarantee progress and development in the country.

The Governor similarly expressed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and properties of its citizens and a continued promise to frontier more developmental strides that would be beneficial to all and sundry.

: KOGI GOV URGES YOUTHS TO END PROTESTS, DIALOGUE WITH GOVT
.....ADVISES YOUTHS IN KOGI AGAINST BLOCKING ROADS

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has again called on Nigerian youths protesting against police brutality across the country to end the ongoing protests and enter a roundtable dialogue with government in addressing their various demands.

Bello made the call on Monday in his address to Nigerian youths which is the 5th in the series of his addresses to the youths since the commencement of their protests about 10 days ago.

He said the protesting youths have over the last 10 days demonstrated resilience and courage in making their demands known to the government, adding that was time leaders of the protesters come out to engage with the government.

According to him, it would be difficult for the governments at all levels to know who to interface with in resolving some of the issues if there are no leaders, adding that opportunists could hijack the gains of the protests.

"In like manner, the real leaders and spokespersons of these protests must also begin to 'show face' now to enable government at all levels know who to interface with.

"We cannot even appoint people into the various bodies being set up to address your demands without being afraid that opportunists who have no credibility with you are high-jacking it.

"May I therefore request that the protesters give us people to engage with, especially on the timeliest schedules for calling it a day which accommodates all reasonable demands", he said.

The governor warned that notwithstanding the discontent and grievances being expressed by Nigerians, they must resist the temptation of using the current situation to seek an undemocratic change in leadership.

"It goes without saying that despite different levels of dissatisfaction with the status quo in our country among the citizenry, it is unwise to think that a change of leadership other than by clear-cut democratic means will be tolerated by citizens.

"Those interested in Mr. President's seat must wait for 2023 and when it is finally up for grabs, they must present themselves to the Nigerian electorate, duly nominated as flagbearers for any party of their choice. It is as simple as that. Ditto for any other duly elected seat or office", he said.

Bello said there have been calls on youths in Kogi State to engage in more protests, adding that while he's not against peaceful protests in the state, he however advised youths against blocking major highways which could cause hardships to the citizens.

"As we go into a new week, I have seen several advertisements calling for more protests in Kogi State. As usual, I am all for peaceful protests, but I do caution that all gatherings must maintain empathy for others who may not wish to march with you at this time.

"In particular, given our unique position as the gateway to the North and South of the country, I must demand respect for the right of road users. People cannot be emerging from months of lockdown, be in the process of trying to rebuild their lives only to be thrown back into extended lockdowns again by barricades set up by protesters on public thoroughfares.

"We are making these cautionary statements at this time as a responsible government which is keyed into, and even quite ahead of, the national response to your demands.

"We will not relent in putting in early warning systems for detecting, and sustainable safeguards for checkmating, abuses against the human rights of citizens, especially the youths, by law enforcement agencies.

"At the same time, we are committed to making the work easier for our police by providing them with training in modern policing, professional therapy/counselling and supply of kits at no cost. Making Nigeria great is a task which belongs to all of us", he said.

KOGI GOVERNOR REACTS TO PEACEFUL PROTEST AGAINST FSARS BRUTALITY

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello on Saturday expressed support for peaceful protests against the brutality by some personnel of the FSARS against citizens, especially youths.

Bello, in his message to Nigerian youths on the protests, described seeking an end to the brutal conduct against citizens by FSARS, other police units and the personnel of all security agencies as a worthy cause that must be supported by all.

He, however, implored the youth against violent confrontations with the police under any form or guise, whether during these protests or in any other circumstance.

"Taking the law into your hands is unwise, dangerous to the perpetrators and counter-productive to all desired outcomes. We will continue to work toward a new direction in the affairs of Nigeria in which all citizens can maximise the benefits of nationhood, including freedom from arbitrariness by agents of government," he said.

He said as the governor and Chief Security Officer of Kogi State, he had had cause in the past to order the arrest and prosecution of security officers whose misconduct and brutality led to injury and/or death of innocent citizens in the state.

"This is because I believe in the synergy between law and order and due process as safeguards for the absolute rights of citizens to decent treatment at all stages of encounter with law enforcement.

"On the flip side, I have also worked to improve general welfare for all security personnel and formations operating in Kogi State - in cash and in kind, rewarded outstanding service by officers and stoutly defended those falsely accused or unfairly victimised. This is because I believe there is a link between an officer's job satisfaction and the value he or she has for the job. This, in turn, determines how a security personnel reacts to citizens while carrying out official duties.

"We also work as actively as possible to foster mutual respect between law enforcement and our citizens in every policing situation bearing in mind that cooperation always works better than conflict," he said.

Bello noted that a small percentage of security officers persist in unprofessional conduct which has tainted the image of the police and government when citizens rate them as corrupt on the basis of unsavoury experiences on our roads and elsewhere cannot be denied.

"While I cannot immediately recall any incident of it, I wish to apologise as a leader for any error of omission or commission under my watch which has led to unlawful experiences in police custody by any citizen."

He said in solidarity with this cause, I would engage with some of his colleagues, the police hierarchy and the leadership of the Nigerian Human Rights Commission on how to further facilitate progress on the order by President Muhammadu Buhari, since July 2019, for implementation of the Report of the Presidential Panel on the Reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

Governor Bello said his administration had just established the Office of the Public Defender and Citizens’ Rights Commission (PDCRC).

He directed the immediate setting up of a Human Rights Special Intervention Group (HRSIG) under the PDCRC to receive and rapidly resolve complaints of brutality by law enforcement (illegal arrest, detention, among others) against any citizen in Kogi State and any Kogite anywhere in Nigeria.
