Akwa Ibom, 6 other States discontinue Suit Against FG Challenging Declaration Of Tinubu As President-Elect

Seven states under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Taraba, and Sokoto – which filed a suit against the Federal Government at the Supreme Court challenging the declaration of All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president-elect, have discontinued the suit.

The Notice of Discontinuance which was signed by their lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, says “Take notice that the plaintiffs doth hereby wholly discontinue this suit against the defendant herein”.

In the earlier suit which had the Attorneys-General of the states as plaintiffs and the Attorney General of the Federation as a defendant, the seven states had asked the Supreme Court to intervene in the just concluded general elections as they claimed that the declaration of Tinubu did not follow the Electoral Act and INEC’s own laid down guidelines, particularly the uploading of results to the iREV through the Bimodal Accreditation System (BVAS).
They also expressed fear of a probable breakdown of public order and civil disobedience.

💥TINUBU'S SPEECH AT COLLECTION OF CERTIFICATE OF RETURN

As I hold this certificate, this moment is one of celebration and gladness for us.

The road has been long. Yet we walked it. The battle has been hard fought. Yet, we won it.

But more importantly, I realize that I am just a servant of a larger purpose. You see, this is more than a document confirming the positive outcome of an election.
This important document symbolises our collective democratic attainment and even loftier aspirations. It represents trust, the impending transfer of most sacred duty and trust from one person to another.

At its most sublime, can also symbolize that each of you has the ability to achieve what others believe is impossible to achieve.

I stand before you the president-elect. And yes, that is special. But, I am no different than anyone of you.

If I can do this. You can do better. You must do better.

Our destiny as a people and nation depends on our ability to shed the artificial restrictions of bias and prejudice so that we live fully unto our democratic creed that no one is innately superior or entitled to greater rights and opportunities than any other Nigeria.

Very soon, this nation shall witness a young person standing before you holding this great symbol of democracy and national leadership. We shall see a woman standing before you, holding this certificate as its owner. We shall experience someone from a tribe that were hitherto dismissed.

By dint of hard work, determination, and unyielding belief the young people listening to me right now shall soon be the leaders of our precious and exceptional democratic republic.

Thus, by taking this certificate, I assume a sacred duty I shall never ignore.

To you the people, especially the youths, I will work day and night. I will work to the utmost of my ability to make Nigeria better.

For this to be a victory at all, it cannot simply be a victory for one man or even one party. It must become a victory for all Nigerians who are committed to a greater society.

I know many did not vote for me. And you are disappointed that your candidate is not where I now stand.

I understand your hurt. To you, I extend the embrace and comfort of one family member.

This great project called Nigeria beckons to us all. It is bigger and more important than any partisan divide.

To my supporters, I ask you to continue to have faith in the mission that we have articulated.

To those who didn’t support me, I ask that you not allow the disappointment of this moment to keep you from realizing the historic national progress endeavour make by joining hands and hearts in a common endeavor to pull this nation through.

I am asking that you work with me. I may have won the presidential election but I need you. More importantly, Nigeria needs you.

My heart and my door are open to you.

I ask you to come in so that we may begin the task of rebuilding our national home together, day by day, brick by brick.

Where there is poverty. Let us create prosperity and jobs.

Where there is hunger. Let us feed the people, chasing hunger from their midst.

Where there is now scarcity, let us rediscover abundance.

Where there is brutality, may we replace it with brotherhood.

Why? violence stalks the land, may we establish peace?

Where others have erected temples to hatred and bias, may we construct permanent monuments to compassion and abiding affection.

History may record this day as one which I officially stood before you as president-elect.

However, I would like to dedicate this day and record it as the moment that we vowed to come together to make Nigeria stand and shine forth at the beloved and brave republic God intended it to be.

NATIONAL BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE CHALLENGES OF THE CURRENCY SWAP AND STATE OF THE NATION, ON 16th FEBRUARY, 2023

My Dear Compatriots,

I have found it necessary to address you today, on the state of the nation and to render account on the efforts of our administration to sustain and strengthen our economy, enhance the fight against corruption and sustain our gains in the fight against terrorism and insecurity which has, undoubtedly, been impacted by several internal and external factors.

2.Particularly, I am addressing you, as your democratically elected President, to identify with you and express my sympathy, over the difficulties being experienced as we continue the implementation of new monetary policies, aimed at boosting our economy and tightening of the loopholes associated with money laundering.

3.Let me re-assure Nigerians, that strengthening our economy, enhancing security and blockage of leakages associated with illicit financial flows remain top priority of our administration. And I shall remain committed to my oath of protecting and advancing the interest of Nigerians and the nation, at all times.

4.In the last quarter of 2022, I authorised the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to redesign the N200, N500, and N1000 Nigerian banknotes.

5.For a smooth transition, I similarly approved that the redesigned banknotes should circulate concurrently with the old bank notes, till 31 January 2023, before the old notes, cease to be legal tender.

