Family Planning, Episode One

“I’m pregnant. This is a serious problem for me. I never expected to get pregnant now. How did this happen to me? My husband got a vasectomy because he didn’t want me to get pregnant now. I’m still in 100-level and I would like to finish my university education before getting pregnant and starting to bear children. How am I going to explain this to my husband? How will I explain to him that I got pregnant when I’m sure the baby is not from him?” Emilia was in his room at the female hostel when all these questions and thoughts came to her mind. She had just realized that her monthly flow was delayed by five days.

She had gone out to the pharmacy by the roadside opposite the school gate that evening and bought a pregnancy test strip. When she came back to the hostel, she dipped it in her urine and it showed the positive line. Her heart was pounding very fast because she knew that it would be hard to explain to her husband how she got pregnant when he was placed on family planning immediately after their wedding. The vasectomy which was performed on her husband would ensure that he will never be able to get a woman pregnant. Before that was done, some of his child-making liquid was collected and frozen by their healthcare provider at the hospital. Their plan is that it would be used to fertilize his wife when she finish her university education.

“What am I going to do? How am I going to break this news to my husband? I don’t know how he would take it because he is on family planning and he would not expect me to get pregnant. I was so happy that I married a man who agreed to get a vasectomy and to allow me to complete my education before getting me pregnant. But look at me now. I’m pregnant in 100-level. I think I have been careless with myself.” Emilia said. She was still holding the pregnancy test strip and looking at it like a stick of broom. She was so worried, so she decided to share the news with her friend, Edna. She left her room and proceeded to Edna’s part of the hostel.

“I’m pregnant Edna! This is bad news for me! I’m so worried and I’m scared I might faint. Please hold me.” Emilia said as soon as she entered Endna’s room.

“Why are you worried that you are pregnant? You are married for goodness sake. You have a husband and I think he would be too happy to hear the news. Why are you worried about your pregnancy?” Edna asked her friend Emilia who was sitting on one of the side stools in the house. Edna was drinking soaked garri. She had just returned from her last lecture for the day and wanted to use the soaked garri to hold her body before starting to cook.

“My dear, you won’t understand. Ordinarily, this should be good news to me, but it is bad news! It is bad news because my husband has agreed that I will not get pregnant until I finish school. We had agreed that we will only start bearing children when I finish my university education. That was why we went to the hospital and did family planning on my husband. I’m not supposed to get pregnant because my husband got a vasectomy. He is incapable of getting a woman pregnant. Although, he visits me in school every weekend, but he can’t get a woman pregnant because of the vasectomy. It will be very clear to him that I cheated on him with another man.” Emilia lamented bitterly. Tears gushed from her eyes. She used one edge of her dress to wipe her tears.

“So, if I understand you very well, what you are saying is that this pregnancy does not belong to your husband? Is that what you are trying to say?” Edna asked with surprise in her face.

“Yes! I’m sure my husband is not responsible for the baby. I just told you he got a vasectomy. I’m in serious trouble and I’m melting away in fear.” Emilia said. She was still crying and Edna was trying to get her to stop crying.

“So who is responsible for the baby? If your husband isn’t responsible, who got you pregnant then?” Edna asked with curiosity. She leaned closer, so she could hear her friend clearly.

“I think it’s Jerry.” Emillia declared.

“Who is Jerry?” Edna asked.

“Jerry is my boyfriend here in school. We started dating two months ago.” Emilia said. The tears in her eyes continued to roll down like water being poured from a kettle.

“You are married and you still have a boyfriend? How could you do such a thing to your husband? I really don’t know how to advise you right now. All I can say now is that you should calm down so we can think of what to do.” Edna said.

“No! I’m not calming down Edna. I will go home and tell my husband. I think he should know. I don’t want to build my marriage on lies. My marriage is just one year old and I can’t afford to get things wrong this early. I’m going to confess to him. I’m sure he would forgive me. I’m not perfect, I’m just human.” Emilia said as he stormed out of the room. Edna tried to hold her back and advise her against confessing to her husband, but Emilia resisted her.

Soon, Emilia was on her way out of the campus. She was determined to tell her husband the truth and to seek his forgiveness.

