A Twitter user with the username โ€˜โ€™, has described the last moments before the death of Vwaere Diaso, a medical doctor at Lagos Island General Hospital, Odan.

Diaso had died, on Tuesday, after an elevator she was in at the general hospital, fell from the 10th floor.

The deceased was said to have been on her way to the ground floor to pick up a food delivery from a dispatch rider when the incident happened.

Moye, who also works at the hospital, said she was standing in front of the elevator and pressed the open button, but didnโ€™t enter because she was on a video call.

She said it wasnโ€™t long after that she heard a big crash to the floor, which made the dispatch rider, who brought food for Diaso, run out of the building.

The doctor said someone then raised the alarm that Vwaere was in the elevator, adding that they immediately began seeking help to bring her out of the elevator.

โ€œThey tried to use rods to open it, to be sure it wasnโ€™t a joke. They finally opened it and the sight was gruesome. Muffled sounds of excruciating pain and agony became apparent,โ€ she wrote.

โ€œHer forehead had a horizontal cut, her mouth had another one and she had raccoon eyes. She was lying in between the base of the elevator and the ground floor, with the engine hanging over her head, which meant any miscalculation in movement, sheโ€™ll be crushed to instant death.

โ€œShe was literally sandwiched in between the hanging engine and below the ground floor with blood on broken glasses and fractured limbs. Itโ€™s not a sight to describe.โ€

Help came after 40 minutes

โ€œI remember telling her to relax that help was coming,โ€ she said, โ€˜Donโ€™t tell me to relax, tell them to get me out of hereโ€™. We eventually got her out and she kept saying she thinks sheโ€™ll die,โ€ she wrote.

โ€œEmergency care was almost zero and inside a hospital for that matter. There was no blood in the hospital.โ€

Sanwo-Olu vows thorough investigation, condoles with victimโ€™s family

Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has vowed to thoroughly investigate the tragic death of a medical doctor, Vwaere Diaso, who lost her life due to a mechanical failure within the elevator at the Doctorsโ€™ quarters of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.

Sanwo-Olu, who described the death of Diaso as devastating, empathised with the deceased family.
โ€œIn light of this tragedy, I have taken immediate action to initiate a thorough investigation into the cause of the mechanical failure.

โ€œIt is my sincere commitment that this investigation will be conducted with utmost transparencyโ€œand fairness, leaving no room for any biases or favouritism.

โ€œI was deeply saddened to hear about the tragic loss of Dr Vwaere Diaso, a dedicatedโ€œmedical professional whose life was taken due to a mechanical failure within the elevator atโ€œthe Doctorโ€™s quarters of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.

โ€œIt is distressing to think that such a promising young doctor had her life cut short in such a devastating manner.

โ€œAs a parent myself, I cannot help but feel the pain and sorrow that Dr. Diasoโ€™s loved ones must be experiencing during this difficult time. My heart goes out to her parents, family members, friends, and colleagues who are grieving this profound loss.โ€ the governor said.

He also sympathised with the Medical Guild, the Nigeria Medical Association, the Medical Guild, and all doctors in Lagos State.

โ€œI extend my deepest sympathies. Losing a fellow a healthcare professional is a tremendous loss for the entire medical community.โ€ he said.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party have berated the ruling All Progressives Congress for appointing former governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, as the new National Chairman of the ruling party, saying the 73-year-old politician has corruption baggage hanging around his neck.

However, Ganduje, who emerged APC National Chairman on Thursday at the partyโ€™s National Executive Committee in Abuja, promised to promote unity among party members, carry out reforms and adhere to internal democracy under his watch.

At the APC NEC meeting, attended by President Bola Tinubu, a former Senate spokesman, Senator Ajibola Basiru, was also appointed as the APC National Secretary.

In his welcome address, Tinubu defended the legitimacy of the presidential poll.

He said, โ€œSome people baited us but we honoured their wishes and yet coasted to victory. Yes, we are facing challenges in court and I say this is one of the freest and fairest election in the history of Nigeria. As a democrat, those who cannot accept the result of a free and fair election, do not deserve the joy of victory.

โ€˜โ€™We have worked hard, and we have received the trophy. Winning an election is the first part of the process. What is next is good governance and quality service delivery. We must promote unity, peace, and love among all organs of the party.โ€

โ€˜โ€™You are the makers and drivers of the party. When we have all passengers inside the bus, the driver must not fall asleep. The brake must also work well. Party loyalty must exist.โ€

On the main agenda of the NEC meeting, which appointed new external auditors to audit party accounts and fill the vacant offices of National Chairman and National Secretary, Tinubu urged the NEC to devolve some of its powers to the National Working Committee of the party to also fill other vacancies in the party.

