The naira began the week on a losing note against the American dollar on Monday April 29, 2024 at the official window to trade at N1,419/$1.

This is according to data sourced from the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) window.

At the end of trading on Monday, the naira lost N19.88 against the dollar when compared to the previous exchange rate of N1,399.23/$1 on Friday, April 27, 2024.

The intra-day high and low recorded during the day were N1,451/$1 and N1,060 /$1 respectively, representing a wide spread of N391\$1.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, the University of Benin branch, said on Monday that its members may not resume academic activities on April 28 due to attacks on lecturers and management staff by students of the institution.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja will today (Monday) hear the appeal lodged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against the order of a Kogi State High Court which restrained the anti-graft agency from arresting the immediate-past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has stated that hotels, schools, and other establishments that accept payments in dollars from their customers are at risk of facing arrest.

The Chairman, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, said this in the agency’s publication called EFCC Alert on Monday, adding that action would be taken against individuals involved in the dollarisation of the economy.

According to him, the exception is if foreigners come in to transact business and the only means of transacting is their credit card and dollar but to charge local customers in dollars or other foreign currencies would no longer be allowed.

Eighteen members of the Edo State House of Assembly, on Monday, voted to impeach the deputy governor of the state, Philip Shaibu.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the NLC Political Commission Stakeholders meeting in Abuja, the Congress passed a vote of no confidence on the purported convention and the leadership that emerged from it.

Kwara Government says its order banning the production of charcoal in the state still stands.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Malam Shehu Ndanusa made this known while briefing newsmen in Ilorin on Friday.

“The law banning the production of charcoal in Kwara is still intact. Whoever is caught violating the law will be sanctioned accordingly”, he said.

The commissioner warned that illegal felling of trees for charcoal was impacting negatively on the environment, adding that government was committed to afforestation to preserve the environment.

The Federal Operations Unit, FOU of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, in Lagos, Friday said It confiscated smuggled cargoes valued at N2.9billion in the first three months of the year just as it apprehended 29 suspects for various trade infractions.

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, Dr. Faruk Abubakar has counselled nurses to steer clear religious controversy at work in a bid to avoid trouble.

Some Nigerian nurses practicing abroad were recently queried for encouraging patients to pray during their treatments in some hospital.

Speaking with newsmen at the 5th and 6th induction and oath taking ceremony 108 registered nurses of Osun State University in Osogbo, he said the ethics of the profession does not recognize religion as a basis for practice.

Represented by the Council’s Project Manager, Mr Olaniyi Filade, he encouraged the new inductees to be patriotic and contribute to the development of the health sector in the country rather running abroad for greener pasture.

The House of Representatives has begun investigation into alleged certificate racketeering by some officials of Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies involved in alleged certificate racketeering with Nigerian students.

Rep. Abubakar Fulata, Chairman, Joint Committee on Certificate Racketeering, vowed to confront such a menace in tertiary institutions during its sitting in Abuja.

He said certificate racketeering could cripple healthcare system and various sectors of the economy if allowed to go unchecked.

Fulata said the House mandated its Committees on University Education, Interior Foreign Affairs, and Youth Development to investigate the matter and report back.