“I don’t want to abort this baby and I don’t want to give it to Jerry my boyfriend. He is irresponsible. I was just having fun with him and I never knew he would get me pregnant. My husband is a good man and he would forgive me.” Emilia said to herself as she drove out of the school gate in her car and headed to the town where her husband lives.

The Gym House

Episode 5

“We are going to court and you can’t stop us. In fact, you are lucky to have met us here. May be because you came early. But you can’t stop us from charging your client to court. You will have to come there and defend her. Come to court with whatever evidence you have.” The police man in charge of Ugomma’s case tells Barrister Uche. He was already entering the police van and they were about to drive away when Uche and Julius arrived the police station with the flash drive containing the evidence.

“But I have something here that proves Ugomma did not commit the crime. Why are you bent on charging the wrong suspect? Isn’t that a waste of time? It would amount to wickedness if you charge a suspect not because you are convinced of her guilt but because you just want to appear to be doing your job whereas you are making a big mistake.” Barrister Uche said. He was standing beside the police van and talking to the police officer who was already in the car. The van was steaming and the driver was only waiting for the word go to drive away.

“Are you trying to stand on the way of law enforcement officers? There are consequences for this thing you are doing. You are a lawyer, and I think you should think twice before embarking on this gra gra.” The police officer said.

“This is not gra gra. I’m only trying to protect my client. I insist I have new discoveries and strong evidence that prove no diligent investigation was carried out before my client was wrongly arrested and framed for murder she did not commit. If you go on with this case and arraign my client in court, I may be forced to sue the police and claim damages. I’m sure you don’t want this to happen.” Barrister Uche said with a warning tone. After a long pause, the police officer stepped down from the van.

“This is just one last chance. And I hope what you have there better proves she is innocent. Don’t try me.” The police officer said as they walked into the police station to view the video in the flash drive brought by Uche.

Meanwhile, Julius was at the back of the van talking with Ugomma.

“What has suddenly changed? Why are you now interested in me? I’m happy you brought a lawyer to argue my case, but I’m still curious. Less than a month ago, you wanted nothing to do with me. In fact, you gladly signed a divorce paper I gave you and you never held me back when I was walking out of your house. You showed me in every way that it was over and that you did not want to be with me again. You even said getting married to me was a mistake. So what changed your mind? Why are you helping me?” Ugomma asked. She sincerely wanted to know because the turnaround in Julius’ character towards her was beyond magic.

“I honestly can’t tell what happened. But all I know is that your absence restored all the love I have for you the first time I met you. I suddenly realized your importance the moment I did not see you for more than a week. I realized I did not hate you. I realized you are actually still the beautiful lady I married. I realized I allowed the girls I see on social media to trick me into hating my wife. I thought they were more beautiful than you and even wanted to find a way and go into a relationship with one of them. I actually met with one of them after you left. When I met with her, I realized she was not as beautiful as she appeared on TikTok. Her face was ugly and all the big breasts and backside I saw were not there. She told me she is the same person but I did not believe her. She confessed she used social media filter to make herself more beautiful. Only then I realized you are truly the one I should be with because your beautify is natural without filter. It was wrong for me to have mocked you because of what I thought was a wrong shape. I can't ’stay without you because you are truly my wife.” Julius said.

“It is being long I heard you say such sweet words to me. Today will count as one of the best days of my life. This is the day my husband truly came back to me. After many years of abuse and agony under your roof, I finally have my real husband.” Ugomma said. Tears were rolling down her eyes as she talked. They wanted to hug each other but a police officer prevented that.

Meanwhile, inside the police station, Barrister Uche and the investigative police officer were busy viewing the CCTV footage. They were in the office of the DPO who also wanted to see what happened the day Jerry died. The video played gradually until it got to the point where Jerry’s girlfriend hit his head with the dumbbells. Uche posed it.

“There you have it. That’s the lady you should have arrested in the first place. Not Ugomma. It’s true she was at the crime scene, but she was not the criminal. I demand the release of my client at once.” Barrister Uche said.

The DPO and the investigative police officer looked at themselves and then asked Uche to give them some privacy. Uche walked out of the office and went to the car where Ugomma and Julius were waiting for him.

