*SEN. UCHE EKWUNIFE; MORE THAN A DEMOCRACY ICON; IN THE SERVICE OF THE PEOPLE*

Just a few days ago, Nigeria celebrated the *Democracy Day*. A day we usually remember heroes and heroines who sacrificed so much, even their lives; and those still marching on the scouched sand of the earth to give the country a befitting democratic era, where we now have *government of the people, for the people and by the people*! There is no better form of government than the one the people chose themselves. No matter how flawed.

While we rejoice in the euphoria of enjoying 25 years of uninterrupted democracy; the longest ever since our independent, I am happy to talk about an Amazon, a political leader, a democratic icon who is shaping for better the course of our political history, at her level.

Senator Uche Ekwunife, CON embodies what we all need in a democrat. She is empathic, audacious, and exudes confidence, which she also effectively deploys to serve the people. It is in her DNA. While she celebrated the Democracy Day, she said inter-alia; "let us uphold the principles of democracy and strive towards a future where justice, fairness, and gender equality prevail for all Nigerians, while ensuring that the interests, needs and priorities of both men and women are taken into consideration, thereby recognizing the diversity of different groups of women and men as equal partakers of our shared humanity".

Ifekaolaedo has always displayed the thoughts of one of America's great leaders, Sen. Hillary Clinton, who wrote the most enchanting books: *Leave no Child Behind* and *It Takes a Village to Raise a Child*. These two books express the importance of showing care and love to mankind which Sen. Uche Ekwunife embodies in all her political life. Iyom never wants to leave anybody behind. Her unquantifiable attributes and great achievements always point towards that.

We all saw the Senator Uche Ekwunife Skills Acquisition and Training Center she built at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, where students will learn practical skills to make them start off well in life immediately they graduate. This is what we call "thinking about the next generation and not the next election."

Women of Igboukwu and Nri danced excitedly as she completed the Lady Lucy Ogudebe Health Center and Nri Health Center, respectively, and equipped them to cater for women and children at their respective locations.

All the Federal Government Agencies she attracted to Anambra State are speedily being completed to take off immediately, with its attendant employment opportunities for our people.

Adaugo Igbo has empowered more than 5000 women with all manner of equipment and cash across Anambra State, who are contributing to their families. More than 600 youths and graduates are gainfully employed in one federal government ministry or agency since her days in the National Assembly; or the other taking care of their various families. This is *democracy in action*. Stomach democracy is one of the best democracies. People don't sing hallelujah with empty stomachs.

Madam Janet, one of the women Iyom built one of the 34 three bedroom furnished bungalows in Anambra State, called to say that "only God will bless Iyom for me. It's now raining and rain don't soak my house anymore." These are testimonies that gladden Iyom's heart that always spurs her do more whenever opportunities call.

In all, these are democracy dividends, without which the people will not feel the impact of democracy.

The roads Iyom attracted are still being used by the people. The Emmanuel Ogudebe Scholarship scheme is still ongoing. Those who have benefitted from it since her days in the bank are all gainfully employed and engaged in businesses of their own.

For some of us who are witnesses to Sen. Uche Ekwunife's benevolence and touch of kindness, I know there will be a shout out to Iyom; *HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY*.

What a pillage of antithesis!

THE YORUBAS ARE BECOMING AN INSECURE, FRIGHTENED AND SECOND-RATE NATION

By Kola Odetola

No woman likes a clingy, insecure man. But that is what we Yorubas are becoming, a frightened, insecure and second-rate nation. So fearful that we can't even accept one of our own because his mother is Igbo. There was a time when the word swagger was synonymous with the Yoruba. Reflecting self assurance and confidence. We exuded belief. The Igbos secretly admired us. They adopted our clothes and music. They flocked to our churches.

We accommodated strangers because we were so sure of ourselves, of our standing in the world, our stature, our swag that we knew our guests were not a threat. Now all that has drained away. We are now like the insecure man who marries a pretty woman and is secretly consumed by self doubt, fearing he is not good enough for her, tracks her every movement, obsessively going through her phone, hates her male colleagues because he is petrified she will leave him for soneone better. Is this how low we have fallen that we now fear those we once used to regard as culturally inferior to us? We once said the Igbos could not dance, could not dress, lacked poise and polish, were not as read as us. Now we work ourselves into a frenzy about them taking over a Yoruba city hundreds of miles from the nearest hamlet in the South East.

