Now, Youโve seen the perfect job on Upwork, youโre excited, you open your laptop, ready to apply.
Then you freeze. "What do I even write in this proposal?!" You start typingโฆ deleteโฆ type againโฆ delete. Before you know it, an hour has passed and youโre still staring at your laptop. Sound familiar? ๐
In Nigeria, weโd say, โYou no sabi pass the exam, but you dey write epistle!โ
A good proposal is not about writing a novel or telling the client your life story. Nah! Itโs about being sharp, straight to the point, and showing that you know exactly how to solve their problem. Let me break it down for you:
1. Grab Their Attention in the First Line
The first line of your proposal is your entry gate, if itโs boring, the client moves on. It's like waka passing in a busy market. You need to stand out! Instead of saying, โHi, my name is Inemesit and I have 5 years of experienceโฆโ try something like, โI see youโre looking for a graphic designer who can create bold, creative logos, thatโs exactly my specialty!โ
Boom! Youโve grabbed their attention.
2. . Be Solution-Oriented
Clients on Upwork donโt really care about how many awards youโve won or how long your CV is. They just want to know one thing: Can you solve my problem? So, if youโve found a job post, take a good look at what theyโre asking for. Address their pain points directly. โYou need someone who can deliver a clean, professional website in 2 weeks? Hereโs how Iโll make that happen.โ Simple, straight to the point, and super effective.
3. Use Naija Confidence, But Not Too Much!
You know how in Naija we love to pepper our talk with confidence? That can work in your favour, but donโt overdo it. A confident but humble tone shows that youโre sure of your skills, but youโre still approachable. Avoid things like, โIโm the best youโll ever find!โ (Abeg, calm down! ๐). Instead, go with something like, โIโve worked on similar projects, and Iโm confident I can exceed your expectations.โ
4. . Keep It Short and Sweet
Nobody has time to read a proposal thatโs longer than a Nollywood script. Keep it concise! A good Upwork proposal is about 150-200 words. Hit the major points: your understanding of their job, your solution, and why youโre the best choice. Donโt stress them with too much plenty talk.
5. End with a Call-to-Action
Your last line should make them want to hit that reply button. Something simple like, โIโm excited to work on this project with you. Let me know when youโre available for a quick chat!โ gets the ball rolling.
Bonus Tip: donโt just sit back and wait. Follow up! Sometimes clients get busy or your proposal might get lost with lots of applications. A simple, polite follow-up message can put your proposal back in their sights.
At the end of the day, writing Upwork proposals is about showing up with confidence, clarity, and a plan. Stop overthinking it, your success is closer than you think, just one good proposal away!
