Episode 2

Uju was so excited to be taken. She wanted to go and appreciate Nelson and his friend, Joe but was told that they were busy inside.

So she left.

Uju resumed work the following day. She was provided with everything she needed for her job.

Her workspace was demarcated from Nelson's office by a cubicle wall with a connecting door in the middle.

On her table, were a desktop computer, an Office Telephone and some files.

She was so happy and grateful for the day he met Joe. If not for him, she wouldn't be opportune to work in such a place.

A few minutes later, her boss, Mr Nelson arrived and everyone welcomed him.

Uju helped him carry his briefcase to his office and afterwards went back to her workspace.

She admired Nelson's charisma, but she was bothered that he wasn't giving her any special attention as she expected. He doesn't neglect her either but behaves like he hasn't met her before.

She decided to play along.

Uju put in her effort in working for Nelson.

As time went on, she was beginning to forget that they ever met.

So one evening, Uju met Joe on her way back from work, and they exchanged greetings.

"How is work?"

"Fine."

"I hope you are coping."

"Yes, but I don't understand your friend."

"How do you mean?"

"He behaves as if I'm a total stranger to him."

Joe laughed.

"You wouldn't blame him, my dear, he's married."

Uju was shocked.

"Are you serious, when?"

"About 3 years now."

"Wow, I never knew."

They switched topics and later parted ways.

Uju couldn't believe that Nelson was married.

"He couldn't even wait for me and I thought he loved me," she thought on her way back to her house.

After that day, Uju became a different person.
She then sees Nelson as someone who betrayed her love and trust.

"I loved him and I thought he wanted us back together. Maybe he wanted to use his marriage to torment me, I know what to do."

She continued working for him but had a different intention.

She eavesdropped on every phone conversation that Mr Nelson made.

So one day, her boss was answering a phone call.

"Yes darling, you know we've not had quality time with each other ever since we got married."

Uju heard that and listened attentively.

"But you know I've missed you. When is your annual leave coming up?"

"What? In 3 months. That's far now. But you may come home as usual, right?"

"Ok, I'll wait."

"Junior is doing very fine."

"Ok, I love you."

"Bye."

When the call ended, Uju was fuming in anger.

"So of truth, he's married and I'm still here. See the way he's even declaring love and affection to another lady, mtcheeew."

Nelson's wife was a pilot for an international airline.

She comes home randomly, sometimes once in a week, sometimes once in a month, depending on the country on her flying schedule.

She only has full access to her family when she's on leave.

They both have a son who is been taken care of by Nelson's younger sister who lives with them.

Nelson loves and respects his wife so much.

They always get in touch with each other over the phone, whenever she's away from home.

Episode 1

Nelson was sceptical about his friend's recommendation.

"Consider her, please. It's not fair, she's just roaming the streets. For old-time sake please help her."

"I don't want to have anything to do with her anymore."

"You are saying this because you haven't seen her state. If you see Uju, I swear you will pity her."

"Hmmm, okay I'll consider your plea.

"Thanks my man, you are a good man."

Uju was Nelson's ex-girlfriend, they dated during their university days.

During their service year, Uju met a wealthy married man who promised her the whole world.

The man rented an apartment for her, gifted her a car and offered her a huge sum of money each time she graced his bed.

Later on, Uju started neglecting Nelson and finally broke up with him because she felt she met a richer person unknown to her that the man was hypertensive. About a year later, the man had a serious heart attack and passed out in her house.

The man's wife used her influence to remand Uju in prison for three years.

When Uju was later released, she lost everything that the man gave her. She was forced to go back to her poor parents and live with them.

It was about two months after her release that Nelson's friend saw her.

Nelson had placed an advert for a secretary in his Consulting firm and his friend was pleading that he should take Uju in as his secretary.

Nelson spurned at first but because he pitied her, he accepted.

Nelson's friend then told him that he would bring her to his office the following day. They talked about other things and he later left.

The following day, Nelson's friend brought Uju to Nelson's office. He never told her that it was Nelson who owned the place where he got a job for her.

They waited at the reception until they were called in.

Uju was surprised to see Nelson as the Manager of the firm. She was shocked at his transformation. She gazed at him with total disbelief.

Nelson kept to his lane. He pretended as if he had never met her before. He welcomed them and referred Uju to HR for an interview. He did it just for formality's sake.

She was taken afterwards and her documents were collected.

She was asked to resume work immediately.

THE ORDEALS OF NNEOMA

Episode 3

******

Stella was preparing the leave the house when Dera came home crying.

She was shocked to see her at home by that time of the day.

"Dera what's the problem?"

She continued crying.

"What happened to you?" her mother asked looking worried.

"I was given two weeks suspension."

"Why?"

"Because of that yesterday's fight."

"What? Because you were defending me."

"Yes, it's all Nneoma's fault."

