2023: Highest spender will win, not the best candidate – Afe Babalola & Co

Foremost legal luminary Afe Babalola said that Nigeria’s forthcoming presidential election slated for February 25 will be won by the highest spender and not the best candidates among the contenders.

Babalola stated this at a media briefing in Ado Ekiti on Thursday.

He expressed worry that the 2023 general elections will be conducted under the 1999 constitution against his advice, saying the poll will only reproduce those, who have brought Nigeria to a sordid state.

He said, “It is not who can make a difference that will win this election, I repeat, it is not the person who has all it takes – age, health, education, and patriotism, that will win the election; the winner of this election I can bet it, is going to be the person who has made money in this country.

“It is the person who has the money that will win,” the legal icon added.

According to Babalola, the recent endorsement of Peter OBI 2023 of the Labour Party Nigeria by former President Olusegun Obasanjo does not factor in the role money bags will play in the election.

Only a new constitution with stringent conditions for political candidates will save Nigeria from a total collapse.

Babalola added, “A man who wants to rule the whole country or any part of the country, ought to be screened. Has he ever worked before, what type of work did he do, did he steal there, was he a good manager, does he pay his taxes regularly, what contributions has he made to society?

“You cannot just come from nowhere and become president, become governor, become a member of the house; these are transactional businessmen

“I still stand by my suggestion that any election conducted under the present 1999 Constitution cannot and will not produce new leaders with new ideas, rather any election conducted with the 1999 Constitution will merely result in recycling people who have brought Nigeria to grinding poverty, unemployment, under-funded education, and insecurity,” he said.

A number of children allegedly kidnapped have been discovered in a church’s basement on Friday night in the Valentino Area of Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to information gathered, the kids were allegedly victims of a kidnapping syndicate and kept in the underground of the church.

A source stated that the victims were over 50 when police saved them, adding that the pastor of the church and some members of the church had been detained by the police.

In a widely shared video, the kids were seen being driven to the police station by security operatives in a patrol car.

A voice could be heard saying, “They are kidnapped children recovered in the underground cell of a church in Valentino Area of Ondo,” in a video that lasts one minute and 40 seconds.

Speaking on the development, SP Funmilayo Odunlami, the state command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the victims had been brought to the police headquarters in Akure.

“They are transporting the casualties to the headquarters, but I’m still unsure of the specifics.

“I will provide you with the information as soon as I receive it from the DPO.”