The request was a sequel to a motion moved by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and seconded by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who doubles as the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.

In his acceptance speech, Ganduje pledged that โ€œUnder my watch, internal democracy will be strictly adhered to with a deliberate policy to engage in wider consultations and making the party functional throughout the year.

โ€œMore reforms will be carried out in the party in alignment with the current political landscape. Our main focus will be promoting party unity and defending and increasing the number of executive and legislative seats we currently hold.โ€

He added that โ€œWe will ensure a level playing field for all party members that want to contest elections under the partyโ€™s platform. Our primary elections would be free, transparent and fair.โ€

Ganduje said all hands must be on deck to ensure victory for the APC in the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states.

Reacting to Gandujeโ€™s emergence as APC National Chairman, the opposition PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the APC had confirmed itself as a โ€œcesspit of corruption and a haven for thieves, bribe takers and treasury looters.โ€

โ€œBy appointing Ganduje, notoriously referred to as โ€˜Gandollarโ€™ by Nigerians over the infamous video of him barefacedly stuffing his gown with US dollar notes as bribe allegedly from a contractor, while serving as Governor of Kano State, further validates that the APC is a putrid party of embezzlers and charlatans.

โ€œIt also underscores APCโ€™s impunity and insensitivity to the demands of honesty, integrity and moral rectitude required of public office holders. The PDP invites Nigerians to note that only last month, a forensic analysis by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission confirmed that the content of the 2017 โ€˜Gandollarโ€™ viral video was not doctored,โ€ the PDP said.

Similarly, the chief spokesman for Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Yunusa Tanko, expressed disappointment, saying the appointment of Ganduje was clear proof that the APC lacked any toga of credibility.

Tanko said, โ€œWhen you have somebody who has a lot of credibility issues hanging on his neck, what good will he bring? In fact, as we speak today, Ganduje is almost being chased out of Kano because of the atrocities he committed in the state. I am from Kano. Is this the same person the APC is making its own national chairman? Come on, they can do better.

โ€œThat means the entire party lacks credibility. That is what it shows. There is no ingenuity in him.โ€

The United States Agency for International Development has warned Nigeria and other African countries to brace up for higher food prices, following recent developments that have temporarily halted Ukraineโ€™s food exports to African countries.

USAIDโ€™s Deputy Administrator for Policy and Programming, Isobel Coleman, said this on Thursday at a virtual press conference.

According to her, Russiaโ€™s decision to withdraw from the Black Sea Grain Initiative had already begun to trigger higher food prices around the world.

She noted the impact of this food price hike would be more felt in developing countries that were import-dependent, and had conventionally relied on grain imports from Ukraine.

Coleman said, โ€œOne of the worldโ€™s largest breadbaskets is Ukraine. By doing this, Russia is increasing food prices globally. Weโ€™ve already seen how global food prices came down over time after the Black Sea Grain Initiative came into place. Since Russia has pulled out of the agreement, food prices have again been on the rise.

โ€œThis affects every country around the world, but it affects, most acutely, large import-dependent developing countries that have to spend much of their precious foreign exchange resources to purchase food to feed their population.โ€

The Black Sea Grain Initiative was conceived to specifically allow for commercial food and fertiliser (including ammonia) exports from three key Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea, which are Odessa, Chornomorsk, Yuzhny/Pivdennyi.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, led to a complete halt of maritime grain shipments from Ukraine, previously a major exporter via the Black Sea. Additionally, Russia temporarily halted its grain exports, further exacerbating the situation.

This resulted in a rise in world food prices and the threat of famine in lower-income countries such as Nigeria, and accusation that Russia was weaponising food supplies.

To address the issue, discussions began in April 2022, hosted by Turkey (which controls the maritime routes from the Black Sea) and supported by the UN. The resulting agreement was signed in Istanbul in July 22, valid for a period of 120 days.

With ratification of the initiative, food prices which had increased significantly, began to decrease. However, on July 17, 2023, the deal expired, and Russia refused to renew it on the ground that global sanctions were blocking its agricultural exports.

According to Coleman, Russiaโ€™s withdrawal from the initiative, which in principle, prevented Ukraine from exporting grain to Nigeria and other developing countries, would have dire consequences of food security in these countries.

Through the initiative, she said, Ukraine was able to export 33 million metric tonnes of food, 65 per cent of which went to developing countries, while 20 per cent went to the least developed countries.

According to a report by United Nations Comtrade, Nigeria imported about $500m worth of grain from Ukraine in 2021; showing the termination of the Black Sea Grain Initiative inevitably spelt higher food prices.

