Rep. Onuigbo Tasks Christians with the Cardinal Lessons of Christ's Life

Member representing the South East on the Governing Board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Rep. Sam Onuigbo, has called on Christians to embrace the cardinal lessons from the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, in their everyday lives. Onuigbo made this call in an Easter message released on Easter Sunday, 31st March, 2024.

The former National Lawmaker stated that the story of the death and resurrection of Christ is replete with the lessons of unconditional love, compassion, forgiveness, perseverance, obedience, and dedication to duty as shown by Christ.

Citing from the Book of Luke 22:49-51, Onuigbo pointed out that nothing best exemplifies Christ's willingness to forgive even those who wronged Him than the restoration of the ear of one of the servants of the Chief Priest who had come to arrest Him. Christ would further display His sense of duty, perseverance and determination to be sacrificial for those whom he loves unconditionally, by going ahead with His death and resurrection even though the human part of Him was scared at the end.

He therefore charged Christians to remember these cardinal lessons of Christ's journey and consequently attempt to live the Christlike life as the society will immensely benefit from this and the world better for it.

UPDATED: Omehia Not A Former Governor, Court Rules

Justice Kip of the High Court of the Rivers division on Tuesday ruled that Celestine Omehia is not a former governor of the state and thus not entitled to pension in that stead.

He also ruled that the defendants cannot demand a refund of N694m as pension and fringe benefits and that the court cannot depart from the Supreme Court judgment in the case of Rotimi Amaechi vs INEC and two others.

After the tenure of Peter Odili expired, Celestine Omehia was elected and sworn in as governor of Rivers State on May 29, 2007.

Rotimi Amaechi headed to court to challenge the primaries that brought in Omehia.

After a legal battle, the court ruled that Amaechi was the validly elected candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

During the tenure of Nyesom Wike as governor of the House of Assembly, he enacted a law recognizing Omehia as governor.

In 2023, however, the governor withdrew the recognition accorded to Omehia and demanded that he refund all pensions earned.

Omehia approached the court, demanding that he be recognized as a former governor of the state.

UPDATED: CBN Raises Interest Rate To 24.75 Percent

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has hiked the benchmark interest rate by 200 basis points to 24.75 percent.

This is according to a Tuesday communique by the CBN governor Yemi Cardoso after the second MPC meeting of his tenure in Abuja.

The new interest rate is a jump from the 22.75 percent announced by the MPC about a month ago and the second rate hike by the current committee.

Cardoso announced the retention of the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) of deposit money banks at 45 percent. However, the MPC adjusted the CRR of merchant banks from 10 percent to 14 percent.

The committee also retained the liquidity ratio at 30 percent.

The considerations of the committee at this meeting focused on the current inflationary pressures and the need to anchor inflation expectations as well as ensure sustained exchange stability,” the CBN chief said.

He said the moves are part of efforts to combat the country’s rising inflationary rate which was pegged at 31.70 percent in February.

Cardoso noted that MPC members believe the headline inflation in the country is triggered mostly by a hike in the cost of food.

“The committee therefore was of the view that addressing food insecurity is key to containing the current inflationary pressures,” he said while commending the Federal Government’s efforts at curbing food insecurity including the distribution of palliatives.

Tuesday’s MPC decision came amid the Nigerian authorities’ clampdown on cryptocurrency platform Binance.

Some Binance executives were detained in the country but one of them recently escaped from custody.

But while providing an update about Nigeria’s clampdown on the crypto platform, he said the CBN’s collaboration with other government agencies is yielding results.

“We consider ourselves as having the wherewithal to collaborate with other agencies of government and that is a very important function for us. About a month ago, we actually did have collaboration with law enforcement agencies, EFCC, the SEC, and other regulatory bodies as well, and what came out of that, is a work in progress, but very positive as far as I can say,” he said.

“The NSA, we’ve been sharing information together. However, in this particular case, the responsibility for regulating cryptocurrency is not our role, it isn’t ours; it is strictly that of the Security and Exchange Commission, not our responsibility.”

I’ll defeat political harlots’ – Wike boasts in Rivers.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has said he will continue to defeat political harlots in Rivers State.

Wike spoke in Port Harcourt during a special Thanksgiving organized by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, to mark his birthday and his new position in the National Assembly.

Wike recalled that Chinda would have been his successor in 2023 because he was one of the best but he came under pressure.

According to Wike: “Pressure came on me at a time when we wanted someone who would succeed me. One of the very best I would have presented would have been Kingsley Chinda, not those Ikwerre people who were running around saying they wanted to be governor, that they could not serve a master and boy.

