THE HUMAN TRAFFICKING WOLVES

Chapter 1

Voting another political party is not an option. Vote UDP or leave this centre. Tears rolled down my cheeks while witnessing how innocent citizens were bullied by thugs from voting their preferred candidate.

I watched in shock at how ballot boxes were snatched, voters chased from their polling units and so much which I cannot even describe. I was overtaken by sudden weakness so I bade my friend Munachi good bye and made my way home.

On getting closer to my house, all I could hear was the thud from cracking of coconuts which I suppose or better still believe was our dinner tonight. I squeezed through the half open door which which was kept that way due to the broken hinges and I layed down on my weak bed. So, after all the fasting and prayers, the election was still rigged? What happens to me? My mother? What of my siblings? Oh Lord! Do I have chances of furthering my education? Is there hope for a better Country? All these thoughts were running through my mind.

I came out of my train of thoughts when my younger sister came to inform me that mama had called for dinner. Hmm, dinner? Since when did coconut become dinner I said aloud. That was when my eyes went to my sisters fragile smile and torn clothes. Will it be shocking if I tell you that my mum and I actually wear the same clothes and then pass them on to my younger sister? We breathe and live poverty. Tufiakwa!! When will this come to an end? Let's go, I said as I lifted Chika into my arms.

To my greatest surprise, I saw a plate of fufu and soup and the coconut from earlier-on our dining mat. In excitement I hurriedly put Chika down, washed my hands and began to eat. Deep down in my heart I knew the food will give me little nutrition as it was made from ugu leaves (pumpkin), very little palm oil, snails and a lot of water, but thank God this was the first time in a very long while that we had eaten such a good meal.

After dinner, I cleared the plates, washed them out and everyone was preparing to retire to bed, we heard a gentle knock on our door. Agh-agh! Who could be knocking by this time of the night? Hmm! Go and check my mum said to me. With curiosity, I peeped through the torn window net and caught a glimpse of a familiar figure. It was Uncle Dubem! Without a second thought, I opened the door and welcomed him in. He had been to our house a few times before so he knew how to squeeze himself in. Wetin you dey find here by this time eh! Dubem? My mom asked with a concerned tone. Can I at least get a seat before revealing what brought me here? We offered him a seat after which he started speaking. You know I want the best for your family and I can see the difficulties you face living in this bad condition. See, I don't want to beat around the bush. I have an offer to take Onyinye to Italy. All I need ma is your consent and I will process all her documents to go abroad. Eh! H-eh! My Onyi abroad. Jesus! Baba God has remembered me ooh! She began to dance and the excitement can be seen all over her face even from the dim light of the almost finished candle. It is okay you can take your time to decide whether or not you want her to go. If you agree, the journey will commence in three weeks time. I also want to help some other people so you can ask four other girls who might be interested. Let me know of your decision after Wednesday mid- week service. With that he left for his home.

As Children's advocate, we believe that every child has a right to education, good health and a happy childhood so while institutions, schools and churches organize various events, competitions & workshops for children to showcase their talents and creativity, Parents and teachers should cease the opportunity to reflect on the progress of children and identify areas where they need more support.

The essence of children's Day also lies in not differentiating between a girl & a boy child and finally, remember that today is not just a symbolic day, it should be a day to reflect on the importance of Children, their rights and working towards creating a society that is safe, supportive and nurturing for us to grow and thrive.
