No, you haven't written rubbish. That's a good way to start.

Many authors seek to write a truly great book, but they've been stuck for ages on the idea and haven't penned down even a chapter. Often, this is due to the fear of the first draft. It's the fear of ex*****on.

This stage is tricky because you must face your fears to write a great book. It's the hardest for first-timers and experienced authors alike. Your worst fear is that you might end up writing something that makes no sense at all. So, you never write anything at all.

But then, that's the only way forward.

Creating an epic masterpiece begins with a crappy draft. This is why editing exists. It's how you work your message and story through the "nonsense" to make it sensible and enjoyable.

Step by step, with some editing here and there, your book is on its way to being published.
Remember, no one attains perfection in a day.

Starting a book doesn't have to be overwhelming!

The usual mental blocks are surmountable. Don't be too hard on yourself, take it a step at a time.

Here are 5 steps to help you:

1. Plan ahead: Approach your book like a business plan. Outline every step and allocate timing to them. Schedule a timetable and stick with it. When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

2. Use the right authoring tools: Your book outline, project timetable, and MS Word are all you need. If you need something extra, try a nice cup of coffee and the absence of self-judgment.

3. The right mindset: The psychological preparation you need to start and finish is, to do. not. be. hard. on. yourself. If you do, it will lead to writer's block. Permit yourself to do the worst work possible because there will be time to fix it.

4. Your book outline: Your book outline is your ex*****on resource. It will guide you to ex*****on, give you more clarity, and defend you against stalling.

5. Get an accountability partner: In life, some of the best encouragement comes from those who believe in us and cheer us on.