“Barrister, any luck? Are we finally free to go home?” Julius asked with apprehension in his voice and on his face.

“No, they asked me to wait outside. But I have showed them that Ugomma did not commit the crime. She was only at the crime scene. But if you get out of this mess, you two must be more careful. Look after each other. Julius, you must never push your wife away again. You almost destroyed her life in a flash.” Uche said. He was thirsty so he went to a shop nearby and bought a bottle of what. He was drinking when the police officer came out from the DPO’s office to meet them where the van was parked.

“You are free to go. But you have to follow me to sign some papers.” The police man said. Ugomma was led out of the van and she flew into Julius’s arms. They hugged tightly with tears in their eyes. After a few minutes they drove out of the police station and went home.

A month later, Julius and Ugomma went to the court to say their vows again. That was how Ugomma’s absence made Julius to realize his mistakes. Sometimes, our minds deceive us to see only the wrong things in our partners maybe because we encountered people who we think are more beautiful or handsome. It is not always so. It may take someone’s absence for you to realize their value in your life. Sometimes, you may never have the second chance to make amends like Julius.

The Gym House

Episode 4

“My name is Barrister Uche and I’m the lawyer to Ugomma. I demand to see her at once.” Barrister Uche said as soon as he and Julius got to the police station. Ugomma was brought out from the cell. She looked very rough and this broke Julius’ heart. He wept bitterly and blamed himself for what had happened to Ugomma.
“Oh God! I’m so sorry Ugomma. This was all my fault. If I had treated you well, you wouldn’t have fallen into this problem.” Julius said. He brought out a white handkerchief and wiped tears from his eyes. He rushed and hugged Ugomma so tightly and never wanted to let go of her. It was an emotional moment for both of them.
“You have no right to detain my client for more than 24 hours stipulated by the law. You have detained her for more than seven days.” Barrister Uche said. He was almost shouting.
“If she is your client, why didn’t you come for her earlier? Aren’t you ashamed you abandoned your client in police custody for many days? If I were in her shoes, I will just fire you because you have no reason to be paid. Rubbish.” The police officer at the counter said.
“I came as soon as I heard of her arrest.” Barrister Uche said. He was still angry.
“I demand bail for my client at once. She has suffered many days already. I demand that you grant her bail immediately.” He said.
“No way! Your client is accused of murder. This is a very serious crime and she will remain in our custody until we charge her to court tomorrow. I suggest you go home and prepare to defend her in court. Now, excuse men gentlemen and ladies.” The police officer said as he snatched Ugomma from Julius and led her back to her cell.
Julius felt so guilty and powerless as he watched Ugomma been led away without been able to stop the police man. It was a moment of sorrow for him. The love he felt for Ugomma the first time they met suddenly returned to him. He was prepared to do anything to save her from prison.
“What are we going to do? Ugomma must not go to prison. I know she is innocent.” Julius asked Barrister Uche as they walked out of the police station.
“She won’t go to prison. I have already collected the charge sheet from the police. All we have to do is to prove that she did not kill Jerry and there is only one way of doing that. We have to check the gym house and see if they have CCTV cameras that captured what actually happened when the fight took place.” Barrister Uche said.
“Please do whatever you can. Anything you need, just let me know. Any amount it would cost, let me know. I will pay. I love Ugomma so much. I have made so many mistakes in the past and I want to correct it right now.” Julius said. He was sounding as if he wanted to burst into tears.
“I will help in every way I can.” Barrister Uche said as they drove away from the police station.
It was exactly 4pm in the evening. Julius and Barrister Uche drove straight to the gym house.
“Stay in the car while I go to their security unit to make enquiries.” Barrister Uche said. He walked to the security department of the gym house and met a man sleeping on his desk.
“Excuse me.” Barrister Uche shouts. The security man woke up from his deep sleep. He used the edge of his left hand to rub on his face. He looked very tired and worn out.
“Good evening. My name is Barrister Uche. I need your help. It’s a matter of life and death.” He said.
“Ah! What is it that is about life and death?” The security man asked.
“I’m a lawyer. It’s about my client. She has been arrested for killing Jerry, your late gym instructor. And I can swear to you that she didn’t do it.” Barrister Uche said.
“So, your client was the one who killed our gym instructor? I knew it. I used to see her and I suspected she was a bad person. Thank God she was arrested. Let me tell you, if the police call me today, I will even go to court and give testimony against her. She killed a very good man who used to give me transport fare. Kai! Jerry! I miss you. It shall not be well with that your client. She will go to jail.” The security man said.
“No now, I just told you she didn’t do it. She is innocent and I need your help to prove this in court.” Barrister Uche pleaded. The security man remained adamant. But Uche was smart. He reached for his pocket and brought out freshly minted Naira notes and carefully handed it to the man.
“Are you bribing me?” The security man asked.
“It’s not a bribe. It’s an appreciation for what I need you to help me do.” Barrister Uche said.
“What do you want me to do?” The security man asked. He stretched his hand and took the money and quickly stuffed it in his pocket.
“I’m just taking this money because of God. It’s not that I’m poor or that I need it. I’m just taking it from you because I don’t want you to feel embarrassed. So what do you want? What can I do to help you save your client tomorrow?” The security man said. His voice has softened as soon as the money touched his hand.
“I want to see your CCTV recording for July 18 2019. Please, if you can copy it into this flash drive for me, I will be glad.” Barrister Uche said. Soon, the security man went to the IT staff who keeps records of CCTV footages. He was able to convince him to copy the footage of that particular date for him. Soon, he came out and handed it to Barrister Uche.
“Thank you very much.” Barrister Uche said. He dashed to the car and drove away with Julius.
“Did you get anything that could help the case?” Julius asked. He was already tensed and tired of waiting.
“Yes. I think I have the CCTV footage of what actually happened that day. We have to go home and watch it. We have to pray that this will set your wife free. This CCTV footage will show if it was your wife who killed Jerry or not.” Barrister Uche said.

