The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, has linked some members of the National Assembly to some contracts awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission, The PUNCH reports.

Akpabio, however, did not state if the lawmakers were directly awarded the contracts or they nominated the projects under their Zonal Intervention Projects, also known as constituency projects.

The former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on the NDDC, Mr Nicholas Mutu, who represents the Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency of Delta State, is among those linked by the minister with contracts.

The minister listed Mutu’s name against 74 projects, including various emergency road projects in Delta, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Rivers states.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had on February 3, 2020, arraigned Mutu before Justice Folashade Giwa-Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court in Abuja for alleged abuse of office and fraud involving about N320m.

Akpabio also linked the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi (Delta-North), with 53 projects, which included emergency repairs of Asue Street, Owa Phase 2; ldumuogbe Road via Ojemaye; Otolokpo College Road, Otolokpo; and the Police lshu Ani Ukwu Road, Issele Uku.

Other lawmakers that Akpabio listed projects against are Senator Matthew Urhoghide (Edo-South), six; James Manager (Delta-South), six; Samuel Anyanwu (Imo-West, 8th Senate), 19; and others simply identified as Ondo and Edo Reps.

The minister, however, did not provide the cost of the projects listed against the lawmakers’ names, while the value of contracts given to non-lawmakers had costs of various projects attached to them.

PUNCH also observed that contracts listed against the names of the lawmakers were not up to 60 per cent of the 266 on the list provided by Akpabio.

Non-National Assembly members are also on the list.

It was further observed that the minister copied the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

The House had on Thursday resolved to sue Akpabio for alleged perjury and defamation of the parliament.

Akpabio had on Monday, while appearing before the House Committee on the NDDC during an investigative hearing on the alleged illegal spending and mismanagement of funds, claimed that the commission awarded members of the National Assembly 60 percent of contracts.

BREAKING: AGAIN, FG REOPENS SCHOOLS, SETS DATE FOR WASSCE

The Federal Government has again order for the reopening of Secondary schools in the country, noting that academic activities will commence on August 4, 2020 for pupils in exit classes to sit for their examination.

When the news was gathered, the government equally noted that the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination will commence on 17th of August, 2020, noting that students will have two weeks to prepare for the exam organised by the West Africa Examination Council.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations, FMoE, Ben Goong on Monday.

The government announced the decision at the end of a virtual consultative meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education, Commissioners of Education of the 36 states, the Nigerian Union of Teachers, (NUT), the proprietors of private schools, and Chief Executives of examination bodies.

According to the statement, “stakeholders at the meeting agreed that the exit classes should resume immediately after the Sallah break, from the 4th of August, 2020 to enable them prepare for the WAEC examinations scheduled to commence from the 17th of August, 2020.

“The meeting also resolved that a passionate appeal be made to the Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and public spirited Nigerians for assistance to schools across the country to enable them fast track the preparations of safe reopening, as agreed.

“Another meeting is to be convened tomorrow between the Federal Ministry of Education and Chief Executives of examination bodies namely, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS to harmonise their examination dates, which will be conveyed to stakeholders expeditiously by the Federal Ministry of Education

Concrete barriers have been placed to block off the mainland inbound traffic at the Adeniji end of the Third Mainland Bridge.

This is in line with the partial closure for repairs of the bridge.

Speaking to newsmen in the early hours of Saturday, the Federal Controller of Works, Olukayode Popoola, said the Federal Government partially shut the bridge on July 24.

According to him, a diversion has been created for the contractor handling the repairs to commence work on the outward lane of the island.

He explained that the inward lane has been left open to enable motorists to ply the road with ease while going to work.

“In the morning when you are going to resume your work, right from Oworonshoki, you use the same line that you normally use to go and work.

“By 12 in the afternoon, we close this lane so you can now divert. We have created diversion as you can see it,” he said.

Speaking further, he appealed to motorists to cooperate by allowing the contractor and workers to carry out the rehabilitation work on the bridge.

While asking road users to obey the law enforcement agencies, Popoola noted that it is imperative to avoid any form of chaos while using the public asset.

He also reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to ensuring that the repairs are carried out within the six-month period.

Popoola’s comments come four days after the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, said the bridge will not be reopened until January 202.

Fashola, who confirmed this at a briefing in Abuja, called on motorists in Lagos to be patient with the repairs.

The minister explained that the maintenance of the busiest bridge in the country was aimed at replacing damaged components for a better motoring experience.

The maintenance is to be carried out on a length of 3.5 kilometres out of the 11.8 kilometres of the bridge.

*SCHOOL REOPENING:HOUSE OF REPS GIVE FRESH UPDATE ON WASSCE,EXAM DATE*

housemittee on Basic Education and Services has resolved to approach President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) on the need to fix a date for the 2020 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Rep. Julius Ihonvbere (APC-Edo), the Chairman of the Committee, expressed the resolution at the committee meeting with stakeholders in the education sector on Thursday in Abuja.

He said there was a need for stakeholders to be on the same page and to commence diplomatic efforts to get the other countries in the region on Nigeria’s side concerning the yet-to-be agreed examination date.

Ihonvbere said, “In the interest of the 1.6 million candidates that registered for the exams, there was a need to agree on a date for the regional examination as time was running out for the country.”

On his part, the Head of WAEC National Office in Nigeria, Mr Patrick Areghan, told the committee that it required time to print question papers and that other convoluted logistic considerations might come into play.

He explained that Ghana had wanted to have the examination in June because it is an election year in the country, but shelved it because of Nigeria.

Areghan added that it took a presidential directive for The Gambia to shelve its desire to have the examination before now

Nigeria should decide if it wants to give its candidates a COVID-19 exam certificate or a WAEC certificate in concert with the other countries.

"Getting parents to pay another set of fees might be difficult if the September date is missed; if the November option is considered, someone has to pick the bills,” he said.
