Before 2018, BET Awards used to present awards to African artistes backstage, or in front of an empty audience, hours before the main show starts.

Wizkid compelled BET to stop that disrespect of African artistes. In 2017, Wiz won BET Best International Act but refused to show up for the event, & even called them out, & blasted them in an interview saying: "This is why I don't go to the shows mehn".

In the following year when Davido won, the award was presented to him at the main stage in front of real audience. Ever since then, African artistes have been receiving same treatment as their American counterparts at the BET Awards.

"There are a lot of African artist that are doing a there genres like R&B. Artist like Johnny Drille, Chike, and many others do pure R&B and not afrobeats. But then over here, they just generalize every African artist under afrobeats. I think they just use afrobeats to describe us African musicians, I don't think it's the style of music we make. If you look at a rapper like Odumodublvck right now, he's doing straight Drill Hip Hop but because he's African, he's recognized outside Africa as an afrobeats artîst. Afrobeats is the sound which was created by Fela Kuti years ago but the UK was the first country to welcome African music and they just described African music as afrobeats. Afrobeats is just a term used to describe every African artist right now. Whether you do trap, hip hop, R&B, Tenor saxophone r whatever but as long as it's from an African artist, it'll be classified as afrobeats." Davido

There are a whole lot of genres in Africa but since the Western world doesn't know, they just classify everything under afrobeats.

Tyla does amapiano but because she's African, she's recognized under afrobeats. Odumodublvck is a rapper but because he's African, he's recognized under afrobeats.