One of the greatest ever Yoruba leaders Adekunle Fajuyi once gave his life rather than live with the dishonour of handing over his Igbo guest to those who wanted to murder him. We now compete with each other to denounce our Igbo guests whose only crime is trading and living in our midst, ideologically handing them bound hand and foot to the caliphate who hate and distrust us as much as they hate and distrust them.

We look for wild statements of a few Igbos to justify our fear of all of them, in doing so demonstrating not our courage but our fear, our insecurity, our deep-rooted inferiority complex towards a tribe that has outmatched us and outpaced us.

A tribe that rose from the ruins of a war in which they lost 10% of their population but refused to break, to wallow in self pity, to feel sorry for themselves, did not fear those who besieged their land, but went forth and conquered with commerce those who had conquered their land with bombs. They bought our property while we frittered the proceeds on women and easy living, then having wasted our inheritance accuse those with greater foresight and discipline of taking over land that we freely sold to them .They take care of their relatives, training them in the family trade while we turn ours to househelps and drivers. They pool their resources together while ours are used to tear our families apart. They build businesses, we chase every lowly special adviser looking for government contracts. They have learnt to thrive when marginalized - meaning that even though they are excluded from government largesse, they still have a lower level of poverty than we do.

It shows in sports. In the 1980's, the national football team was split down the middle between Igbos and Yorubas, with the Yorubas dominating the more glamorous and creative roles. For every Okala, there was an Odegbami, every Chukwu a Muda Lawal, every Stanley Okonkwo a Fekix Owolabi. But since the 90's and noughties, the roll of honour in our national game has been claimed by the Igbos. Who have the Yorubas produced to match the profile and performances of Jay Jay Okocha, Emmanuel Amuneke, Kanu Nwankwo, Mikel Obi, Vincent Onyeama. When ability, fortitude, resilience, drive and determination are needed, we see the Igbos. But when patronage, easy living and dissolute lifestyles are on show, enter the Yorubas!

We can't even plan coups properly. The most incompetent coup ever planned in Nigerian history was the one plotted by Yoruba officers in beer parlours over pepper soup and big stout against Abacha, leading to its most senior officer grovelling before the dictator pleading for his miserable life. The coup before that was planned by Igbo and Delta officers - the Orkar putsch in 1990 - saw the prime movers defiant to the bitter end, facing death with honour.

How did we end up here? Twenty-five years of flirting with power at the centre, of living off and chasing unearned income, of prostrating before the caliphate have turned us to feudal retainers, men who have lost their manhood. We are cowed into silence when state-sponsored gangs rampage across our lands ra**ng our women, burning our farms, slaughtering our yourh. The few who find the courage to fight back we disown, we call them ruffians. When our Youths protest against injustice as they did during the , we attribute it fittingly to an Igbo plot. And why not, seeing the qualities needed to organise a protest so well executed it captured the international air waves for days required courage, initiative and drive. Qualities we are now so enfeebled, so morally vacous we happily agree belong to the Igbos.

A fish rots from the head. Our legacy was built by giants like Fajuyi, Awolowo and to a lesser extent Abiola. Men who gave their freedom and their lives rather than surrender their principles. But what have we now? Bola Tinubu who keeps quiet when millions of Igbos are put at risk in his city by vicious tribal bigotry and baiting because of his lust for power. Bola Tinubu who buried his head when his own people were being gunned down in churches in their own land by gun men under the protection of his Fulani bosses. In the halcyon days of the founder of the modern Yoruba race the closest Bola Ahmed Tinubu would have got to power would have been organising security at UPN party conferences. Today he is the acknowledged leader of the Yoruba race!

We have these last few weeks of eternal shame revealed our weakness, our insecurity, the spiritual barrenness that now lies like a void at the centre of our world. We fear a Yoruba man because he has an Igbo mother! That's how supine, how fearful we have become. We forget the Yorubas killed in their hundreds last year by state-protected Fulani gunmen because we are desperate to be awarded office by those who defile our women and pillage our land.

Principle counts for nothing. We are up for sale and not for very much. This is how far we have fallen. We have won an election but lost our soul, we are in office but not in power. We are now pound land, okrika wake version of the Fulani elite who in spite of their monopoly of power at the centre feared the commercial acumen and success of the Igbo for five decades so much they turned on them whenever they felt threatened by their own inadequacies as we have done the last few weeks.

