Delta retirees protest in Asaba as Okowa gallivants in Osun State as VP hopeful
By Jon Egie
While Governor Okowa along with the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar were in Osun State for a mega rally of the party in support of Adeleke's election as governor of that State, retirees from public primary schools in Delta State staged a protest demanding the payment of their gratuities.
The protest which held today in Asaba featured teachers who retired after 35 years of meritorious service to the state and were yet to be paid their gratuities seven years on the line.
Speaking on behalf of the retirees, their leader, Chief Mrs Ejieh C.E said in spite of repeated promises made during meetings with a delegation of the State government, Gov Okowa bluntly refused to honour his words and have left the retirees in the cold, choosing to pursue a Vice President of Nigeria ambition.
She lamented that in the face of public outcry to the governor to demonstrate a humane sense of leadership on the matter, nothing tangible had been done even when it was clear that the resources to reduce the burden of debt owed the retirees were available to the State Government.
The retirees are owed over 54 billion naira as the state government just concluded payment of 2014 class of retirees .
She pleaded with the state government to declare a state of emergency in the public primary schools retirees gratuities payment matter and also ensure that the over 5.9 billion naira owed by some local councils in the state are duely remitted to the Bureau of local government that is in charge of the payment.
The protest which lasted for hours led to gridlock of vehicular movement along Anwai Road, Asaba where the Govt House is situated. The road was completely blocked by the retirees who sat on the road demanding to see the governor face to face to explain why he derelicted on his statutory obligation to pay their gratuities.

The Monarch also as an astute advocate of peace, has always enjoined communities in the kingdom to get involved in activities that would help promote bonding, unity and peace amongst the people.
Hence he had always expressed concern that instead of the people to engage in
wrestling, forklores, dances and other important activities like obtained in the days of yore; that would bring them together as one, they engage in unnecessary bickering that tear them apart.
However, in the face of the Monarch's concern, the people of Evbuarhue in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State have decided to be good example for emulation, by other Villages in the Kingdom.
They demonstrated that the people could also go to the Palace of the Oba not only with issues for him to resolve; but to entertain and make him happy as the royal father he truly is, and custodian of the culture and tradition of the Kingdom.
Recently, the people of Evbuarhue led by Mrs. Ekinadose Ehibor were in the Palace of the Oba, to entertain him with the traditional religion dance of the deity: Orhionmwon N' saibo.

Before the very revered Monarch and his Chiefs, the people in their dexterity danced heartily to his delight in re - enactment of the days of old.
After the eye popping performance of the female folks, in curiosity and hunger for more, the Monarch asked the male elders and young men amongst them to come on stage too.

ASUU strike: Day II of Students protest in Benin
By Kingsley Abavo, Benin
Thursday, 5 May, 2022 marked the day 2 of University students protest of the lingering Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Strike in Benin-City, Edo State Capital.
The students began the protest on Wednesday, 4 May, 2022 seizing the City Centre; King's Square (Ring road) and major roads, for better part of the day.
There was increase of security operatives monitoring the protest, as heavy traffic congestion hold on all the link roads, with motorists trying to find alternative routes.
Nigeria has 49 Federal Universities, 54 owned by State Governments and 109 private ones.
But only the Federal Universities are on strike as some of the major demands by ASUU do not affect the State owned and private Universities.
For example; the issues of revitalisation fund and the controversial Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, (IPPIS), are peculiar to only the Federal Universities.
While the issue of inadequate funding of the education sector cuts across all public Universities, like the demand for better salaries and other conditions of service.
However, the Federal and States' Universities are affected by proliferation, as some State Governments, for instance; Abia and Delta struggling with the challenge of funding one University, are creating more.
The ASUU accuses the Government of poor commitment to the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA); the continued use of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System and refusal to adopt the Universities Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), among others.
According to ASUU, Benin Zone coordinator, Fred Esumeh the Union wants the Federal Government to honour the terms of the Memorandum of Action it signed with the body on the 22 December, 2020.
“Resolution of the outstanding issues of the deployment of the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS), and the signing and implementation of the draft
ASUU Strike: No school, no election Students threaten
By Kingsley Abavo, Benin
University students who are on forced holiday courtesy of the lingering Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Strike, have issued: 'No school, no election' threat to the Federal Government.
They issued the threat in a protest on Wednesday, 4 May, 2022 in Benin-City, Edo State Capital.
For better hours of the day, under the close watch of security operatives; students majorly from the University of Benin, and the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma seized the City Centre: King's Square (Ring road) chanting different songs of revolution; protesting the seeming non challant posture of Government to their plight.
They said; students are not taking side with any of the feuding parties: ASUU and Federal Government, rather, all they want is the reopening of the schools to enable them continue their studies; else, there will be no election in the country.
They criticized Government for being so committed to the preparation for another election to enable politicians grab power; whereas, students are left to rot at home without addressing issues raised by the ASUU.
Hence, the nation would witness unprecedented disruption of the elections if the prevailing situation is not urgently reversed, they threatened.
"They are busy buying nomination form for N100m, a sum which could help to a large extent in addressing what ASUU is asking.
"These politicians have sent their children abroad to school, and the children of the talakawas are left at home to be continually fed with eba and egusi soup by parents; what do you expect?
"In the next few days if the Federal Government fails to do something worthwhile, what happened during the EndSars protest will be a tip of the iceberg," one of the protesting students said.
The President, Students Union Government (SUG) UNIBEN, Forster Amadin also spoke with Journalists.
"The reason we are here, is to register our displeasure about the on going ASUU s

THIS IS WICKED, SADISTIC AND DEMONIC. STOP IT NOW.
By: Felix Tony Nwaka
Ten years ago, you fought a man in a wrestling competition.
Even though you won the contest, you were unhappy.
You were offended that the man came up as your challenger.
But you later said you'd forgiven him.
For you eventually became his boss.
And to demonstrate your sincerity (for so it seemed),
You invited him into the most sacred corners of your temple.
And for many years you fed him with the choicest foods.
Even your most exotic drinks were at his disposal.
You positioned him as a trusted lieutenant.
The world applauded your vision and magnanimity.
And he took extra steps to serve you loyally and competently.
Now, ten years down the line, you lay an ambush for him.
The same man you told the world you had forgiven.
You now raise an army and resources to bring him down.
Shocked and confused, men of honour run to you and ask,
"Our brother and leader, what is the problem?
Why are you mobilizing these deadly forces against him?"
And you reply, "I have not forgotten or forgiven him,
For what he did against me ten years ago."
"What!" They yell. "You mean you still hold that grudge?
Then you should have kept him at arm's length from day one.
Why coddle him all these years in your house,
Only to now unleash your wrath with the hammer of death?"
Unbelievable! Preposterous! Sacrilege! Bizarre! Unspeakable!
The heavens rumble and thunder in indignation.
At such a barbaric display of duplicity and cruelty.
For every Sunday, you move from church to church,
Sitting at the front pew, basking in the air of public esteem, Reading the Bible, preaching forgiveness and reconciliation.
Yet, at the same time, you have dug a pit. The boss digs a pit,
For his subordinate whom he had deceptively pulled closer.
No, this is ungodly. The height of hypocrisy and wickedness.
It erases whatever good works you may have done elsewhere.
Indeed an unforgiving spirit is insatiably destructive.
Let's put an end to this