Episode 3

“Why did you kill him?” The detective police office investigating Jerry’s death asks Ugomma. His eyes are red and he looks very unfriendly.

“I swear, I didn’t kill him. Yes, we had a misunderstanding, but I wasn’t the one who killed him.” Ugomma said. She was crying bitterly. Her eyes were swollen and she looked very dirty because she has spent over two weeks in police detention.

“You are lying. As a matter of fact, I did not expect you to admit that you killed him.” The police man said.

“I could not have killed him. He was my friend.” Ugomma said.

“Who killed him then? The two of you were the only persons in the gym that evening. If you didn’t kill him, who did it? Or you want to blame the devil?” The police man asked. His voice was sounding very loud and he was hitting his hand hard on the table as he was interrogating Ugomma. If she was a man, he would have probably started slapping her.

“I said I didn’t kill him. How could I have killed my friend?” Ugomma insisted. His tears were enough to full a big bucket. Her nose was dripping with mucus.

“You are lying. You will go to jail for this murder. You will be charged to court tomorrow and there will be no mercies for you until you tell me the truth. So for the last time I ask you Ugomma, why did you kill Jerry? What did he do to you?” The policeman asked again.

“I said I killed no one. His girlfriend killed him. She was the one who hit him with the dumbbell. I was fighting with her, and she wanted to hit me with the dumbbell but it instead hit Jerry and he died. How was that supposed to be my fault?” Ugomma said. She too has started shouting out of anger and frustrations. She was telling the truth but no one was ready to hear her out or to believe what she was saying.

“The truth is coming out gradually. The day Jerry died, it was only the two of you that were in that gym. How do you want me to believe his girlfriend was responsible for his death? You killed him and you want to put the blame on his girlfriend. If his girlfriend was there, how come we never saw her when we came to the gym?” The policeman kept pressing on. He was playing on Ugomma’s mind and trying to get her to confess what she did not do. She refused to give up or confess a crime she did not commit.

“Mr officer, say whatever you want. Kill me if you want, but I did not kill Jerry. His girlfriend killed him and escaped before your arrival.” Ugomma said. Tears continued to pour from her eyes. She felt so bitter. For the two weeks that she has spent at the police detention, no one has come to see her. She has wallowed in mental loneliness.