6.In appreciation of the systemic and human difficulties encountered during implementation and in response to the appeal of all citizens, an extension of ten days was authorized till 10th February, 2023 for the completion of the process. All these activities are being carried out within the ambit of the Constitution, the relevant law under the CBN Act 2007 and in line with global best practices.

7.Fellow citizens, while I seek your understanding and patience during this transient phase of implementation, I feel obliged to avail you a few critical points underpinning the policy decision. These include:

a. The need to restore the statutory ability of the CBN to keep a firm control over money in circulation. In 2015 when this administration commenced its first term, Currency-in-Circulation was only N1.4trillion.
b. The proportion of currency outside banks grew from 78%in 2015 to 85% in 2022. As of October 2022, therefore, currency in circulation had risen to N3.23 trillion; out of which only N500 billion was within the Banking System while N2.7 trillion remained permanently outside the system; thereby distorting the financial policy and efficient management of inflation;
c. The huge volume of Bank Notes outside the banking system has proven to be practically unavailable for economic activities and by implication, re**rd the attainment of potential economic growth;
d. Economic growth projections make it imperative for government to aim at expanding financial inclusion in the country by reducing the number of the unbanked population; and

e. Given the prevailing security situation across the country, which keeps improving, it also becomes compelling for government to deepen its continuing support for security agencies to successfully combat banditry and ransom-taking in Nigeria

8.Notwithstanding the initial setbacks experienced, the evaluation and feedback mechanism set up has revealed that gains have emerged from the policy initiative.

9.I have been reliably informed that since the commencement of this program, about N2.1 trillion out of the banknotes previously held outside the banking system, had been successfully retrieved.

10.This represents about 80% of such funds. In the short to medium and long terms, therefore, it is expected that there would be:

a. A strengthening of our macro economic parameters;
b. Reduction of broad money supply leading to a deceleration of the velocity of money in the economy which should result in less pressures on domestic prices;
c. Lowering of Inflation as a result of the accompanying decline in money supply that will slow the pace of inflation;
d. Collapse of Illegal Economic Activities which would help to stem corruption and acquisition of money through illegal ways;
e. Exchange Rate stability;
f. Availability of Easy Loans and lowering of interest rates; and
g. Greater visibility and transparency of our financial actions translating to efficient enforcement of our anti- money laundering legislations.
11.I am not unaware of the obstacles placed on the path of innocent Nigerians by unscrupulous officials in the banking industry, entrusted with the process of implementation of the new monetary policy. I am deeply pained and sincerely sympathise with you all, over these unintended outcomes.

12.To stem this tide, I have directed the CBN to deploy all legitimate resources and legal means to ensure that our citizens are adequately educated on the policy; enjoy easy access to cash withdrawal through availability of appropriate amount of currency; and ability to make deposits.

13.I have similarly directed that the CBN should intensify collaboration with anti-corruption agencies, so as to ensure that any institution or person(s) found to have impeded or sabotaged the implementation should be made to bear the full weight of the law.

14.During the extended phase of the deadline for currency swap, I listened to invaluable pieces of advice from well meaning citizens and institutions across the nation.

15.I similarly consulted widely with representatives of the State Governors as well as the Council of State. Above all, as an administration that respects the rule of law, I have also noted that the subject matter is before the courts of our land and some pronouncements have been made.

16. To further ease the supply pressures particularly to our citizens, I have given approval to the CBN that the old N200 bank notes be released back into circulation and that it should also be allowed to circulate as legal tender with the new N200, N500, and N1000 banknotes for 60 days from February 10, 2023 to April 10 2023 when the old N200 notes ceases to be legal tender.

17.In line with Section 20(3) of the CBN Act 2007, all existing old N1000 and N500 notes remain redeemable at the CBN and designated points.

18.Considering the health of our economy and the legacy we must bequeath to the next administration and future generations of Nigerians, I admonish every citizen to strive harder to make their deposits by taking advantage of the platforms and windows being provided by the CBN.

19.Let me assure Nigerians that our administration will continue to assess the implementation with a view to ensuring that Nigerians are not unnecessarily burdened. In this regard, the CBN shall ensure that new notes become more available and accessible to our citizens through the banks.

20.I wish to once more appeal for your understanding till we overcome this difficult transient phase within the shortest possible time.

21.Fellow citizens, on the 25th of February, 2023 the nation would be electing a new President and National Assembly members. I am aware that this new monetary policy has also contributed immensely to the minimization of the influence of money in politics.

22.This is a positive departure from the past and represents a bold legacy step by this administration, towards laying a strong foundation for free and fair elections.

23.I urge every citizen therefore, to go out to vote for their candidates of choice without fear, because security shall be provided and your vote shall count.

24.I however admonish you to eschew violence and avoid actions capable of disrupting the electoral processes. I wish us all a successful General Elections.

