"YOU’RE GROWING IN GRACE"

“Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord.” 2 Peter 3:18 NIV

WHEN PETER exercised enough faith to get out of the boat and walk on water, he sank and looked worse than any of the other disciples. When he tried to defend Jesus, he cut off a man’s ear. When he promised to be loyal, he fell flat on his face. When he tried to advise Jesus, he was the devil’s advocate (See Matthew 16:22-23). Eventually he became a leader in the church—but he got worse before he got better. And his behavior didn’t surprise or discourage Jesus one bit. He will never stop helping a follower of His who is sincerely seeking to grow. He will always lead us forward in growth; but growth requires risk, and risk sometimes means failure. Jesus knows that, but He never gives up on a student just because he or she fails. For example, if you haven’t been confronting people when you should, once you start, the odds are that you will do it badly. If you have rarely encouraged people, your initial attempts may be clumsy. If you have never shared your faith, the first time you do, you may stumble all over yourself. Go ahead and stumble! Failure isn’t about falling down; it’s about refusing to try. One man told his pastor, “If I were God, I wouldn’t put up with someone like me.” The pastor replied, “Then be glad you’re not God, and I’ll be twice as glad—for we would both be sunk.” As long as you hunger for God, He will work with you and in you. Growing in grace means growing spiritually through the stages of childhood, adolescence, and into maturity. So, don’t give up on yourself—God won’t!

"SET OTHER THINGS ASIDE AND SERVE"

“Jesus…laid aside His garments.” John 13:3-4 NKJV

WHEN IT came to serving others, Jesus went first. He “rose from supper…laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself…poured water into a basin…began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded…Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, are You washing my feet?’” (vv. 4-6 NKJV). Try to imagine God incarnate with an apron on, kneeling to wash the feet of those who were unworthy. The Bible says, “Jesus…laid aside His garments.” If you want to serve others, you must be willing to lay aside your image, your comfort, and your agenda. By laying aside His garments, Jesus demonstrated that God has no time for form or fashion. Real ministry isn’t image conscious; it’s done with complete disregard for distinction. But Peter didn’t get it! He was embarrassed to think Jesus would let Himself be seen in such a demeaning light. So, Jesus said: “You call Me Teacher and Lord…If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.…If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them” (vv. 13-15, 17 NKJV). There are certain things in your life that must be set aside in order to serve others and do the will of God. If you want to be blessed, don’t join those who delight in their own speeches and who trumpet their own accomplishments. Set aside everything you privately glory in and pick up the towel of servanthood. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. You go first!

"LEARNING TO LISTEN TO GOD (1)"

“The Spirit…will come and guide you into the full truth.” John 16:13 CEV

JESUS TOLD His disciples, “I have much more to say to you, but right now it would be more than you could understand. The Spirit shows what is true and will come and guide you into the full truth” (vv. 12-13 CEV). Jesus spoke these words to men He had spent the previous three years with. Now, wouldn’t you think if Jesus was with us in person, day and night for three years, we would have learned all there is to know? Not so. In fact, Jesus tells us to stay tuned, because He always has something to say to us about every new situation we face. But there are certain things He will only reveal to you when He knows you’re ready to handle them. God wants to speak to you on a one-to-one basis, to lead you step by step into the good things He has in store for you. He cares about the tiniest details of your life. So, never hesitate to take what you consider small things to Him—after all, everything is small to God! He cares about the desires of your heart. He wants to reveal truth to you that will set you free from fear and worry. His plan to share an intimate relationship with you was in place long before you were born. He “marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him” (Acts 17:26-27 NIV). Now think about it: If God planned your life in such minute detail before you were even born, isn’t it important for you to learn how to listen to Him?

"TAKE CONTROL OF THE SMALL THINGS"

“Daniel purposed in his heart.” Daniel 1:8 NKJV

CAN YOU imagine being uprooted from your home and taken prisoner to a hostile country? It happened to Daniel. King Nebuchadnezzar conquered his homeland and carried him off to slavery in Babylon. He lost his house, his job, his freedom, his culture, his friends, and his status as a member of Israel’s nobility. He had to learn to speak a foreign language and live in a place where he didn’t want to be. If you had been Daniel, wouldn’t you have been tempted to focus on the things you couldn’t control, like blaming exile for your unhappiness and feeling sorry for yourself? Not Daniel! He took charge of his life in little areas. The Bible says, “Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the…king’s [food]” (v. 8 NKJV). He decided to live by his convictions—even in small things. That’s important because small battles train you for big ones! If Daniel hadn’t taken control in small things, he wouldn’t have had the strength to say no to big things like worshiping idols or facing the lions’ den without fear or compromise. Maybe you can’t do anything right now about your house or your job or your relationship, but you can change your life by taking control of the little things. Perhaps, like Daniel, it will involve what you eat, what you watch on TV or the internet, what comes out of your mouth, or a refusal to let others dictate your attitude based on how they treat you. When you “purpose in your heart” to honour God in small things, He blesses you and becomes involved in your life in ways you never thought possible.

