The mummy known currently as The Younger Lady, showcases a wounded jaw stuffed with linen wrappings, put in place by the Ancient Egyptian embalmers. Also visible are the double piercing of the earlobes, a fashion Egyptologists believe was a feminine attribute.

Modern advances in science have proven The Younger Lady to be the biological mother of Tutankhamun, and a daughter of Amenhotep III and his Great Royal Wife, Tiye.

Mummy of Queen Tiye
The mummy of Queen Tiye was found within the second side chamber of the tomb of Amenhotep II. Found in 1898 by Victor Loret, it was discovered that Amenhotep II’s tomb had later been used by the Ancient Egyptian priesthood as a storage for many royal mummies spanning both the 18th and 19th Dynasties.
Tiye’s luscious and lengthy hair is a very distinguishable feature of her mummy, and it was this very hair that certified her identity, as rather amazingly, in his tomb, within one of four miniature sarcophagi marked with the Queen’s name, King Tutankhamun, was buried with a lock of his grandmother’s hair. (Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 60698)
Electron probe analysis of the hair in the 1970s concluded a match between the hair within Tutankhamun’s tomb and the hair upon the mummy of Queen Tiye.
More recent and more modern investigation in the 2010s using DNA analysis conducted by Dr. Zahar Saleem tells us with no uncertainty that the electron probe analysis was correct, and the hair is a total match.
What’s more is, the mummy who for so long was simply known as The Elder Lady was confirmed through modern DNA analysis also conducted by Dr. Zahar Saleem, to definitely be the daughter of Yuya and Thuya. This DNA match means, the identity of the mummy known for decades as The Elder Lady is absolutely Queen Tiye.
Queen Tiye’s body was mummified in the traditional ways of her time, and she is well-preserved despite postmortem injuries likely occurring during tomb robberies. The Queen’s left arm is raised in the royal pose across her chest, and her hand is firmly rigid in a clasping grip, as if she were to be holding something.
Sadly, what she was buried clutching is unfortunately missing and was more than likely pulled from her in antiquity. Tiye’s right arm is still attached to her body, laying alongside her and hovering slightly over her lower torso, her middle finger is absent.
Queen Tiye’s teeth have moderate ware and are in good shape for her age range, which is approximately somewhere between 40–50 years.
Fascinatingly, only one wisdom tooth remains embedded within the gum socket, and holes for the other three are present, indicating that they were removed in her lifetime, giving us an amazing insight into Ancient Egypt dentistry of her time period; the removal of wisdom teeth!

Yasuke, a tall African man, arrived in Japan in 1579 and made history as the first foreign-born man to become a samurai warrior. Originally a slave from Mozambique, Yasuke was brought to Japan by Portuguese traders. His striking height and dark skin captured the attention of the powerful Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga, who, intrigued, ordered his servants to try and scrub off what he believed was "black ink" on Yasuke's skin. Despite this unusual introduction, Nobunaga took Yasuke into his service, providing him with a house, a sum of money, and a katana. Yasuke went on to serve Nobunaga faithfully, participating in fierce battles as an esteemed samurai. His journey from being a Portuguese property to becoming a respected member of the Japanese elite is a remarkable testament to his extraordinary life.

The Lost City of Heracleion, Alexandria, Egypt.

It was a legend.

Appearing in a few rare inscriptions and ancient texts, the city of Thonis Heracleion was hidden away for thousands of years, submerged deep under the sea.

The ruins and artifacts made from granite and diorite are remarkably preserved, and give a glimpse into what was, 2300 years ago, one of the great port cities of the world.

The granite ruins and artifacts are remarkably well preserved. Among the underwater ruins were 64 ships, 700 anchors, a treasure trove of gold coins, 16-foot-tall statues, and, most notably, the remains of a massive temple to Amun-Gereb, supreme god of the ancient Egyptians.

The city was likely criss-crossed with a network of canals—a kind of ancient Egyptian Venice.

Over 2,000 years ago, Thonis Heracleion was undoubtedly one of the greatest port cities of the world.