“We shall see in court. Get ready to be sentenced to death since you don’t want to say they truth. When we get to court, there shall be no mercy. Get ready for death sentence because the judge won’t show you mercy, except you agree to confess to me that you killed Jerry.” The policeman played his last card before leaving the interrogation room but Ugomma refused to implicate herself by confessing what she did not do. She was taken back to the police cell.

Ugomma shared the cell with another lady named Dimma. Dimma was brought to the station because she stabbed her husband to death. She and Ugomma had become friends. When Ugomma returned to the cell, Dimma asked her how her interrogation went.

“How did it go?” Dimma asked.

“It was horrible. They were forcing me to say what I did not do. I didn’t kill him.” Ugomma told Dimma. She broke into tears again and leaned on Dimma’s shoulder. Dimma robbed her back as if she was her daughter.

“I’m sorry dear. I believe you. You did not do it. Don’t worry, you will get out of this place. You are not going to jail.” Dimma said. She was trying to say things that would make Ugomma feel better.

“Thank you so much Dimma. I’m so happy someone even believes me. I don’t know how I found myself in this mess.” Ugomma said.

“When I went for my own interrogation, I did not waist time to confess because I did it. I killed my husband. But for you, I know you are innocent the moment I saw you.” Dimma said. She had no remorse.

“So why did you kill him?” Ugomma asked after she recovered a bit from her sorrow.

“He is a wife be**er and I have endured him for too long. I decided to end his life before he ends mine. I know I’m going to jail, but it feels satisfying.” Dimma said.

“It is wrong to have killed him.” Ugomma said.

“I know, but it is also wrong to beat me as his wife.” Dimma defended herself.

“By the way, what about your ex-husband? Why not call him and ask for help? He might help you and hire a lawyer to defend you in court from tomorrow.” Dimma advised. They were now sitting on the cold floor of the cell.

“I don’t think I can do that. I better go to jail than ask his help.” Ugomma said. She had no help from anywhere else. She knows her ex-husband would be her only hope of getting a lawyer and being set free from detention, but she did not want to admit she needs his help.

“Common! Swallow your pride and call him and ask for help. You will need him because you are innocent. You can’t pay for a sin you did not commit. When my sister comes to see me later, I will smuggle in her phone so you can use it and call your husband.” Dimma said.

“I don’t know if he would agree to come. I feel ashamed because of what happened. I was sleeping with Jerry before he died because I got into a fight with his girlfriend. I don’t know how I will tell that to my ex-husband. He will laugh at me because I was the one who divorced him. It feels shameful going back to ask his help.” Ugomma started weeping again.

“There is nothing shameful in asking for help. You need help and I insist you should make that call. You didn’t kill Jerry and you need a lawyer to help you prove that.” Dimma said.

Ugomma did not completely agree to the idea out of shame but when the phone arrived, she had no option than to dial Julius’ number.

“Hello. Who is this please.” Julius asked.

“This is Ugomma….” Ugomma was still trying to talk and explain herself when Julius interrupted her.

“Oh my God! Where have you been? I have been looking for you all over the town. Your number has been switched off. I miss you so much my love. I have not being myself since you left my house. Please forgive me for how I treated you. I’m so sorry. Where are you right now. Just tell me your location and I will come and pick you up immediately.” Julius said. He sounded so calm and smooth that Ugomma began to wonder if he was the same man she used to know.

“Hello, is this Julius? I mean Julius my ex-husband? Are you sure you are not his driver?” Ugomma asked.

“This is Julius. It’s me Ugomma. I know you are surprised but I have realized my mistake. I should never have let you leave my house. It took your absence for me to realize how much you meant to me. Please, tell me where you are.” Julius said.

“I’m at Aligwodo police station. I have been arrested for murder. They say I killed someone.” Ugomma said.

“Say no more. I’m coming there with a lawyer. I know you are innocent. You didn’t kill anyone. You are not a killer.” Julius said. He dropped the call and placed another call to his lawyer. Within two hours, they arrived the police station.

