NFF appoints Finidi George as Head Coach of Super Eagles

The Board of Nigeria Football Federation on Monday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as Head Coach of the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles.

George, who spent 20 months as assistant to José Santos Peseiro before the Portuguese voluntarily left the post following the accomplishment of Africa Cup of Nations runner-up position at Cote d’Ivoire 2023, took charge of the squad in interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco last month.

His squad edged Ghana 2-1 in the first match, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars, but then lost 0-2 to Mali in the second game.

George, a member of the so-styled ‘Golden Generation’ that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia and emerged the second most entertaining team in Nigeria’s debut at the FIFA World Cup finals in USA the same year, won 62 caps for Nigeria, including featuring at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals. He also won gold, silver and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000 and 2002 AFCON tournaments.

The 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and Real Betis (Spain) forward, who made a scoring debut for fatherland in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Burkina Faso at the National Stadium, Lagos on 27th July 1991, also featured for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC in the domestic scene before heading to Europe. He assisted Rashidi Yekini (of blessed memory) to score Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in Dallas, USA on 19th June 1994.

George had actually scored the goal that took Nigeria to that FIFA World Cup debut, when he put Nigeria ahead against hosts Algeria in a crucial qualifier in Algiers on 8th October 1993. The match eventually ended 1-1 and earned Nigeria a ticket to the finals in America.

George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan respectively, in a little over five weeks.

The matches are must-win encounters, with the Super Eagles lagging behind in third place in Group C of the African campaign behind Rwanda and South Africa.

THE EXORBITANT CHARGES OF COMMERCIAL BANKS IN NIGERIA; A BROAD DAYLIGHT ROBBERY

N14.1 Billion! That’s how much was reportedly remitted by Nigerian Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) from exorbitant charges, taxes, and levies deducted from millions of bank accounts owned by Nigerians in 2023. The taxes which include commissions, VATs, overdraft fees, stamp duty charges, out-of-network ATM fees, insufficient fund fees, debit and credit transfer charges together make up an increasingly worrisome form of extortion many Nigerians lament as unethical, especially in the face of growing hardship.

“The rate at which the DMBs also known as commercial banks in Nigeria extort money from her customers is uncalled for,” an aggrieved citizen lamented, “ a N10,000 transfer is often received as N9,9xx thereby defeating the purpose of the wholesome transaction. The government must look into banks and financial institutions fleecing customers through excessive charges and unauthorized deductions.”

Citizens have continued to express displeasure over some of these charges like the one-off N50 stamp duty charge for every transaction above N100,000 which was designated as a revenue source for the Federal Government following the introduction of the Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) (Finance Act 2020). In the face of inflation, unemployment and economic crisis, such charges ought to be abolished by a considerate government given the existence of other tax avenues like the VAT. Now banks have made it worse with the injection of domestic extortion tactics under the guise of EMTL.

With these hard-biting charges in place and unchecked, commercial bank customers now find the practice of saving their hard earned money at the bank, counterproductive, as banks continue to double their annual turnover, compensate with suboptimal interests, whilst extorting these ludicrous charges.

Last November, the nation's President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, admitted to the growing hardship in Africa’s most populous nation even as over 50 million citizens continue to live on less than 1% a day. To put into perspective over 97% of the 70 million registered bank account holders in the country do not have up to N500,000 ($386) in their account according to the NDIC. This portrays the dire state of Nigerians in need of financial help, not helpless extortion by banks.

With no action in place, customers of different commercial banks still groan over excessive charges on their accounts. While financial institutions must maintain their operations by way of charges, the frequency, volume and intensity of these charges have become quite alarming. It portrays banks as hell-bent on massive enrichment at the expense of the poor customers.

Nigeria's Federal Government and Central Bank of Nigeria must look into excessive charges and illegal customer deductions by commercial banks operating within the country.

HOLY SACRILEGE: US CHRISTIANS FUME AS BIDEN DECLARES SEXUALLY PERVERTED “TRANSGENDER DAY” OVER HOLY EASTER SUNDAY.

Stamping his seal of authority on the perverted declaration on Good Friday—a sacred day marked by the reverence for the suffering and death of the Lord, Jesus Christ, by million of Christians around the world—US President, Joe Biden, declared today, Sunday, 31st of March, 2024 as “the Transgender Day of Visibility” in a direct contradiction to the sacred celebration of Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In a White House statement, the President claimed the attempt to conjoin the sacredness and purity of Easter with what many Christians and right-thinking citizens consider a “glorified moral depravity on steroids” will bring unity to America.

Long story short, it sparked outrage as it should.

From leading presidential candidate, Donald Trump, to house speaker, BennyJohnson, many Conservative politicians took turns to blast Biden for the intentional attempt to stoke divisiveness on Easter and gaslight Christians afterwards, for their reactions.

“The only thing you should be declaring is HE IS RISEN” Caitlyn Jenner slammed Biden on X, while Donald Trump Jr and Senator Tommy Tuberville called Democrats “a Satanic cult” and the trans movement “the new religion of the left” respectively.

“There is no length Biden and the Democrats won’t go to mock your faith, and to thumb his nose at God,” remarked Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Ironically, as a self-acclaimed Catholic, Biden’s transgender declaration in 2024, is believed by many as an intentional act to anger Christians and test for a much broader persecution of Judeo-Christian values in America, given that the next Easter celebration scheduled to fall on the 31st March is in the next 84 years.

To put into perspective, the UN international day of zero waste scheduled to be celebrated every 31st of March, was marked, this year, on the 27th of March in reverence for the sacredness of Easter and respect for Christians—a respect lacking in Biden’s provocative actions.

This year, Biden’s brazen attack on Christians extended even to the White House children's Easter egg art celebration dating back to 1878 in which Biden, this year, removed all religious connotations, stories and ideas about Christianity and Easter, in a bid to divest the competition from the primary reason behind the celebration.

Trump, in his reaction to the announcement, stated thus: “We call on Joe Biden’s failing campaign and White House to issue an apology to the millions of Catholics and Christians across America who believe tomorrow [today] is for one celebration only—the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

"And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?"Jesus answered, "The first is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." ~Mark 12: 28-31 (RSV)

These two commandments are the foundation of everything else that Jesus teaches. It is impossible to follow Jesus and obey his teachings if we do not first love God and love others. Even unto death, Christ loved His Father.
