JAMB BEGINS 2024 DIRECT ENTRY REGISTRATION, ISSUES IMPORTANT NOTICE TO CANDIDATES

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has commenced the sale of Direct Entry nationwide and in selected foreign centres.

The registration process starts on Wednesday, 28th February, 2024, and closes on Thursday, 28th March, 2024.

The sale is open to foreign candidates desirous of tertiary education in Nigeria through the Direct Entry mode. Furthermore, the Board will continue to ensure a level playing field for all candidates irrespective of status.

The Board would not process candidatesā€™ application from all awarding institutions that have refused to honour several requests for the verification of their Aā€™level certificates presented by some candidates for the 2023 admission.

Candidates who are not awaiting results, must have uploaded their Aā€™ level qualifications, Oā€™level results and DE registration template at the point of registration as no DE candidates would be processed for admission until such claimed results are uploaded and verified by the awarding institutions on the Boardā€™s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) mail platform.

DE candidates, who at the point of registration are awaiting Aā€™level results of IJMB/JUPEB/NABTEB, must have uploaded their Admission Letter and Registration Template at the point of registration. Applicants with Cambridge certificates of pre-2018 examination year should visit Cambridge directly for verification.

This verification exercise may take up to 28 days (as specified by the awarding body) after which the verification result would be forwarded to the Board. The verification would be reflected on the e-Facility profile of the DE candidate. Statement of results (in lieu of certificate) is accepted for registration only within three years of the date of award.

The Board has also given a window of opportunity for upgrading from UTME to DE with a proviso for only candidates whose DE results have not been released at the point of UTME registration and who must have indicated at the point of registration that he/she is awaiting Aā€™level results. The particulars of which he/she must have supplied and contained in the uploaded registration template.

16,920 APPLICANTS JOSTLES FOR UNILORIN 2023 ADMISSION

Out of the 18,098 admission seekers who registered for the 2023ā€“2024 post-UTME test at the University of Ilorin, 16,920 presented themselves for the exercise that was held between February 19, 2024, and Friday, February 23, 2024.

In a statement contained in the weekly bulletin of the institution, the screening exercise, which was entirely computer-based, was held on the university campus between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day.

Speaking on the exercise, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Abayomi Olubunmi Omotesho, said that there were no recorded incidents of examination malpractice or impersonation.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor explained that the test was officially completed last Thursday, adding that Friday, February 23, 2024, was used for mop-up to accommodate candidates who were unavoidably unable to sit the test within the previously scheduled dates.

When asked about the prompt daily release of results to candidates, Professor Omotesho attributed it to the vision of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, to ensure that the university continues to conform with global best practices.

Professor Omotesho warned candidates to beware of scammers and advised them to only use the universityā€™s official platforms for information and communication.

Also speaking, the Director of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre, University of Ilorin, Professor Kamilu Rauf, expressed his satisfaction with the fact that no technical issue was recorded throughout the examination period.

Professor Rauf thanked the university management, under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for the support offered towards the successful conduct of the examination.

The Director, who is a renowned Professor of Mathematics, also commended the management of the university for ensuring strict compliance with examination guidelines at the CBT Centre by staff and students of the university.

He added that the Centre is also ready to conduct examinations for students of the School of Preliminary Studies from Thursday, February 29, 2024, to Friday, March 1, 2024, while examinations for undergraduate students would begin on Monday, March 4, 2024, at the Centre.

Professor Rauf assured that the Centre is also adequately prepared for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations to be conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

NLC DECLARES NATIONWIDE MASS PROTEST OVER ECONOMIC HARDSHIP

The Nigeria Labour Congress said it has put machinery in place for a two-day nationwide protest slated for February 27 and February 28, 2024.

The NLCā€™s National President, Joe Ajaero, said the protest would begin a week after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum it issued to the Federal Government which will expire on February 23.

Ajaero, who spoke during a briefing with journalists in Abuja, said the decision followed an emergency National Executive Council meeting on the state of the economy and matters related to insecurity in the country.

On February 8, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress gave a two-week ultimatum to the government to meet demands ranging from wage increments to improved access to public utilities and accused it of failing to uphold pledges to soften the impact of reforms.

Ajaero said the Federal Government should not flout the deadline of the 14-day ultimatum.

The organised labour lamented that millions of Nigerian workers are facing hunger, erosion of purchasing power and insecurity due to reforms that drove up inflation.

This followed President Bola Tinubuā€™s decision to scrap a popular but costly fuel subsidy last May and his administrationā€™s lifting of restrictions on currency trading, which more than tripled petrol prices.

UNIOSUN GETS INCREASED ADMISSION QUOTA FOR MEDICINE

The Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme of Osun State University has witnessed a substantial increase in its admission quota from one hundred (100) to two hundred (200), as approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

This information was obtained in a statement released by the Universityā€™s Public Relationsā€™ Officer, Ademola Adesoji, on Tuesday , 13th February, 2024.

UNIOSUN gets increased admission quota for medicine
Adesoji revealed that this information reached the Vice-Chancellor, Professor ā€˜Ayo Clement Adebooye, through a letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, dated Monday, 22nd January, 2024 and signed by the Registrar of the Council, Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi.

The letter partly read ā€œI wish to inform you of the Presidential directive through the Minister of State for Health of the approval for the increment of the quota of admission into the Medical Schools in Nigeria by 100%.ā€ The increment was borne out of a growing worry over the reduction in the number of Medical Doctors in the country, which led to the Federal directive.

Recall that the Council had previously increased the admission quota for the prorgramme barely a year ago from fifty (50) to one hundred (100) after granting approval for its full accreditation.

In response to this quota increment, the Vice-Chancellor commended the MDCN for its transparency in the evaluation process during the accreditation of medical programmes. He also lauded the Federal government for what he described as a well-conceived policy to address the shortage of doctors in the country.

Expressing his appreciation, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated the Universityā€™s stakeholders on this unprecedented growth. He emphasized the institutionā€™s commitment to providing high-quality medical education and contributing significantly to the development of the nationā€™s healthcare sector.

JAMB REGISTERS 1,072,122 UTME CANDIDATES, AFFIRMS REGISTRATION DEADLINE

As the JAMB 2024 UTME registration progresses to Week 4, JAMB has disclosed that about 1,072,122 candidates have so far been registered. This was contained in the weekly bulletin of the board. Prospective candidates are advised to ensure they register or complete their registration before the deadline as there may not be any extension

Meanwhile, the Ag. Director, Ibadan Zonal Office of JAMB, Mr. Olugbenga Akintola, while embarked on a tour of CBT centres in Ibadan to monitor the ongoing 2024 registration exercise reminded both candidates and the various CBT centres on the importance of full compliance with the directives of the Board, particularly with respect to ensuring that candidates are duly authenticated individually through their profile codes and ePINs as received on their mobile phones before registering them in order to guard against group registrations and mismatch of candidatesā€™ data.

It would be recalled that the Board had mandated all prospective candidates for the 2024 UTME to display their profile codes and e-PINs as vended from the Boardā€™s USSD code 55019 or 66019 on the mobile phones with which they had generated their profile codes. In the past, some schools, perhaps, out of ignorance or carelessness or through a combination of both, had muddled up candidatesā€™ vital information such as names, date of birth, state/local government of origin, among others. In many instances, such candidates had to bear the burden of filing applications for correction of data, which in many instances, are not granted.