But they are waiting on the road now to serve the boy. No real Ikwerre man says that and goes back. Chinda had told you not to bother yourself. In Ikwerre tradition, when you start beating the drum of wrestling, it is not at that time that the real wrestlers will come out.

The real wrestlers will come in later, towards the end. Leave all these people who cannot stand ordinary hunger. Leave these political harlots; I will continue to defeat them. What you know, you know.”

LP crisis: Peter Obi, Obidients dump Abure, as search for new chairman begins

The crisis rocking the Labour Party, LP, took a dangerous dimension last week, with members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, picketing the party’s national secretariat and some of its state offices.

There are also indications that the presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi and his supporters known as Obidients have abandoned the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure to his fate.

This is not unconnected to the internal crisis that has been rocking the party structure since the 2023 general elections were concluded.

After a series of legal battles with the factional chairman of the party, Lamidi Apapa, Abure has been in the news over alleged financial impropriety and other disturbing issues.

Peter Obi in February 2024, called for a thorough and forensic investigation into an embezzlement allegation level against the party’s chairman, Abure.

The call by the former Anambra Governor was in response to allegations earlier made by Oluchi Oparah, the national treasurer of the party, accusing Abure of allegedly misappropriating N3.5 billion.

Oparah also alleged that the Abure-led National Working Committee, NWC, was working hand-in-hand with the Edo State Government and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ahead of the September 2024 governorship polls.

Similarly, in a letter signed by Comrades Titus Amba and Chris Uyot, the chairman and the secretary of the NLC Political Commission, the party expressed concerns over recurrent scandals and pending cases of fraud.

Abure was recently accused by some stakeholders of the party, including the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, of running the LP as a “sole administrator.”

The Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, Dr. Theophilus Ndubuaku, who spoke when the workers occupied the Labour Party headquarters in Abuja recently, said the decision to picket the party’s headquarters was taken to express workers’ grievances against Abure’s style of leadership.

He said,” Now, it is in the hands of this usurper, he is looking for N30 million, N40 million, and so on to buy forms, excluding the people who founded the party. Enough is enough, Abure must go,” said the acting General Secretary of NLC, Comrade Bello Ismail on the cost of governorship interest and nomination forms.

Similarly, in a letter issued by Comrades Titus Amba and Chris Uyot, the chairman and secretary of the NLC Political Commission, respectively, the union also knocked Abure for not being committed to the ideology of the Labour Party.

The embattled LP Chairman was in the news recently again over his alleged plan to hold National Conversation without due process.

The Abure-led National Working Committee, NWC, was accused of planning to hold the national convention of the party in Umuahia, Abia State capital on March 27.

The planned convention was captured in a notice issued to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on March 13.

The move was, however, rejected by critical stakeholders, such as the House of Reps Caucus and the NLC, leading to the recent picketing of the party’s secretariat last week.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission – the political wing of the NLC, had in an open letter dated March 15, condemned the planned convention.

While demanding the immediate resignation of Abure, the commission described the plan as illegal, noting that it would not allow any form of illegality in the affairs of the party to stand.

On Saturday on condition of anonymity alleged that Abure’s intention was to impose leadership on the party.

He said major stakeholders in that party were against the March convention, stressing that the party needs more time to select its leaders.

“Everybody in the party including our leader, Peter Obi is tired of Abure’s leadership. If we are not in court today, we will be in the news for one allegation or the other.

The time we need to use to prepare for elections like the ones coming up in Edo and Ondo is used in settling disputes.

“Abure knows that everyone wants him out and the next thing he wants to do to remain relevant in the party is to impose a chairman on the party.

How can you be talking about conventions and stakeholders of the same party are not even aware? The Labour Party is not Abure’s personal company”, he said.

The former Deputy National Campaign Manager to Peter Obi/Dati Presidential Campaign, Comrade Isaac Balami from the Northern region may take over from Abure.

Some party leaders and chieftains have had a meeting and suggested Belami as the next National Chairman of the party.

When contacted, Balami told our correspondent on the phone that he was “under pressure to run for the chairmanship of the party”, but that there are issues on the ground still stopping his declaration.

According to him, he doesn’t even know whether the convention will be held as scheduled as “forces are fighting against the unity and progress of the party”.

“But then, I can’t refuse or turn down a request coming directly from the youth constituency of the party.

“You know they were instrumental to the change in the political narrative and advancement of the Labour Party in the last election, so we can’t joke with their position.

“I truly appreciate their commitment to the success of our party and I won’t take their call for granted.

”In a couple of hours, we shall make our final decision on this matter.”

The former All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain had before the 2023 general elections, dumped his party for the LP, saying he believed in the ideology of the party and its candidate, Mr Peter Obi.

