Senate President Godswill Akpabio Stated That The Increase In The 2024 Budget Is Verifiably Justified.

By Aina Rebecca (Swiss Student at Ogitech).

The President of the Senate, Goodwill Akpabio, stated on Monday that the increase in the 2024 Budget by the National Assembly from N27.5 trillion to N28.78 trillion is verifiably justified.

The Senate President also mentioned that the National Assembly will closely collaborate with the executive to monitor budget implementation.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the signing of the 2024 Appropriation Bill into law by President Bola Tinubu, the Senate President highlighted that the slight budget increase aims to address human capital development and meet the needs of Nigerians, especially in school feeding and addressing the security situation in the country.

Asked about the process, he said, It went very well. Happy New Year to all Nigerians! The President commended the National Assembly's hard work for the expeditious treatment of the budget.

He acknowledged the slight increase for justified reasons, emphasizing human capital development, school feeding, and security concerns.

The budget increased from 27 trillion to about 28-point-something trillion, and we are excited that we are all working in one accord for the benefit of Nigerians. We have returned the country to the January to December budget cycle, completing it by the 31st of December.

Myself and the Honourable Speaker are pleased with this sacrifice for national development.

Even though today is a public holiday, we commend the President for taking time out to return from his yuletide break and perform this important national assignment. We are confident that Nigerians will be the beneficiaries.

He mentioned that the National Assembly leadership has instructed all committees to start their work and emphasized the importance of monthly reports from ministers or MDAs.

Any minister or agency head found wanting will have to leave the administration.

Group Urges Akeredolu to Appoint Owo Indigene as Running Mate to Compensate For Loss.

By Aina Rebecca (Siwes student, Ogun State Institute of Technology Igbesa OGITECH)

A socio-cultural group, Imade Development Association (IDA), has requested Ondo state governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to consider an Owo indigene as his deputy to compensate for the loss of their son, Rotimi Akeredolu.

The group expressed concern about potential polarization along ethnic and political lines following Akeredolu's death and emphasized Owo's strong interest in presenting a candidate for the Deputy Governorship position.

Imade Development Association's Chairman, Segun Ogunbadeniyi, along with the Secretary, Femi Fadaisi, and Publicity Secretary, Julius Adesola, stressed that Owo's interests must be safeguarded in light of Akeredolu's passing.

Ogunbadeniyi stated, In our opinion, the joint ticket that expires in February 2025 is Owo/Ilaje. We do not understand any calculation outside of it. Whoever picks the ticket of APC or PDP next year can decide which zone produces the Deputy Governor.

The group cautioned against excluding Owo from the calculation until February 2025, deeming it unfair, inequitable, and potentially divisive in the political landscape.

They urged Aiyedatiwa to prioritize actions promoting peace and unity in the state, highlighting the polarization within the All Progressive Congress (APC), the legislative arm of government, and the people due to recent conflicts.

The group emphasized maintaining the ticket in honor of Akeredolu and called for measures that would restore harmony and unity in the state.

Media Criticism of My Policies Made Me Stronger, Says Edo Governor Obaseki.

By Aina Rebecca (Siwes student, Ogun State Institute of Technology Igbesa OGITECH)

BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki stated yesterday that media criticism of his policies and administrative style strengthened him as a governor, emphasizing the importance of a robust press for democracy to flourish.

Obaseki made these remarks during the 2023 Christmas Party with journalists at the Edo State Council Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

He highlighted the significance of criticism, viewing it as a constructive force that prompts self-reflection. Obaseki acknowledged the role of the press as pillars of his administration's success over the past seven years.

Reflecting on achievements during his tenure, he mentioned the restoration of value for the lives of Edo girls and women and a deliberate policy discouraging illegal migration. Obaseki expressed gratitude to the journalists, stating, You have been one of the pillars of the success of my administration.

In endorsing the professionalism of journalists, the governor emphasized the need for a strong, virile, and critical press in a democracy. He highlighted his approach to criticism, stating, I don’t see criticism as a bad thing... I sit back and reflect on your views.

Regarding the restoration of the Edo people, Obaseki noted the improvement from 2016 when he assumed office, emphasizing the transformation of the image of Edo women and the state.

He concluded by asserting, Today, if we have not achieved anything, we have achieved the Edo pride. The world now knows that the empire was not a fluke.

Nigerian Security Operatives Rescue 21 Kidnap Victims In Kogi State 48 Hours After Abduction.

By Aina Rebecca (Siwes student, Ogitech)

Security operatives in Kogi State successfully rescued 21 kidnap victims just 48 hours after their abduction on Thursday along the Ajaokuta–Itobe road.

Governor Yahaya Bello, praising the efforts of the security forces, reiterated a zero-tolerance policy for criminal activities in the state.

A statement by the governor’s media aide, Onogwu Muhammed, revealed that a joint team of security operatives, including the Nigeria Police, Civil Defence, and local vigilantes, executed the rescue operation.

The victims, primarily travelers, had been taken to an unknown destination within the dense forest around the Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Upon receiving the report, Governor Bello promptly directed security agencies and local vigilantes to take immediate action to free the captives and apprehend the perpetrators of this reprehensible act.

Governor Bello commended the security operatives for their rapid and effective response, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and security within Kogi.

This administration is committed to leaving no stone unturned in its relentless pursuit of keeping Kogi as one of the safest states in the country.

He also issued a stern warning to those with nefarious intentions and cautioned criminals against migrating to Kogi for illicit activities.

Nigeria Labour Congress Laments Over Lack of
Insecurity.

By Basanya Sulaimon (Siwes Student, Efon Poly)

The Nigerian Labour Congress lamented the rising state of insecurity, delays in wage implementation by some states, and economic hardships experienced in 2023. NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed these concerns in a New Year message he signed on Sunday, titled 2024 Can Be Better If…

Ajaero highlighted the government's failure to fulfill promises regarding the N35,000 national minimum wage agreed upon by the Federal Government and the NLC.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians in 2023, emphasizing the importance of evaluating the implementation of major agreements, such as the June 5th and October 2nd Agreements between the federal government and NLC/TUC.

Despite accusations of being settled by the government, Ajaero emphasized the NLC's commitment to leadership responsibilities, aiming for the right actions with expected results.

He criticized the government's unfaithfulness to agreements, including the non-implementation of the N35,000 Wage Award and the delays in the PH refinery project and National Minimum Wage Negotiation Council inauguration.

Ajaero addressed the exacerbation of divisions in the country, attributing it to politicians exploiting primordial fault lines during elections.

He expressed citizens' wounded confidence in the government due to policies contrary to their welfare, noting only sporadic progress in governance in some states.

The NLC President raised concerns about the escalating use of violence and propaganda in industrial relations, blurring the lines between electioneering and governance.

Government interference in trade unions and the attack on the NLC President were condemned, with suspicions of top-level involvement.

Highlighting the situation in Imo state, Ajaero criticized ongoing violations of workers' rights and interests, emphasizing the need for restitution in 2024.

He pledged collaboration with civil society partners to strengthen the civic space, ensuring effective governance and benefits for the majority.

Ajaero concluded by asserting that 2024 would be an interesting year, promising restoration for workers and urging private sector employers and government agencies to settle any outstanding payments.