"So it has gotten to this, they reported you to the school authority. She will come back and meet me here."

Dera nodded in support of what her mother said.

"I'm going to the health centre to see someone. I'll be back soon."

"Okay, mummy."

She then left for the health centre.

A few hours later, Nneoma came back from school.

By then, Dera's mum had come back from the health centre. She was seated outside discussing with Dera.

Nneoma greeted her but she didn't answer her greetings.
Nneoma saw that her stepmother wasn't in a good mood and decided to go into the house.

"And where do you think you are going?" her stepmother asked.

Nneoma stood still.

"Come back here!"

Nneoma went back to her fidgeting.

"So it's because of your stup!d!ty that my child was suspended from school," Stella yelled while panting and heavily h!tting her with a freshly cut cane.

Nneoma was screaming and pleading as she h!t her.

When she was done bëating her, she pushed her aside and ordered her to kneel.

Dera was happily watching what her mother was doing to Nneoma.

Later on, Dera and her mother went into the house leaving Nneoma behind.

They cared less about her as they were happily consuming a big plate of jollof rice in the room.

"Mummy, do you know that a scholarship exam is coming up in our school in two weeks?"

"Really? Two weeks? Meaning that you may not participate."

"That's the day I was asked to come back to school with my parents."

"Hei!!!" Stella lamented and heaved a huge sigh.

"Mummy any problem?"

"Don't worry."

A few hours later, their father came back from his shop and saw Nneoma kneeling outside looking exhausted.

He was shocked.

"Get up from there. Why are you kneeling here all alone, by this time of the night," he asked as he helped her get up.

Nneoma couldn't answer him, she only greeted him as they walked into the house.

Dera was already asleep then.

"Stella! Stella!! what did Nneoma do to warrant this type of pun!shment?"

"Have you asked her what she did, don't even disturb me."

Nneoma's father couldn't say a word to Stella again.

He took Nneoma to his room and left for the kitchen. He brought food which he believed meant for only him and gave it to Nneoma.

She ate the food like she hadn't tasted anything the whole day.

It was when she finished eating that she removed her school uniform and had her bath.

"Nne, what did you do to your mother?"

"Nothing, Dera was suspended from school and she said it was my fault."

"Dera was suspended? Why? And how was that your fault?"

Nneoma then explained to her father why Dera was suspended.

"Why then is she blaming you?"

As they were talking, Stella barged into her husband's room.

"My daughter was suspended because she fought as a result of this girl telling everybody that I was w!cked."

"That's not what happened, Stella."

"She's a l!ar."

Nneoma's father asked Nneoma to narrate what happened to her stepmother.

Nneoma then gave a full account of what happened just the way she had told her father.

"You don't know this girl, she's a big l!er."

She then faced Nneoma

"Because my daughter is sleeping, you cooked up a story against her. Let me just tell you, as long as she's suspended, you too will not go to school."

"That can never happen in this house," Nneoma's father rebuffed.

"She will not go! Because of you, my intelligent child will not participate in the scholarship exam that's coming up in two weeks, you too will not write that exam even if you are nominated."

Nneoma's father was confused, he then turned to Nneoma.

"Which exam is that?"

Nneoma told him about the scholarship.

"And you said she won't participate, she must write the exam."

"You are supporting her, right? You are now against me because of her. We shall see," she said and angrily left the room.

Nneoma was terrified

"Don't worry, she is just making empty threats," her father convinced her.

It was then that Nneoma told her father that she was nominated to participate in the scholarship exam.

Her father was delighted.

"Don't mind your mother, I'll make sure you participate in the exam. This type of opportunity hardly come by. You need to focus more on your studies now."

Nneoma just nodded and he left for the bedroom where Dera was deeply asleep.

THE ORDEALS OF NNEOMA

Episode 2

******

Nneoma does everything possible to stay out of trouble because of the type of stepmother she had.

She hardly has time to make friends and at school, she keeps to herself most of the time. Dera always monitors her activities at school so she can give a rundown to her mother when she gets home.

Dera was always free to mingle with others.

So there was a boy in her class that she was crushing on but the boy wasn't showing interest in her. She tried all she could to get his attention but to no avail.

So one day, she bought a gift for the boy, thinking that it would make a change but he rejected it. She never knew that her fellow students were watching as all that was happening.

A few days later, Dera had a disagreement with one of her classmates immediately after dismissal and they started exchanging words.

"Instead of you focusing on your studies, you are there seeking the attention of a boy," the girl lashed Dera.

"Is it your business?" Dera said in defence though shy.

"Keep stealing your w*cked mother's money to buy a gift for a boy."

"You called my mother w*cked?"

"Yes!"

"Your mother is a pig."

The girl got angry and hit her. Then they started fighting. Other students clustered around them and made jest of them. The girl beat Dera black and blue. It was Nneoma who finally separated them and everyone dispersed.