Russia, on its part, had promised to fill the space arising from Ukraineโ€™s inability to export its grain, but USAID remained adamant that the Kremlin, which was trying to capitalise on a crisis it had engineered, was not equipped to fill this void, nor should it be allowed to.

Speaking further, Coleman said, USAID was already making plans to explore alternative means through which Ukraine could export its grain without the current hindrances surrounding the conventional maritime route (Black Sea).

She also noted that in the wake of the last food crisis which rocked global food security, the US government had made substantial investments via its โ€˜Feed The Futureโ€™ campaign, to make developing countries more resilient to food crises.

She added, โ€œWe have invested in more than 40 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Carribean. We have 20 target countries that have high levels of poverty and hunger and also a strong potential to drive economic growth and transform food systems.โ€

The Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia, Elizabeth McKee, who also spoke, described the situation as dire, especially in light of Russiaโ€™s announcement that henceforth, any ship heading towards Ukrainian ports would be viewed as military targets.

According to her, in the last nine days, 26 port facilities and infrastructure had been hit by the Russians, while five civilian vessels had been targetted, and 180,000 tonnes of precious grain crops destroyed.

Barely 24 hours after meeting with President Bola Tinubu where an agreement was reached to call off their protests, the rapprochement between the organised labour and the Federal Government appeared to have collapsed as the unions on Thursday night vowed to embark on a nationwide strike from August 14 if their leaders were summoned for contempt of court orders.

The Nigeria Labour Congress hinged its decision on the contempt of court application filed by the Federal Ministry of Justice against the labour leaders on Wednesday.

It threatened to down tools should the Federal Government fails to withdraw the lawsuit accusing the labour leadership of disobeying court orders.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, announced the decision on Thursday night after the unionโ€™s National Executive Council meeting which was held in Abuja.

In a bid to avert a strike by the labour movement last month, the FG had through the Federal Ministry of Justice secured an order from the National Industrial Court restraining the NLC and the Trade Union Congress from embarking on any strike action over issues bordering on โ€œremoval of fuel subsidy, hike in prices of petrol and consequential increase in cost of living,โ€ pending the determination of the suit.

The Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jedy-Agba, in a statement, urged the NLC to withdraw the seven-day notice it issued on its plan to commence a nationwide industrial action from August 2, if the demands of labour unions were not met.

The justice ministry sternly warned in a statement on July 26 that the planned strike by the union would be contempt of court, an offence that is punishable by imprisonment.

According to the FG, such strike action would amount to a resort to self-help since the matter was already pending in court.

But dissatisfied by the slow negotiation process with the FG and the delay in rolling out palliative to cushion the pains of subsidy removal, the organised labour declared a nationwide protest despite the court injunction.

Lagos lawyer and solicitor to the organised labour, Femi Falana, SAN, however, insisted that the proposed protest was lawful.

As a result, the protests, which were held on Wednesday, paralysed economic and commercial activities nationwide, leading to the shutdown of banks, offices and courts in several states.

As a payback for the labour leadersโ€™ defiance, the Federal Government on Wednesday initiated a contempt of court proceeding against the labour leaders, a development that angered the unions.

The โ€œnotice of consequences of disobedience to order of the courtโ€, titled โ€œForm 48,โ€ was filed before the National Industrial Court, Abuja.

The applicants are the Federal Government and the Attorney General of the Federation, while the various leaders of the organised labour were listed as respondents.

The notice was addressed to the NLC President, Joe Ajaero; Deputy Presidents, Audu Aruba, Adeyanju Adewale, and Kabiru Sani; General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja; TUC President, Festus Usifo, and General Secretary, Nuhu Toro.

โ€œTake notice that unless you obey the directives contained in the Order of the National Industrial Court, Abuja, delivered by Honourable Justice Y. Anuwe on June 5th 2023, as per the attached Enrolled Order, you will be guilty of Contempt of Court and will be liable to be sentenced to prison,โ€™โ€™ the contempt notice signed by Senior Registrar, Balogun Olajide, read.

Responding to the charge, the NLC President, in a statement on Thursday said the Ministry of Justice and National Industrial Court have continued to โ€˜โ€™allow themselves to be used as agents of anti-democracy.โ€

The labour centre noted that though it agreed to suspend its protests based on its meeting with the President, it would embark on a nationwide strike starting from August 14, 2023, should the government fail to withdraw the lawsuit filed against the labour leaders.

Highlighting the decisions of the NLC, Ajaero said the NEC resolved to support and affirm the decision to suspend further nationwide mass protest and to commit to maintaining the required vigilance needed to hold the government accountable for its assurances and governance in general.

