Dear Governor Nasir el-Rufai, Zaria is on the Brink

Dear sir, Zaria is on the brink. The kidnappers seem to have found gold deposits in Zaria. They seem to have set an invincible circle around Zaria from where they move in and out to carry out their deadly raids with little or no kinetic resistance from our coercive apparatuses. They kidnap Zaria men, women, and children, some of whom are never even reported.

Sir, do you know that farmlands after Shika gari have since become no man’s land? Do you know that places like Saye and environs are fast becoming ghost cities?

Do you know that many people, particularly cattle rearers have since emigrated from such abandoned places and are settling in new areas like Kabama, Hayin Bagadaza, etc with consequent hardships?

Do you know that such kidnappers now easily get access to our campuses and poach on staff in staff quarters? Do you know that such kidnapped victims regain freedom only after selling their houses, lands, and cars?

Imagine someone who’s worked for 20 years being made to sell all that he has to regain the freedom of his loved ones and go back to square zero after a decimal point.

Sir, do you know that it is the victims of such siege that your tax agency has gathered men and guns, including DSS in order to force them to pay “taxes?”

Do you know that to date your government hasn’t come out to communicate with Zaria people to reassure them of your commitment to safeguarding our lives?

Instead, what we have is an open threat in both English and Hausa about how your government has amassed its arsenals, not to fight the kidnappers but to fight victims of kidnapping into paying “taxes?”

Sir, governance as you know, isn’t only about revenue generation. You can only generate revenue where there is peaceful coexistence and smooth economic activities.

So, how do we pay taxes when the little we have is being threatened by bandits marauding as kidnappers. How do we pay taxes when we are lost as to whom to fall back to when the kidnappers strike?

In as much as it is alright for the government to demand for taxes to be paid, it is also pertinent for the Same government to safeguard the lives of the taxpayers.

It is inappropriately tyrannical to allow us to be victims of kidnappers and at the same time to organize men and machinery, not to fight the kidnappers but to force people suffering to pay taxes.

In governance, communication, particularly communicating with people says a lot about our leaders. Yes, in terms of security issues, not everything should be in the open.

However, showing strong feelings to people that have suffered from the inactions of government goes a long way in soothing their pains.

You cannot keep quiet while people are under siege by kidnappers and then just wake up to tell them you’re coming with arms to force them into paying taxes. Actions should be seen in stopping kidnapping and collecting taxes.

Thank you, sir.

Yours sincerely,
Muhammad Hashim Suleiman, Department of Mass Communication, ABU Zaria.

*PRESS STATEMENT*

*HEED ADVISES OF EXPERTS ON COVID-19 TO CURB SPREAD*

It has become pertinent on the Islamic movement in Nigeria under the revered leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky (H) to call on the public and humanity at large to compliment the efforts of health experts and comply with instructions and guidance to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus now taking a toll in our immediate environment Nigeria.

With deep sense of concern, we wish to express our dismay over the carelessness of the Nigerian authorities that led to the spread of the pandemic to Nigeria from the onset, due to its indifference, disregard to the life and wellbeing of the citizenry and its inability to be proactive.

Nigerians should endeavor to domesticate all guiding instructions that will stall the spread of the pandemic that include the washing of hands with soap, using protective wears like facemasks and hand gloves as well as staying away from gatherings. They should also always maintain a social distance of at least one meter whenever they must interact with others and avoid touching of their faces, noses and eyes because the pandemic is real and not a hoax as wrongly perceived by some.

It is only through these that one can stay safe under a government that is less concerned about proper management of the situation. In as much as it is necessary for people to remain in self-isolation, it is also necessary for those who live from hand-to-mouth, that make over 50 percent of the population, to be given palliatives as it is the practice across the globe. You cant shut down poverty stricken and hungry people for good without any sustenance and expect proper results unless you are not truly committed to protection of their lives against the devastation. We will use this opportunity to call on the wealthy philanthropists to devise ways of assisting the poor to save lives as the government remains mute and indifferent.

The Islamic Movement has since embarked on giving public awareness on the need to comply with experts advises through media campaigns and distribution of soaps for the washing of hands to the needy communities and thousands of volunteers are readily available in terms of manpower in the fight against the pandemic.

We also use this medium to renew the call for the immediate and unconditional release of our leader Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky (H) and his wife who are currently detained at the highly overcrowded Kaduna Prison, without access to proper medical care, especially considering that the Kaduna Sate Government has proved incapable of protecting even its highest-ranking officials. We call on the public to stay safe and abide by experts instructions.