The Gym House

Episode 2

“I want a divorce.” Ugomma tells her husband Julius. It is now five months since she started going out with Jerry and she feels comfortable enough to end her marriage because of him. Her husband has become worse in terms of verbal and emotional abuse but she no longer cares. She finds emotional fulfillment in her ‘relationship’ with Jerry. She decided to serve him divorce papers after he slapped her and almost made her blind in the left eye.

“I have been waiting for this. I did not want to be the one to serve you a divorce paper. Thank you so much for this move. To be honest Ugomma, I don’t love you. You are a good woman, but as soon as we got married, I realized I made a big mistake. I’m not physically attracted to you. Thank you for freeing me from this emotional bo***ge. I wish you well in your future relationship. I wish you will find a man that would love because I’m not that man.” Julius said. Ugomma was surprised at what her husband said.

Julius quickly signed the papers and handed them to Ugnomma.

“So you never loved me all these while?” Ugomma asked.

“No! I sincerely don’t love you. The love I have for you is not enough to sustain a marriage. I thought I loved you when we met, but when we started living together, I realized my heart is not with you. This is why I treat you in a bad way. I have always secretly wished that you should divorce me so that I can find love elsewhere and be emotionally free. I’m happy you did this.” Julius said as he moved away from the scene.

Ugomma was so heartbroken. She thought her husband would beg her not to divorce him, but the reverse was the case as Julius was rather very pleased. She quietly parked her things and moved out of the compound, and vowed never to come back. Julius did not try to hold her back and that was painful.

“So, I was wasting my time all these while? So, I have been waiting for a ship at the airport? I feel so terrible right now.” Ugomma said as she closes the gate behind her.

Already, she has rented an apartment before going to serve Julius the divorce papers. She boarded a taxi and went straight to the apartment and effectively moved in.

“Now this is my house, my apartment, my space. I feel finally free from oppression. I’m so happy.” Ugomma said as she fell on her big sofa in the living room. She felt like a caged bird that has just been released. She lay on the sofa and slept for a very long time. She had never felt that peaceful in the past. She was truly happy.

When she woke up from sleep, she went to the kitchen and made food for herself and ate her fill. She took her bath, dressed up and went to the gym. She got to the gym house around 4:30 pm.

The main door to the gym house was partially closed. Ugomma pushed it and what she saw shocked her. She saw Jerry holding a young girl and they were about to make love when Ugomma just walked in.

“Who is this?” Ugomma asked. She was so shocked that her voice was trembling. Jerry and the girl he was kissing have let go of each other. The girl was surprised when Ugomma asked to know who she was.

“I should be the one asking who you are. Why are you here? Why are you interrupting me and my boyfriend?” The girl asked. Her name is Adanna, Jerry’s girlfriend.

Ugomman and Adanna were just about to start fighting when Jerry intervened.

“Calm down everyone. There is no need to fight.” Jerry said. He took charge of the situation but Ugomma and Adanna were still boiling.

“Ugomma, this is Adanna, my girlfriend and fiancée. Adanna, this is Ugomma, my client.” Jerry said. Ugomma was shocked that Jerry referred to her as just his client and nothing more.

“What did you just say?” Ugomma asked Jerry.

“I said you are my client. Or were we dating? I never asked you out remember. I never said I love you. I was just providing services to you. The emotional services I provided to you were part of what you paid for in the gym. I was helping you to heal from your abusive husband. You were enjoying what you paid for. I was never emotionally attached to you. I have a girlfriend and I love her so much.” Jerry said. His words so much broke Ugomma’s heart. She felt so terrible.

“Did you hear what he said? Now, leave this gym house.” Adanna said. Her morale was lifted when Jerry declared that she was the authentic girlfriend and fiancée. But as she was talking, Ugomma landed her a hot slap. They started exchanging blows.

When Jerry attempted to separate the two women and stop them from fighting, Adanna lifted one dumbbell and landed it on Jerry’s head. He slumped and kicked the bucket instantly. She intended to hit Ugomma with the dumbbell, but she dodged it and it landed on Jerry.

Adanna ran out of the gym house. She removed her phone and called the police telling them Ugomma had killed someone at the gym. Before Ugomma could recover from the shock of what happened, the police came into the gym house and arrested her.

“You are under arrest for murder. You have to come with us to the station.” The police said.