The question of how it ended up on the floor of the Mediterranean remains unanswered.

The wreck of Endurance was discovered on 5 March 2022, nearly 107 years after she sank. It lies 9,869 feet (3,008 m) deep, and is in good condition. It is designated as a protected historic site and monument under the Antarctic Treaty System.
The Endurance was crushed by ice and sank in the Weddell Sea off Antarctica on 21 November 1915.
The three-masted vessel was lost during Sir Ernest Shackleton's failed attempt at making the first land crossing of Antarctica

2,000 year old human torso of an Irish man that was found in a bog back in June of 2003.

The remains were naturally mummified and preserved so well that scientists were able to even determine his last meal after analyzing the contents of his stomach: wheat and buttermilk. For at least 4 months prior to his death, he was shown to have a meat rich diet. Based on the length of his arms, he was estimated to have been 6 ft 6 inches (1.98 m) tall which would have been extremely tall for that time period.

The man also had manicured nails which has led to speculation that he was not engaged in manual labor and was someone of high status. His body is currently on display at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.

Peering into a Vanished World: The Chimu Mummy and the Wonders of an Ancient Civilization 😲

Dating back to approximately 1200-1400 AD, the mummy’s remarkable preservation is a testament to the dry desert climate and the Chimu’s sophisticated burial practices. Unlike the elaborate mummies of Egypt, created through meticulous embalming techniques, the Chimu mummies were naturally desiccated by the harsh environment. This process, combined with the Chimu’s custom of wrapping the deceased in layers of cotton and wool textiles, led to the incredible preservation of both the body and its artifacts.

The fetal position, a recurring motif in Chimu burials, is believed to symbolize rebirth and the return to the womb of Mother Earth. The bound hands and feet potentially represent a state of submission to the afterlife or a desire to restrain the deceased from returning to the world of the living. These practices highlight the Chimu’s complex understanding of death and their belief in a continuous cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

This is not a carved wooden hand but a close up of a 2300 year old Iron Age bog body called “Old Croghan Man”. A bog body is a human cadaver that has been naturally mummified in a peat bog. He was found in 2003 at Croghan Hill in Co. Offaly in Ireland. The man's apparently manicured nails led to speculation that he was not someone engaged in manual labor, so he possibly had a high status. The man was buried at a bog (likely once a lake) at the foot of an ancient hill that was used for kingship ceremonies by Druids, probably as a sacrifice to the gods.
The body is now on display in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.

The Ice Maiden.

The Llullaillaco Maiden was an Incan girl who was sacrificed around the year 1553 on the summit of Llullaillaco Volcano, located on the border of Argentina and Chile. The Maiden was found relatively well preserved along with two other human bodies in 1999. She has since been nicknamed the “Ice Maiden” due to her preservative state.

The Maiden came from the Incan society which was well known for their religious ceremonies. In this ritualistic practice, the Incas would sacrifice some of their members in ceremonies called capacocha. The Maiden was deemed to be one of the capacocha offerings, who were especially chosen for their impeccable qualities. Research has revealed that the Maiden was between 12 and 15 years old when she was chosen for the capacocha.

The Maiden was the most well-preserved of the three bodies which were discovered at the summit of the Llullaillaco Volcano. All of the bodies underwent many tests, including genomic sequencing and DNA analysis, in order to reconstruct their lives. Through this research, scientists have been able to reconstruct a profile of all three frozen bodies, including the age of the Maiden, her diet, her medical history, and her origins.

Analysis of artifacts and clothing found along with the bodies have also revealed new information about the Incan civilization. Scientists have developed statements on their funerary traditions, engineering capabilities, and their knowledge of the environment to construct an idea of their lifestyles.

Due to the preservative state of the Maiden and the other two bodies, she has become an incredible tool for scientific research. She allows us to gain insight into the traditions of the Incan culture and to look into their beliefs and practices. She has been invaluable to the scientific community in learning about the Incan culture, religious beliefs, and life histories.