We are now a pale imitation of the Fulani, a frightened, insecure, tremulous and second-rate nation clinging like leeches to power we seek at any cost because we have nothing else to offer. The Igbos have not held power for 60 years but they thrive. We have just won it for the third time in the same period and still, like the Fulani, we fear them. This is how low a once great people have fallen.

*MERGER AND COALITION: A NECESSITY TO RESCUE NIGERIA FROM THE APC POOR GOVERNANCE - ATIKU*

The former Vice President of Nigeria during the 4th Republic (1999-2007), Atiku Abubakar, has called for the merger and coalition of political parties to rescue Nigeria from the inept and oppressive All Progressives Congress (APC) regime.

Atiku, who is the national leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made this statement today when a group known as the National Coalition for PDP Support Group paid him a solidarity visit.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the chairman, Engr. Anucha Katchy, declared that they have confidence in Atiku, who is also the Wazirin Adamawa, because of his high sense of patriotism and track record of performance while in office. He recalled that Atiku, as the former VP, was the head of the nation's economic team that negotiated our debt relief from the Paris Club.

He advised that Atiku, whom he described as a statesman and a philanthropist, should beware of sycophants within and identify with youths and women, who form the bulk of eligible voters.

In response, the Waziri expressed gratitude to the group for their visit and emphasized his belief in empowering the youth and women. He mentioned that he had made a promise in his manifesto to allocate 70% of appointment positions to the youth and allocate $10 billion to empower the nation's SMEs, many of which are owned by women.

Atiku further stated that for the country to grow and sustain its current democratic experiment, the APC regime must be voted out. He stated that the only way to do this is for Nigerians to close ranks and form a merger or coalition of political groups. He stated that anyone in the PDP who opposes the merger with other political groups is a fifth columnist working for the APC to turn the country into a one-party state. He advised Nigerians to remain steadfast and work for the survival of our country.

APC chieftain begs opposition, stakeholders to mobilize, push APC away in 2027;

The former National Vice Chairman, North-West, of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Salihu Mohammed Lukman, has urged opposition parties and other critical stakeholders across the country to mobilise Nigerians towards dislodging the APC in 2027.

Lukman, a former Director-General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, PGF, in a statement on Saturday, said pushing the APC out of power remains the only way to address the avalanche of challenges bedevilling the country.

He said defeating the APC in 2027 is possible if opposition parties and Nigerians unite, just like top politicians united and succeeded in pushing the military back to the barracks.

“Nigerians are groaning over the spate of killings, kidnappings for ransom, food crisis, hike in electricity tariff, and high cost of transportation, goods and services in the country occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy by the APC-led government”, he added

“Patriotic Nigerians and democrats must resume the business of national mobilisation to produce an alternative democratic platform to APC and all the charades of registered political parties. We must summon the courage and believe in the power of possibility”

“Just like we succeeded in pushing the military back to the barracks and defeating the PDP in 2015, it is possible to create a politically viable and truly popular democratically alternative platform that can put the APC in its rightful place and overcome the current extreme right-wing adventurously unplanned leadership of President Asiwaju Tinubu”

“Nigerians must be mobilised to rise above dishonest politicians who only manipulate their way to power and reduce citizens to the status of conquered people. Democracy will be worthless if the result is only to elect civilian overlords”

The former Director General of the Progressives Governors Forum said the APC has abandoned its vision and reduced it to a mere platform for winning elections. ~follow Sylvester Joseph

Opposition swells against Damagum over NWC’s stance on merger

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has come under attack for the statement that the party was not in merger talks with any political party. Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who was PDP two-time presidential candidate, had last year told leaders of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) who visited him, that there is a need for opposition parties to work together to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku had told them that Nigeria’s democracy is fast becoming a one-party system, and warned that when Emmanuel Masha PORT HARCOURT I ndications are rife that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, may have lost the battle for the control of the state to his godson and current Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Political watchers in the state are convinced that Fubara is tightening the noose on Wike from all sides, especially with his new found boldness, which according to him shows that the Jungle has matured. The governor had removed most of Wike’s loyalists in the Rivers State Executive, including the Prof. Zaccheaus Adangor, the former Attorney General, who Fubara accused of sabotaging his government’s fight against the now court ousted Rivers State House of Assembly led by Hon. Martins Amaewhule. Also, Fubara has won the battle against local government chairmen, who were appointed by Wike and whose tenure would end soon but want to remain in office based on the extension granted them by the proWike lawmakers. Rivers: Wike loses grounds to Fubara there is a one-party system, democracy is endangered.

