I am deeply saddened by the devastating explosion that occurred in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Tuesday night.
The explosion killed two persons and wounded about 80 others. It also destroyed several buildings, vehicles, and other properties.
It is worrisome that the cause of the blast is being attributed to the activities of illegal miners. Those behind the inexcusable and reckless behavior that has created the conditions for this sad incident to occur must be fished out and punished.
I commiserate with the government and people of Oyo State and call on all concerned agencies of government to unravel the circumstances that led to this tragedy with alacrity.
I have directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to work with the Oyo State Government to offer immediate and comprehensive relief to the victims.

President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday night in Abuja, said he benefitted immensely from his close relationship with long-time confidant, Chief Bisi Akande, and that he considered himself lucky to have him.
Speaking at a dinner held at the State House Conference Centre to celebrate the 85th birthday of the elder statesman, President Tinubu said he was delighted that the sentiments he had about the former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who is also a former governor of Osun State, resonated well with other speakers at the event.
โListening to the remarks from the podium, they are inspirational enough. It has been said that you are Mr. Integrity, we, the younger ones, are very lucky to have you. You deserve to be celebrated. Thank you for always being forthright and being honest. I do not want to repeat myself beyond the fact that, lucky enough for me, I have you. I thank God for your life,โ the President said to Chief Akande.
Recounting the role of Chief Akande in the process leading to the emergence of the APC as a mega party and its eventual election victory in 2015, the President stated that the lessons in forgiveness and patience that he learnt from the elder statesman eventually led him to becoming the President of Nigeria.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has issued a stern warning to transport unions, including the Road Transport Workers Union of Nigeria (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and Clearance Agents Association.
The governor noted that government will impose severe penalties, including jail terms on those that violate load restriction laws in the state.
Zulum served the warning in Maiduguri on Thursday during a meeting with the leadership of transport unions in the state at the council chamber of the government house.
The governor emphasized the importance of adhering to load restrictions as mandated by government's transportation regulations. However, he announced that Borno State Government will send a bill to the State House of Assembly for the review of existing road and transportation laws to provide explicit and stern punishment for violators.
Governor Zulum also instructed that weighbridges are to be installed in some strategic places to ensure that owners and operators of heavy trucks adhere to load restrictions on highways.

Agriculture: Zulum orders reactivation of South Chad Irrigation Scheme
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced a plan to reactivate the South Chad Irrigation Scheme aimed at providing a livelihood for the resettled communities.
The governor made the announcement on Monday in Wulgo, a community in Ngala Local Government Area.
"Borno State Government will see how to open up and expand the irrigation activities on the shores of Lake Chad. We will resettle new communities and we shall reactivate the South Chad Irrigation Scheme in order to address food crises in Borno State," Zulum said.
The South Chad Irrigation Scheme comprising of communities along the water shores of Lake Chad, including Gamboru, Dambore, Wulgo, Marte, and Kirenuwa will create employment opportunities and enhance food security for the people in the region.
The governor noted that the State Ministry of Agriculture has mapped out a strategy for the reactivation of irrigation schemes across the state.
He said that the reactivation of the irrigation scheme would provide the resettled communities with livelihoods without relying on food aid for survival.
"You can see the quantum of food that is being distributed here, it is not sustainable to continue with such distribution. It is imperative, therefore, to look for medium- and longer-term sustainable solutions that will completely address food crises in the state. The State Ministry of Agriculture has taken a far-reaching decision that will address the food crises. Among them is the reactivation of the irrigation scheme across Borno State," Governor Zulum said.
The governor, accompanied by the senator representing Borno Central, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan, a member of the House of Representatives, Engr Bukar Talba, a member representing Ngala at the State Assembly, Hon Bukar Abatcha and the Local Government Chairman of Ngala, visited Gamboru, Wulgo and Dambore irrigation sites.

President Tinubu to Security Chiefs: You are making good progress, but there must be conclusive victory
President Bola Tinubu has asked the nationโs security chiefs to ensure that there is conclusive victory against the myriad of security threats assailing the country.
Addressing security chiefs and heads of intelligence agencies at a Presidential Security Briefing at the State House, in Abuja, on Friday, President Tinubu said while good progress is being made with the elimination of some security threats across multiple theatres, success will ultimately be defined by a final conclusion to the multi-dimensional menace.
โWe have too many investments that we need to make now in soft and physical infrastructure, in social security, in MSME empowerment, and other growth enablers. We are pursuing a $1 trillion economy in the next few years, and our efforts will be undermined if we do not finally wrap up our progressive onslaught against enemies of progress. Be encouraged. The confidence of our people in your capacity is rising, and they are appreciative of the sacrifices of our men and women.
โThe success you are recording is undeniable. Nigerians are seeing it, but the avoidable errors, as witnessed recently in Kaduna, are unacceptable and cannot be repeated. I am pleased that coordination between all agencies has dramatically improved over recent months, but there is no room for celebrations until we can end this; until we can bring our troops back to their own localities, and until we can free up resources for our critical economic expansion programme,โ the President firmly stated.
The President emphasized that the armed forces must deliver on his objective to ensure the nation achieves a sustainable production of two million barrels of crude oil per day, including condensates, within the first quarter of 2024.

