As a social media manager passionate about helping others, someone in my niche reached out to me after viewing my iportfolio.
He was struggling with some basics, and I willingly helped him outâwithout charging a dime.
I shared step-by-step strategies on making posts go viral, retaining clients, and running effective ad campaigns. He applied them, got results, and even came back with more questions. I was glad to help again.
He came the second time I helped him, and then I became curious as to how someone who does not know the basics of what heâs doing had so much clients đł.
Curious, I asked him a simple question: âplease How do you get your clients? Do you use ads or freelancing platforms?â
He ignored it. Twice.
Yet, he returned shortly after with another problem, asking for my help again, I gave him some tips, then I assumed he skipped the message so I resent it.
He ignored again and replied with a question.
This time, I politely told him I didnât know the answerâeven though I did.
Hereâs the thing: If youâre going to hoard knowledge, donât expect others to give theirs freely. Relationships built on one-sided exchanges never thrive.
Iâm a firm believer that sharing knowledge is powerful. When we uplift others, we create a ripple effect that benefits everyone.
But if youâre the type to take and never give back, you might find yourself losing access to valuable connections.
To my fellow professionals:â¨đĄ Share what you knowâit doesnât dim your light; it makes the room brighter.â¨đĄ Respect othersâ time and effort. Knowledge is valuable, and no one owes you free advice.â¨đĄ Build relationships based on mutual value, not one-sided transactions.
P.s: If youâve ever encountered people who take and never give back, let me know in the comments.
And if youâre a giver like me, remember this: not everyone deserves unlimited access to your expertise.
Letâs normalize balanced and respectful professional relationships