Speaking on the controversy surrounding the convention, Dr Yunusa Salisu Tanko, Chief Spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council for the 2023 election, told Newsmen on Saturday that Abure failed to carry the stakeholders of the party along in the planned convention.

He said, “All we want is for us to build a political party we all will be proud of. A part that will represent the interest of everybody.

“We have all that it takes to build the structure of the party. That is the best thing that can happen to us as a party.

“We don’t want a closed convention like the Chairman is trying to have. Because it is likely going to be a closed convention instead of an open convention and that is not good for us.

“Many people did not even know that there was going to be a convention. I was not aware of the convention either. I saw it in the newspaper just like any other person.

“This is what NLC is also saying. Nobody is against any particular person but for us to have a convention that all of us will be proud of. Peter Obi has also said that the convention should be open for everybody.”

Asked to clarify the viral report purporting Peter Obi’s decision to dump the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, Tanko simply said, “It is not true. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing like that”.

Students Loan: What you need to know about the new bill

The National Assembly, on Wednesday, passed the Students Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024. This comes after separate considerations by both the Senate and the House of Representatives of the report of the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund

Less than one year after President Bola Tinubu signed the Students Loan Bill into law, the legislation was returned to the National Assembly for a complete overhaul.

For eight months, President Tinubu, who campaigned on providing loans to students, struggled to implement the law with several missed deadlines.

The president faced criticism over the several missed deadlines for the implementation of the policy.

However, Mr Tinubu on Thursday forwarded a bill to the National Assembly seeking a repeal and re-enactment of the bill.

According to the president, some of the provisions of the law made it difficult to kickstart the project. He, therefore, urged lawmakers to do a complete overhaul of the legislation.

The bill seeks to address the challenges relating to the management structure of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELF), applicant eligibility requirements, loan purpose, funding sources, and disbursement and repayment procedures,” the president said in a letter addressed to the National Assembly.

Inclusion of all students

One of the major issues the proposed amendment seeks to cure is the exclusion of some of the group of students because of the wording of the law.

The existing Act provides that the loan is for payment of tuition fees and nothing more. President Tinubu, in the letter, said such a provision would prevent federal university students from accessing the loan because they don’t pay tuition.

Under the current legislation, students can only apply for loans to pay tuition fees. Federal tertiary institutions don’t charge tuition fees. However, students must pay other institutional charges.

Also, under the current Act, students would not be able to apply to the Fund for loans to cover those other institutional charges or their other upkeep costs, thus defeating the purpose of the loan, which is to ease access to tertiary education for young Nigerians.

The proposed bill says the fund can “provide loans to qualified Nigerians for tuition, fees, charges, and upkeep during their studies in approved tertiary education institutions and vocational and skills acquisition institutions in Nigeria.”

Transfer of operational powers from the CBN governor

In the current Act, the CBN Governor has the responsibility of administering the fund. The administration of the Fund is vested in a Special Committee, with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as the Chairman. The Governor implements the committee’s executive decisions and appoints a Secretary to assist.

If the new bill is passed, the CBN governor will be stripped of the implementation of the fund. The implementation will now be handled by the Managing Director of the Fund.

Mr Tinubu said in his letter: “The Act imposes on the Governor of the CBN management and executive responsibilities outside the core mandate of the CBN, which should be the Governor’s focus.”

Removing Guarantors

The bill by the President is also seeking to remove some of the conditions to qualify students for the loan.

For instance, for any student to qualify for the loan, he must provide two guarantors who shall be a civil servant of level 12 and above, a lawyer with ten years post-call experience, a judicial officer, or a justice of the peace

Also, the current Act allows only applicants with a combined family income of less than N500,000 per annum to apply. Under this provision, the child of a person who earns N45,000 a month is disqualified from applying for this loan.

Children of loan defaulters banned from accessing loan

In addition, the Act contains a provision that bans the children of defaulters from accessing loans.

In the proposed Act, student applicants can no longer be disqualified based on their parent’s loan history.

Payment to commence two years after work

The Act criminalizes failure to repay loans obtained from the Fund without consideration for circumstances, including unemployment, death, or disability, that may affect an individual’s ability to pay.

It merely provides that “The Fund shall not initiate loan recovery efforts until two years after the completion of the National Youth Service program.”

In the letter, the president said beneficiaries of the Fund shall begin repayment as soon as they are employed in any capacity.

Loan forgiveness in the event of death

In the proposed bill, the loan ends with the death of a beneficiary.

The president said the bill “makes provision for loan forgiveness in the event of death or acts of God causing inability to repay.”

“A beneficiary may request an extension of enforcement action by the Fund by providing a sworn affidavit indicating that he is not employed in any capacity and is not receiving any income.

“Only a person who provides a false statement to the Fund under this section is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years.”