“We have all seen how the APC is increasingly turning Nigeria into a dictatorship of one party. If we don’t come together to challenge what the ruling party is trying to create, our democracy will suffer for it, and its consequences will affect the generations yet unborn,” he said. And a few weeks ago, the former Vice President played host to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 polls, Mr. Peter Obi, thereby provoking rumour A declaration by a River State High Court a few weeks ago, nullifying the extension of the tenure of 23 council chairmen has put an end to their quest to stay additional six months. In the ruling, the presiding Judge, Justice, D.G. Kio declared that the Local Government Law No. 2 of 2024, which sought to extend the LG chairmen’s tenure by six months, conflicts with the 1999 Constitution and Section 9(1) of Rivers State Local Government Law No. 5 of 2018. The court also declared the Local Government Law No.2 of 2024, which extended the tenure of local government chairmen by six months after the expiration of their tenure as invalid. The court held that the law was inconsistent with the 1999 constitution and Section 9 (1) of Rivers State Law No 5 of 2018 which fixed three years for local government chairmen and councilors. Justice, D.G. Kio, in his judgment, said the recent extension of local government chairmen’s tenure was invalid in suit number PHC/1320/ CS/2024, a case instituted by of possible merger between PDP and LP. But PDP, after its 587th NWC meeting in Abuja last Tuesday said the party is not “engaged in any merger, fusion or amalgamation talks with any other political party or interest group.” The National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba who issued the statement, claimed that the party “remains strong and formidable, capable of winning elections in a free, fair and transparent electoral process in our country.” He told PDP members, Enyiada Cookey-Gam & 6 Ors vs.

The Governor of Rivers State & Ors. The court stated that the lawful tenure for LG chairmen and councillors remained three years as stipulated by the 2018 law, saying any attempt to extend the tenure was unlawful, and violates the officials’ oath of office. It would be recalled that the 27 lawmakers elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the height of the crisis between Wike and Fubara over the control of the PDP machinery in the state. Another court in the state, had earlier this month barred the 25 lawmakers from parading themselves as lawmakers, having vacated their seats. The judge, Charles Wali, ordered them to stay away from the House and restrained them from taking any action in their capacity as the state’s lawmakers pending further hearing in the case fixed for 29 May. He gave the exparte order in a suit instituted by Victor Oko-Jumbo, a factional speaker of the assembly and democracy institutions and the international community to disregard any report suggesting any form of merger between the PDP and any other political party “as such is not in the contemplation of our great party.”

Party stakeholders however, described such statements as “reckless” and unbecoming of any opposition party. A source who pleaded anonymity said it was an indication the NWC is working for the party in power to weaken the PDP. “It is very disappointing,” the source stated, adding that the responsibility of Ambassador Umar Damagum-led NWC is to accommodate everybody. “Merger is a political process. If you say you are against it you can as well say you are not democratic. You cannot say you don’t want to expand; that is not what a political party stands for. “Political parties should have more inclusions,” he added.

The source disclosed that talks are going on between Atiku and Peter Obi and other people “for the possibility of working together and making sure that APC is dislodged in the next election. Who takes over is not the issue now. The primary thing is that there is a strong opposition formation formidable enough to dislodge APC in 2027.” He stated that who should be the candidate is not being discussed, because, according to him, “In political process you don’t start with that because if you start with that the talk will break up; even in global context, ambition will kill the agenda. “The current position of the NWC is not encouraging in that direction.” He added that there is a “constellation” of party stakeholders towards the August National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP. According to him, party leaders are in agreement to rescue PDP from “any factional agenda.”

The source assured that there would be change in the party leadership, because Damagum is only in acting capacity. There was a consensus at the last (NEC) meeting. The only reason it has to be August is because there was a requirement for North Central to put their house in order to produce a replacement for Senator (Iyorchia) Ayu. That one is not in contention any longer,” he stated. Senator Nicholas Tofowomo in his reaction said it is time to rebuild Nigeria from the current economic quagmire and merger is the way to go. “PDP should learn from APC which fused with CPC and CAN before the 2015 elections. Nigerians are very disturbed by the current economic quagmire, and this is the time for PDP to merge with other parties to rebuild the country,” he said. The Senator who represented Ondo South in the 9th Senate added that PDP NWC has spoken for themselves, but not for the leadership of the party and Nigerians at large who are yearning for a change. Tofowomo said: “It is not about apportioning blame, but all over the country, there is abject poverty and the people are looking at the PDP to rescue the situation.

