WAEC MALPRACTISES

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, claims to have arrested 10 supervisors over involvement and/or promotion of exam malpractices in the ongoing SSCE across the country.

The Head of Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Patrick Areghan, revealed this to reporters in a statement, specifying that the arrests were made in Lagos, Kano, Bayelsa and Kaduna states.

He also vehemently criticized the supervisors' lack of diligence, saying, “Our major problem lies with the supervisors as only few of them are reliable and it’s unfortunate these are the supervisors that were nominated by the various states ministries of education and we employed them. We don’t have the power to nominate any supervisors on our own, we only made use of credible teachers supplied to us by the ministry,”

However, Areghan did express utmost satisfaction with the exams in Abuja and encouraged the candidates over there to avoid the use of cheating materials. He said that those who decide to cheat in the exams by any form or means, including impersonation (i.e. writing for another candidate) would most likely not see their results.

The Permanent Secretary at Federal Ministry of Education, David Adejo also spoke during the engagement, emphasizing on the impact of biometric technology in the reduction of malpractices.

He said: “Malpractices can occur in the examination centres with the collision of the school authority. Biometric machines have reduced malpractice to the barest minimal, I will be surprised if I hear of any malpractice”.

What are your thoughts on the issue of Exams malpractices in the SSCE?