"TAKE IT EASY, MOM"

“I…give this advice to each one of you…try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities.” Romans 12:3 PHPS

AN OLD, tired looking dog wandered into a woman’s yard. She could tell from looking at him that he had a good home. He followed her inside, down the hall, and promptly fell asleep. Two hours later, he went to the door and she let him out. The next day he came back, resumed his position, and napped for a couple of hours. This went on for a week. Curious, the woman pinned this note to his collar: “Every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.” The next day, the dog showed up with a note that read: “He lives at home with ten children—apparently he needs some quiet time. Can I come with him tomorrow?” If you’re a mother, you can relate! Carla Barnhill, author of The Myth of the Perfect Mother, writes: “I just can’t do it anymore. I can’t keep trying to be SuperMom. I wasn’t all that good at it to begin with. I’ve tried to be the perfect combination of devoted mom…loving wife…solid Christian…and have failed miserably…But even if I had been able to pull all of that off, I’m not convinced any of us should…we don’t have to be impressive…[or] follow some random rules about what motherhood should look like. Grace means we already matter to the One who matters most, our good, loving, and grace-filled God! So let’s drop our capes, put down our halos, retire our medals, and let ourselves be the sometimes flawed, sometimes awesome moms God made us to be.” In other words: “Try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities.”

"IS YOUR BUSINESS STRUGGLING?"
“God is…always ready to help in times of trouble.” Psalm 46:1 NLT

WHEN YOUR business is failing, you can lose your sense of security, your peace of mind, and your ability to sleep. It even affects your family. If that’s where you are today, read these words: “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” Clear your mind for a moment and think about this: Everything you have belongs to God, including your business, right? He is the owner, and you’re the manager. So when trouble comes, you have the right (and the responsibility) to go to Him for help and expect Him to turn things around for you. When nobody else was catching fish, Jesus told the disciples where to find a boatload of them. The Bible says that there is nothing too hard for God (See Jeremiah 32:27), and that includes the problem you’re facing and the situation you are in right now. The writer of Proverbs says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT). And He can guide you through the advice of a friend who is succeeding where you’re failing: “Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success” (Proverbs 15:22 NLT). Sometimes this calls for changing your policies, products, or personnel—and that takes courage and commitment. But if you have built your business on a foundation of integrity, fairness, quality products, and good service, you have the right to go to God in times of trouble, ask for His help, and expect to receive it.

"HOPE FOR THE FUTURE"

“There is…a future…for you…your hope will not be cut off.” Proverbs 23:18 NIV

ARE YOU surrounded by people whose mission is to inject “a dose of reality” into your life? They continually point out how tough the economy is, how dismal the job market is, and how the sky is falling down. Jon Walker writes: “I remember my high school English teacher telling me not to apply to Cornell University because they wouldn’t accept me, and if they did, I wouldn’t be able to do the work…I almost didn’t apply, but a few days later a former teacher said, ‘If you get in, go. You can do it.’ His words made all the difference. I applied and was accepted…The world needs more optimists, encouragers, and inspirers to speak into the hearts of others and say, ‘I believe in you. Follow your passion and live your purpose. If you have the desire, you have the power to make it happen. Keep working hard. You’re improving and getting better. The economy is tough, but you can still grow your business. The job market isn’t great, but you’ll find the right job…Even if you fail, it will lead to something even better. You’re learning and growing.’ The difference between success and failure is belief, and often that belief is instilled in us by someone who encouraged us.” The Bible says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish [lack faith and focus]” (Proverbs 29:18 KJV). Vision is a desire to move ahead; without it, you stay stuck where you are. It doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks; God says, “There is…a future…for you,” and when you look to Him, He will give you the strength to go forward.

"LIVE WITH INTEGRITY AT HOME"

“But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.” Genesis 19:14 NKJV

MAKE YOUR life an open book. Establish a system of values against which all of life is judged. Walk with God; maintain your integrity at work and at home, and you will make the right choice every time. Lot failed to do this, and it cost him dearly. “Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, and said, ‘Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!’ But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.” (v. 14 NKJV). Parent, when you lose your integrity, you lose your credibility. So, guard your children physically when they’re young, and emotionally as they mature. Teach your son to respect girls and interview the guys that date your daughter. Be sure to check what they and you watch on TV and do on the internet. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be fun to be around. Show your children your lighter side. Don’t be so preoccupied with work or church that you’re a prude or a bore. “A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance” (Proverbs 15:13 KJV). The point is, if you “talk the talk,” be sure you “walk the walk.” When Lot tried to warn his family, they “looked at him as though he had lost his senses” (Genesis 19:14 TLB). Was he too busy making a living to teach them what mattered most in life? Did he say one thing and do another? We don’t know. But any way you cut it, his loss was tragic. The truth is that your integrity, or the lack of it, will have consequences not only in your own life but also in the lives of your children.