Thank you for listening. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Drama ensued, Tuesday 19th July, 2022 outside the resident of the Distinguished Senator Effiong Dickson Bob - the leader, Uyo Senatorial District of the People's Democratic Party as the serving Chairman of Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, Mr. Iniobong Orok allegedly slapped one of the current Local Government Councillors - Hon. Effanga Patrick, who is representing Ubium North 111 in Nsit Ubium Legislative Council.

The incident was said to have occurred immediately after Uyo Senatorial District Caucus Meeting of the Party held at Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

According to an eye-witness, "the Councilor approached the Chairman to have a word with him, after he (Iniobong Orok) was purportedly refused to pick the councilor's phone calls."

NUJ FIDELITY CHAPEL BEGINS FAMILIARIZATION TOUR TO MDAs
..Visits NCoS A'Ibom State Command

Fidelity Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council in a bit to build a sustainable relationship with its critical partners to improve on service delivery, increase the chances of clarifying management duties and keep members of the public verifiably informed, met with the Controller of Corrections, Nigerian Correctional Service, Akwa Ibom State Command, CCS Julius Ezugwu on the 12th of May, 2022 to put in motion its Familiarization Tour to government ministries, departments, and agencies MDAs.

The Chairman of Fidelity Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ AKS , Comrade Joseph Ekpo while intimating the Controller of Corrections NCoS, Akwa Ibom State Command on the exigency of the visit also commended the Agency on the transformational stride that NCoS, Akwa Ibom State Command has recorded in the area of reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders serving in their various Custodial Centres. Ekpo cited the recent celebration of an Ex-offender by name Udo Etuk Effiong who had no educational or craftsmanship experience but left their facility with First School Leaving Certificate and a Trade Test.

The all-important meeting afforded the Pen Professionals and the Nigerian Correctional Service, Akwa Ibom State Command sufficient time and the opportunity to share ideas on how to proffer lasting solutions to the challenges backpedaling the agency. Ezugwu who is in charge of the Command gave a rundown on the innovational feat of the agency right from when the National Assembly passed a Bill into law that advocated for the change of name from Nigerian Prison Service to Nigerian Correctional Service with President Mohamadu Buhari assenting to the Bill.

Speaking further, Ezugwu said the visit was timely as the image of Nigerian Correctional Service is often times misrepresented and its programmes underreported. According to him, the new name of the agency to a very great extent has been complementary as the transformation has given room to innovative policies and soothing programmes highly beneficial to the inmates across their facilities in the State which are policies and programmes designed to promote reformation of characters, rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-offenders back into the the society.

"I want to thank God for the grace to host Fidelity Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council. Let me first and foremost applaud the Chairman, Comrade Joseph Ekpo and all the Executive Members of the Chapel. I welcome you to Nigerian Correctional Service, Akwa Ibom State Command. Just as Ekpo as rightly said, one of the challenges that we are facing today is the communication gap between the Agency and the Press. The Press is a very dependable and critical stakeholder to the Nigerian Correctional Service. I will like to give you a brief on what the Service is all about so that we will not be misrepresented.

"Today we have in our Custody 3151 Inmates and we have been managing the Stations without any security breech. We have 5 Stations and one of them is not housing Inmates at the moment. Some are Custodial Centres while some are Non-Custodial Centres. We also have Itu Farm Centre. We have been operating as Nigerian Prison Service until the 31st of July, 2019 when the Federal Government graciously through Mr President assented to our Bill, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) ACT 2019. This new Act has made provision for non-custodial sanctions to take care of minor offences where a Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy is set up. This category of offenders are manage through Parole, Probation and Community Sanctions." The Controller of Corrections briefed.

Ezugwu further sued for a sustainable working relationship with the media as a critical partner in nation building. To consolidate on the gains of the Agency, the Controller of Corrections called on the media to condemn the stigma existing between members of the society and Ex-offenders. Ezugwu also shared his experience on this unhealthy trend how an Ex-offender was always returning to their Custodial Centre at an interlocking space of time until one day he confessed to him on trust that the level of stigmatization that he faces whenever he goes back to the society is so enormous which has been his reason to always commit another crime so as to be remanded again. Ezugwu enjoined the media community to create more awareness on the negative impact of stigmatizing an Ex-offender even as Nigerian Correctional Service continues to partner Human Rights Authorities for a better society.

The Secretary of Fidelity Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Mkpoikana Enoh in his remarks thanked the Controller of Corrections, Nigeria Correctional Service, Akwa Ibom State Command, CCS Julius Ezugwu, the Command Public Relations Officer CPRO, ACS Richards Metong and other high ranking Officers of the Command for the warmest welcome accorded the Chapel. Enoh while reassuring the Controller of Corrections of a dependable symbiosis between the Agency and the Media reaffirmed the Chapel's conviction in all the added services that the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) ACT 2019 has highlighted and implemented.
