DONâT JUDGE MUSIC BY BEAT, BUT BY âŚ
Many believers in Christ are too quick to judge and condemn music at the hearing of their beats/sounds. For knowledge sake, be mature enough to ask questions on what you donât know from those who know it and are in the line and share same faith with you (at most) and be cleared rather than going by your own wrong and presumed instinct.
I count it a privilege and still thank God for having experience in worldly music before being saved though, because what am about to unleash now can only come from experience, conviction, and revelation. In other words, if you have not been in worldly music before and being saved in Christ now, you are inexperienced to talk, or teach about it. Is not a matter of asking a fellow believer, or even your pastor, if he or she is not experienced, you canât be told and guided in the truth of the matter of music in relation to believeers, so listen to me, I will make it clearer, and simple. Just read through.
When it comes to beat, beat is as innocent as a virgin. What defines music in terms GENRE is the BEAT, and what defines it in terms of GODLINESS or WORDLINESS is the lyrics (wordings), in other words, lyrical content; beat is just a container which can carry good or bad music. This is because there is presently no genre of music that canât be used for godly or worldly music. Am carefully not using, CIRCULAR MUSIC because for the fact that a song talked not about God does not mean is ungodly and for the fact a song talked about God does not equally mean that that song is godly though music originated in heaven.
However, that is a topic to be posted next time.
That notwithstanding, when we talk of genre of music, we mean CLASSIC OF MUSIC, and this class or genre is determined by the nature of BEAT not LYRICS-WORD CONTENTS. Now, we have many genres of music and whether it is Gospel or Wordly(Circular as they ignorantly call it), it falls in the following genres:
Reggae, Rhythm & Blues(R&B), Blues, Jazz, High-life, Hip-hop, Pop, Rock, Country music, Soul, etc.
It is also worthy to note that these genres are now played and categorized in cultural, and contemporary dimensions. Eg., Afro Hip-hop which means, African Hip-hop, Afro-pop, etc.
Now, if you trace the origin of these genres of music, you will believe with me that they had little, or nothing almost to do with godliness. But today, donât we play reggae tone in our local churches? Donât we like the songs of Kirk Franklin-a Gospel âHip-hopâ musician? Donât we play High-life in our gospel crusades? Agape Love Band by Israel Anyanele, is it not Reggae? Donât we dance to the tones of some Gospel musicians such as Frank Edwards who is in Rock genre? Nathanael Bassey who is both in Jazz, pop, etc? And the now trending songs of Mercy Chinwo who is in Afro-Hip-hop, R&B? For the fact is gospel does not change the genre and vice versa. When I make music in the studio, I donât ask questions of lyrical content to make your beat, rather as you sing, we detect the genre, and you donât select beat as some think: your song tells the beat maker the genre and inspires him on how to make it.
Now weâve been shown our ignorance, I mean those who think in like manner, you can now calm down and make your own research if you donât believe me. I repeat, beat is amoral, not good, not bad. What makes it bad or good is the music you sing or compose on it. As a Record producer, I tell you the truth, and as an ex-wordly musician, I teach you with experience and as a believer and minister of the gospel by His grace, I tell you with conviction.
In submission, the difference in attributes or in title when it comes to definition of music is just the addition of description for instance, âHip-hop Gospelâ, âCircular Hip-Hopâ But this description has no place in the studio.
Finally, note that the title doesnât change the genre. So donât condemn beat.
Hope this is helpful? Feel free to shares.