*BECAUSE OF SUBSIDY REMOVAL: THEY DISPLAYED MY MOCK COFFIN PUBLICLY~*

President Goodluck Jonathan.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says pictures of his mock coffin displayed in the media during the anti-fuel subsidy removal protests of 2012 traumatised his aged mother who had lost eight children.

Jonathan said this in his recently published book titled, My Transition Hours.

The former President said, “The protests continued unabated. In all of these, one woman I pitied most was my aged mother who was with me in the State House.

“Every day, she watched on television protesters carrying a casket with my picture on it and having the inscription ‘Rest In Peace.’

“I could imagine her trauma. This is a woman who had 10 live births with only my elder sister and I surviving.”

Jonathan said during the protests, several notable Nigerians visited him, asking him to reverse the increment in the pump price of petrol.

Some of the prominent Nigerians who visited him include: General-Overseer, Living Faith Mission (Winners Chapel) Bishop David Oyedepo; Primate of the Anglican Church, Rt.Rev Nichola Okoh and eight other clerics.

He said what was more disheartening was the fact that the opposition in Lagos had hijacked the protests.

Jonathan added that even the Nigeria Labour Congress which had been briefed on the matter before the subsidy removal was announced was co-opted into joining the protests.

The former President added, “In Lagos State for instance, it was like a carnival. Musicians, comedians and other celebrities were engaged by opposition elements to join the protests. Refreshments were served to protesters.

“Every morning Lagos State government workers cleaned up the Gani Fawehinmi Park and prepared it for the day’s protests. It appeared as though the protesters were very special guests of the Lagos State Government. Similar scenarios played out in other opposition controlled states.”

Jonathan further stated that the House of Representatives, which was led by pro-opposition Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, decided to exploit the situation.

He said the House accused him of fleeing the country in a bid to exploit the situation for political gain.

The former President added, “The House of Representatives whose Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, was hobnobbing with the opposition (he eventually defected to the opposition) did not help matters.

“Thinking that I had left the country for South Africa to attend the centenary celebration of the African National Congress, Speaker Tambuwal convened the House to sit on a Sunday just to condemn the deregulation.

“That was the first and only time in Nigeria’s political history that the parliament sat on a Sunday. At that sitting, an opposition member of the House got up to allege that I had abandoned the nation at such a crucial time to join festivities in South Africa.

“Unknown to the House, on that same day while they were sitting, I was at Eagle Square to inaugurate mass transit vehicles my administration purchased to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal.”

Same People who Occupied Nigeria then suddenly became dumb without Brains anymore.

*A MERGER FOR VICTORY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN LOSING ALONE*

One very important message I took away from the visit of PDP National WhatsApp Admins to His Excellency, Dr. Atiku Abubakar, GCON, is his frankness and disposition about the opposition merging together to fight for the 2027 general elections together. In all that he said after our presentations to him, he never talked about himself or contesting. He was more interested in how the mess and the economic siege the APC regimes, from Buhari and now to Tinubu, is causing Nigeria. He is more interested in how Nigerians can begin to enjoy the dividends of democracy rightly once again. He recounted with nostalgia the golden eras of PDP regimes. From Obasanjo/Atiku to Yardua/Jonathan and Jonathan/Sambo regimes were eras that deliberate policy efforts were made to take Nigeria to lofty economic growth era.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar recounted how Nigeria became the favorite investment destination in Africa and the fastest developing country in Africa.

"There is no other way we can win except through merger or some kind of collaboration among all the opposition parties. This is the only way to take out APC, "Atiku emphasized.

Already, Peter Obi has demonstrated good political will by visiting a few PDP leaders to probably intimate them of his willingness to forge a united front for the sake of suffering masses of Nigeria under this APC

PDP, as the senior brother of all the opposition parties, should take deliberate steps to further these discussions and work on it so that it will be realized. All the organs of PDP; Board of Trustees, NWC, PDP Governors Forum, and the National Executive Council, NEC, need to urgently collaborate to ensure that this can be realized.