President Tinubu: Nigeria's progressive movement must deliver on quality education for all Nigerian children and jobs for youths
President Bola Tinubu says democracy must be progressive and inclusive with a primary focus on pragmatically addressing poverty through the provision of job opportunities for youths and quality education for all Nigerian children.
Receiving members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives' Congress (APC), on Thursday, in Lagos, President Tinubu expressed support for the establishment of the National Institute of Progressive Studies by the party.
The President noted that the Institute is expected to conduct diligent research and educate all party members on the principles of democracy and good governance while providing a distinct identity for the party.
''Democracy has faced challenges in the past, but I believe in a promising future for our country. We will deliver it. I am committed to supporting a strong and ideologically-determined democracy that is progressive, inclusive, and focused on eliminating poverty while providing quality education for our children.
''Collaboration with various government arms is crucial, and I commend the leadership of our party for working hard to promote these essential ideals,'' the President stated.
The President called on the leadership of the party to target more youths and women in its e-registration and digital membership validation exercise scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2024.

President Tinubu: Nigeria is being re-engineered for the prosperity of all and not an elite minority
President Bola Tinubu says his administration will not stop working tirelessly to revamp the nationโs economy and create viable opportunities for young people to meaningfully participate in an inclusive, labour-intensive economy where businesses can thrive.
President Tinubu made the declaration at the State House in Marina, Lagos State, on Wednesday, during a town-hall meeting with traditional rulers, chairpersons of Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and other political-office holders in the state.

We won't rest until you get justice, VP Shettima assures Plateau communities
* Says we must embrace peace, stop killings
The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration will not rest on its oars until victims of the gruesome attacks on communities in Barkin Ladi and Bokkos local government areas of Plateau State get justice and the residents are safe.
The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, gave the assurance when he visited crisis-ravaged communities in Plateau State to condole with the people and state government over the recent killings in Barkin Ladi and Bokkos local government areas of the state.
Vowing vehemently that the Killings on the Plateau and other parts of the country must stop, the VP said, "Now Please accept our heartfelt condolences. Please accept our deepest apologies. Because we wonโt rest until you access justice and until you are safe."
Senator Shettima informed the people about how heart-broken his principal, President Tinubu, had been since he received news of the gory incident, saying the president "is deeply shaken by this tragedy and shares in this unspeakable sorrow that has shattered the joy of Christmas across the country.
"When one community bleeds, the entire nation feels the pain. The pain we feel now transcends ethnicity or religion, geography or politics. The grief that binds us is a testament to our shared humanity, not differences," he added.
Identifying with the grieving families who lost loved ones in the attack, the Vice President acknowledged the fact that it is an indescribable nightmare to bury families, describing it as a rare experience that is much more unbearable than the pain of losing one or two loved ones.
"We cannot fathom the depth of this grief beyond the experience of the bereaved. We can only offer to assuage your pain. What has happened to you is a funeral for the entire nation. Our hearts bleed alongside yours, our dear brothers and sisters in Bokkos, Barkin-Ladi, and all over Plateau State," he stated.
VP Shettima assured the people that the Tinubu administration is out to protect them and ensure justice, even though it may appear as if the government has failed them in their time of serious need.
Noting that justice is the path to collective safety, unity, and healing of the nation, he said, "We came to power promising to uphold the sanctity of every citizen's life, and now is the time to reassure you that this inter-community violence, which has hijacked the humanity and serenity of this beautiful State over the past decades, will never persist under our watch. We will harness all our resources to bring those responsible to justice; we will not rest until we are able to prevent the recurrence of these heinous acts.
"Your blood, your tears, and your cries stain our collective conscience. We are here for you, we are here, resolute in our commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators of these mindless killings face the full force of the law."
He however appealed to the people of Plateau State to resist what he described as "the temptation to succumb to sectional divisions or the poisonous rhetoric of hatred towards" their fellow citizens while assuring that the government is set out to ensure justice and security for them.
"This violence persists due to this dangerous practice of treating criminals as ambassadors of their group, where the law is taken into our hands, and where protection fails. But this is not the case now. This is a promise," Shettima assured.
