Hanoky Media is looking for bright, talented, dynamic and reliable freelance assistant copy editors. The ideal candidate will report to the Managing Editor and will be responsible for proofreading stories for errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling while checking for readability, style, and agreement of stories with our editorial policies. This is a great opportunity to be part of one of the fast-rising news platforms in Nigeria!
Experience or knowledge of Journalism and Copy Editing is not required but will help set you apart from other applicants.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Having at least 6 months of editorial experience is an added advantage
2. Strong writing and editing skills
3. Be able to work independently
4. Strong communication skills
5. Must have a flexible schedule (to accommodate fluctuating workloads each week)
6. Strong research, writing, and editorial skills, with the ability to edit and rewrite quickly on deadline
7. Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize workload
8. Demonstrated ability to work closely with a team
9. Experience working with a house style guide
10. Comfort and confidence in making content decisions
11. Possess a working laptop and mobile device - important!
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Make adequate technical edits (grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc.)
2. Ensure formatting aligns with our specifications (headers, font, text size, colour, etc.)
3. Review content (fact-checking, source linking, internal links, appropriate tone, follow style guides, outline points etc.)
4. Run content through Grammarly (plagiarism check)
5. Provide writer feedback (if an article is kicked back to the writer, how can they improve?)
6. Suggest revisions, such as changing words and rearranging sentences and paragraphs to improve the clarity or accuracy of stories.
7. Carry out research where necessary to confirm sources, verify facts, dates, and statistics of data embedded into stories.