The union further resolved to commit to the terminal date of August 19 within which the issues around the petroleum price hike would be agreed given the assurances of the President and the National Assembly.

The statement added that the NLC resolved โ€œTo go on total strike across the country any day labour leaders are summoned to court by the government through the NICN 5; To demand the immediate withdrawal of this litigious terrorism by the Federal Ministry of Justice before the end of work Friday, the 11th of August, 2023; To embark on a nationwide comprehensive strike beginning Monday 14th of August, 2023 if this contemptuous court summons is not withdrawn by whosoever initiated it.โ€

The counsel to the Organised Labour, Falana, SAN, urged the President to call the permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice to order over the contempt charges filed against the organized labour.

He also noted that the NLC had in no way breached any agreement it had with the President on the suspension of the nationwide protests.

Falana who spoke in an interview with our correspondent on Thursday night explained that his client had already challenged the ex parte order obtained by the justice ministry from the National Industrial Court.

The human rights lawyer said, โ€œLabour is not in breach of any agreement. They were in a meeting with the president when a ministry official went behind to file contempt charges. That was an embarrassment.

โ€œIf the organized labour were in contempt, would the president have met with them? Would the police have marched with them? We have challenged the jurisdiction of the court, and we have challenged the competence of the ex parte order so she (Jeddy-Agba) knows she canโ€™t be talking of contempt of court until our motion challenging the jurisdiction of the court and competence of the ex parte order is taken.โ€

Yes! Thereโ€™s nothing they havenโ€™t said of Peter Obi. They have charged that he is not a god. They have said he is no more than a political opportunist. They have ridiculed his promise to change Nigeria from consumer to producer. They pooh-poohed as unfounded the statistics the man churned out on successes abroad that could be replicated back home. But the traducers wouldnโ€™t reckon with reality. The subject of their insistent lambasting never ascribed divinity to himself. He did not circle his head with sanctityโ€™s hallo. In the league of politicians, he didnโ€™t claim to be more human. He only asked for the chance to lift a comatose country.

Those who alternate between reading newspapers and staring into the skies understand that, like other humans, Peter Obi possesses a bag of foibles. All told, he sculpted in the granite of national consciousness an enduring self-definition. โ€œI am a trader,โ€ he often asserts, without the novelty ever wearing off. Well, here is a gem from the trader-politician: โ€œWho among us would lose their car and, on discovering who made away with it, allow them to keep the vehicle because it was scrupulously maintained?โ€

Any reader who would rather the illegal confiscation of his property stays unchallenged because it is forever kept tidy may discontinue reading because this article is themed on halting looters and worsting impunity.

Now, the stolen automobile and seized mansion are understated anecdotes for estopping wantonness. Here is a newspaperโ€™s May 5, 2023, story: โ€œA total of 137 persons were killed, and 57 abducted during the 2023 general elections, a report by the Incident Centre for Election Atrocities (ICEA) has shown. The report entitled: โ€œEthnic Profiling, Hate Speech, and Endemic Violence: A Preliminary Post-Election Statement on the 2023 General Elections in Nigeria,โ€ obtained by Saturday Vanguard in Abuja, said the most prominent forms of atrocities noted through the electioneering process were the weaponisation of voter suppression through violence, hate speech, fake news, and ethnic bigotry.โ€

To recraft the understated anecdotes. A princess would be betrothed to a communityโ€™s crown prince. Once the ceremony is underway, a bandit storms the public square with sword and bludgeon-wielding mercenaries. The kingโ€™s head is separated from his torso. The crown princeโ€™s bloody entrails are flung and scattered in all directions. The bandit abducts the would-be spouse. A reign of agony and bedlam ensues. A season later, the bandit returns with his abductee and their son, claiming entitlement to the communityโ€™s throne. Except inflicted by bastardy, which Nigerian community will heartily crown the murderous criminal because, straight from their violation, a bouncing baby boy was born?

This is the atrocity that impelled Peter Obi to step into the breach. And, like the tree by the footpath, what he represents is the subject of much buffeting and battering. He has been viscerally bathed in malignity and curses. One social media profaner even called him an infidel. Yet, he is neither bloodied nor bowed. Having long banished the fear of fear, he is proceeding with the breastplate of truth and the belt of righteousness. If a sane society decided on an โ€infidelโ€™sโ€ leadership, why should interlopers discountenance their democratic choice? Wasnโ€™t a similar outrage what threw up the June 12 imbroglio that almost sundered Nigeria?