So when they got home, her mother saw the way she looked and requested to know what happened.

Nneoma wanted to talk and Dera quickly interrupted her.

"Mummy someone called you w*cked."

"What! Me w*cked."

"Who else is telling everyone that you are w*cked except Nneoma?"

Stella quickly pounced on Nneoma and started beating her right there.

"They are calling me wicked because I raised you instead of allowing you to d!e with your mother, ungrateful id!ot, get out of my sight."

Nneoma cried her heart out.

That didn't prevent her from doing her usual house chores.

The following morning, they both left for school. The students were in the assembly ground when the school principal walked up to the stage holding an envelope.

He exchanged greetings with the students and teachers. He then opened the envelope and brought out a letter and went further to address them.

"This letter is from a reputable oil company in this country. They have offered to sponsor some of our brilliant students to study abroad."

The students roared and clapped in excitement.

"We will pick the best students from different classes to feature in different categories of the scholarship. The exam for the scholarship will be coming up in two weeks."

The students were filled with enthusiasm.

"Again, I learnt that two SS 1 students fought yesterday after school," the Principal continued.

The students started murmuring.

He then mentioned the names of the students and asked them to step out.

Dera and the girl she fought with walked up to the stage.

The Principal then collected a cane from one of the teachers and gave them ten lashes each on their butt0cks. He then asked them to step aside.

"I don't care to know what brought about the fight, I believe you all know the rules and regulations of this school."

"Yes sir!!" the students roared.

"Very good. Both of you are suspended from coming to school till after two weeks. And on the day of resumption, your parents will come with you. Go and carry your bags and leave at once."

Both of them cried and begged to be forgiven but it didn't change the principal's statement.

When they left, he continued with the rest of the students in the assembly

"This should serve as a lesson to some of you who will choose to behave like an!mals. If you break the school rules, you will get punished for it."

Dera carried her bag and went back to the house.

THE ORDEALS OF NNEOMA.

Episode 1

******

"Buy every item on that list and come back as fast as possible," Stella said as she handed a black nylon bag, a list and some money to Nneoma.l

"Mummy, please let me rest a little. I just finished cleaning the whole house, let Dera go," Nneoma said looking at Dera who was lying on the couch, watching television.

Dera turned and looked at her. She then rolled her eyes and continued watching the television.

Stella sprang up and gave Nneoma a hot slap.

"You are beginning to grow wings! Oh, you can now talk back at me. If you repeat this next time, I'll skln you alive. Get out of my sight!"

Nneoma quickly ran out of the house and left for the market looking gloomy.

Nneoma was the only child of her mother, who d! ed while giving birth to her at their community health centre.
Stella who was one of the nurses who aided Nneoma's mother in giving birth, offered to take care of the motherless child.

Then, Stella lived in the same street with Mr Ike, Nneoma's father. Stella was in her late thirties then but had no husband or child.

Mr Ike accepted that she should take care of his child because he doesn't have any relatives around and he was a patent medical dealer. He leaves early in the morning and comes back late at night.

Besides, Mr Ike loved the fact that Stella was a nurse, he believed she could take good care of her. Stella was like a godsent to him. He was glad that someone accepted to play the role of a mother to his little daughter.

Then Mr. Ike usually visits Stella to know how his child is doing. As time went on, Mr Ike started developing feelings for Stella and later on, married her.

She then moved into his house with Nneoma.

Stella was a good mother to Nneoma until she gave birth to her own child, Dera. She then started comparing the way Mr Ike took care of both kids. She would try as much as possible to see that Dera got the best of everything. Sometimes she deprived Nneoma of things that rightfully belonged to her.

Nneoma and Dera were enrolled into school. They were in the same class even though Nneoma was two years older.

As time went on, Stella kept maltreating Nneoma even to the point that she told her she wasn't her biological mother.

Mr Ike wouldn't know most of the things going on in his house because he is focused on his business. He leaves for his pharmaceutical shop early in the morning and comes back late at night.

Stella and her colleagues usually don't go to work every day. They scheduled their days of work. They would only be serious at work when the government representatives came for an inspection at the health centre.

Stella was mostly at home or with her husband in his shop.

Previously, Dera didn't like the way her mother treated Nneoma but she started thinking like her mother since she noticed that Nneoma performed better than her in school. Stella either wasn't pleased that Nneoma did better than her child in school.

They were always looking for a way to frustrate her.

Nneoma does most of the house chores. Dera would only do a little when their father was around.

Nneoma had gotten tired of reporting them to her father because he would only believe what Stella told him. Sometimes, reporting them would even bring more pain to her because Stella would give her more punishment.

Nneoma had so far accepted her fate.

She never ceases to study her books at night. That was the only time her stepmother wouldn't disturb her about chores because her father was usually around then.