Doesnโ€™t it strike as significant that a man much maligned for championing the peopleโ€™s cause has not for once served his adversaries with a dose of their own medicine? Peter Obi was a teenager when First and Second Republic politician, Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim, espoused the philosophy of Politics Without Bitterness. He is today that creedโ€™s prime exemplar. He has demonstrated an abiding faith in the ballot box as the democratic instrument for elective office. He has invariably turned to the judiciary each time the need arose to redress political waywardness. He acts in boldness, knowing that he will never walk alone.

Some theoretical formulation is apposite. The sum of Nigeriaโ€™s intractable challenges was always known. Chinua Achebe placed a finger on it. In The Trouble With Nigeria, he said: โ€œThe trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership. There is nothing wrong with the Nigerian land or climate or water or air or anything else. The Nigerian problem is the unwillingness or inability of its leaders to rise to the responsibility, to the challenge of personal example, which are the hallmarks of true leadership.โ€

Reacting to Achebeโ€™s thesis a year or so before he perished in a mystifying 1996 plane crash, Professor Claude Ake, the eminent political scientist, submitted that national failure was equally blamable on followership. If docility informed followership, he argued, there was little point in expecting or envisaging altruistic and visionary leadership.

On the surface, Achebe and Ake had argued from antipodal zones. But examined critically, their postulations are, in fact, in tandem. The confusion only rears its ugly head when leadership is seen from the opaque prism of political authority. Except impliedly, Achebe didnโ€™t blame Nigeriaโ€™s trouble on political leadership per se. And when Ake lanced followership, he didnโ€™t articulate a chasm in the bonds of responsibilities devolving on the leader and the led. Therefore, it boils down to this: Leadership cannot be sentenced to the political and the apicular. Of course, leadership is pyramidal. But it exists and thrives at the levels of political distinction, economic potentialities, geographic demarcations, religious stratification, domestic particularities, etc.

In effect, a school principal is, in comparison, a follower of the education minister. But inside his college, the principal is the leader. A carpenter on a building site follows a foreman. But back home, where he is the breadwinner, his leadership position ought not to be in doubt. The class prefect and her classmates are subject to the headmasterโ€™s authority. Yet, she leads her cohorts. It is in this classification of diverse and varying leadership levels that the postulations of Professors Achebe and Ake should be inserted. This, then, is the critical question: What is the quality of your leadership at your own level?

Thatโ€™s the juncture at which the Obidient Movement manifests because it represents an uncompromising affirmation of political morality that abjures class, ethnic, or religious parochialism. Obidients show leadership at whatever level circumstances place them. In apt apprehension of their civic responsibilities, they not only participated in voter registration but also encouraged broad swathes of the population to follow suit. They disdained violence. On election days, they trooped out to vote, even in the face of harassment, intimidation, violence, and INECโ€™s perversity.

When election results were called that raised eyebrows, they disdained the template for โ€œthe dog and the baboon (to) all be soaked in blood.โ€ They hearkened to the invitation to โ€œgo to court.โ€ That is the new Nigeria. Such is the nature of life that the man after whom Nigeriaโ€™s redemptive movement took a name is not the issue. Had Peter Obi gone into the presidential ballot flying other than the Labour Party flag, it is unlikely that the movement now symbolically coalesced around his personality would have come to be.

A 32-year-old man, Samson Sikiru, said to be a drug addict, on Sunday, allegedly strangulated his mother to death, in Itanrin, in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The suspectโ€™s younger brother, who is a night guard, raised the alarm after he returned from night duty and discovered that his mother had been killed.

It was learned that Samson was arrested when neighbours discovered that he was behind the death of his mother and, subsequently, handed him over to the police.

A source explained that the suspect had been a known drug addict, saying he had fled home five years ago before he returned recently.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun, Omotola Odutola, said the command was aware of the incident.

According to Odutola, the suspect is currently a neuropsychiatric patient.
The PPRO explained that family members occasionally tied down Samson with ropes to prevent him from injuring himself or anyone.

โ€œHe had remained with his mother, whom he visited during Sallah celebrations, even though he is known for his re**rd tendency, but his condition was being managed to the best of the knowledge of his mother.

โ€œIt is not yet clear if there was any provocation by his mother, but, preliminary investigation revealed that earlier same day, he was tied up in the house, only for him to loose himself and descended on his mother and strangled her,โ€ she narrated.

Odutola said marks of violence were found around the deceased neck, including lacerations discovered around her right legs, saying this proved there was force or violence.

โ€œSamson Sikiru is still in the police custody, but, nothing much has been gotten from him, as he has not answered any coherent questions put across to him,โ€ she added.
