The Governor of Anambra State, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has shared his view as a professor of economics regarding the new Nigerian minimum wage.

He said, "I am not against paying my workers a minimum wage of 250k or any agreement between the federal government and organized Labour. But the fact is that Nigerians think the minimum wage is only for government employees. They don't know that the private sector is included. If you have five workers or more, any agreement between the federal government and organized labor is the minimum salary you must pay your workers.

Right now in Nigeria, small and medium enterprises are the largest employers, employing over 45 million Nigerians. If certain amounts are implemented, believe me, a lot of these small businesses will close. Last time, I had discussions with some SMEs in Anambra. The first person was the proprietor of a school in Anambra, who had about 36 workers, including drivers and cleaners. I asked him what his opinion on this minimum wage was. He replied that the government should pay workers whatever they demand, as things are very hard. I then told him that he is also included, that if 250k is the minimum wage, that should be the minimum salary he pays any of his workers. Then the man replied, 'No, they should not agree with that amount, or else he will close the school or increase the school fees by 300%, which will cause everyone to leave the school.'

I also interviewed a poultry farmer and a water bottle company owner. None of them knew what the minimum wage was about; they only thought it was for the government.

As I said earlier, Anambra State can pay their workers any minimum wage they agree on, but believe me, in the next year, Nigeria will regret it. Nigeria should remember the Udorji Award when workers' salaries were doubled, but after a few months, they realized they were better off with the old salaries.

So, the federal government and organized Labour should think carefully and understand the implications of paying a minimum wage above your per capita income. The consequences will be terrible for Nigerians, especially the workers," the governor concluded.

University Of Abuja Releases Cyprain Igwe’s Result After Sen. Umeh's Intervention

Cyprain Chukwuemeka Igwe, a final year student of the Department of Sociology, University of Abuja, has successfully received his Statement of Result, allowing him to proceed on mandatory National Youth Service.

This was made possible following the swift and timely intervention of Senator Victor Umeh, OFR representing Anambra Central Senatorial District.

Recall that Cyprian Igwe, a native of Ichida, Anambra State; was on the 26th of May 2023; rusticated by the University of Abuja over allegations of distributing a press release opposing the increase in school fees.

On Thursday, July 27th, 2023, Senator Victor Umeh presented Igwe's case to the Senate President, HE Senator Godswill Akpabio. Senator Umeh's petition highlighted the injustice Igwe faced and sought a resolution. The Senate President directed the petition to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for further investigation. The Committee’s thorough examination, coupled with Senator Umeh's persistent advocacy, led to a positive outcome.

Then on Wednesday, March 6th, 2024; The Senate after reviewing the findings of the committee; directed the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja to reinstate Cyprian Chukwuemeka Igwe as a bona-fide student of the University. The Senate also mandated the University to restore Cyprian Igwe access to the students portal and recommend him for mobilisation of the NYSC programme, having received an apology letter from him on the 3rd November 2023.

The University of Abuja, upon receiving the directives of the Nigerian Senate, reversed Cyprain Igwe’s rustication decision. They released his Statement of Result, clearing the way for him to proceed with his National Youth Service.

This favorable resolution highlights the significant role played by Senator Victor Umeh in addressing and rectifying the injustice faced by his constituent. His rapid and effective intervention ensured that Cyprain Igwe received the justice he deserved. Thanks to Senator Victor Umeh's prompt and dedicated intervention, Cyprain Igwe’s academic and professional trajectory has been set back on course.

This case exemplifies the impact of responsive and compassionate legislative advocacy in rectifying individual grievances.

If We Share Anambra Monthly Revenues Nobody Will Get Up To ₦‎2,500 – Soludo

The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, says if all Anambra earnings are shared individually with the residents of the state, nobody will get up to N2,500.

Soludo, who spoke at The Platform, a programme by Lagos-based church, Covenant Nation, to mark the 2024 Democracy Day on Wednesday, said he shares the pains of Nigerians in these challenging times.

“As a person, for example, I deeply feel the pains of Nigerians at these challenging times especially the over 100 million Nigerians who are multidimensionally poor. Times are hard,” Soludo said.

“Sometimes, I just wish that I can give every resident of Anambra maybe a million naira each to ameliorate the hardship that we have, but the reality is that if we get our entire revenue in a month, both from FAAC and from our IGR and put it on the table, call all our estimated 8.5 million residents and share it, nobody will get up to N2,500.”

The governors said it is from the same money that can’t go around for N2,500 each that he will still have to pay salaries, gratuities, build roads, and invest in health and education among others.

He said they recently recruited over 8,000 new teachers and over a thousand medical personnel who would still need to be paid from the same revenue.

Soludo warned that Nigeria faces stringent fiscal quagmire and even technical solvency challenges because its tax revenue is one of the lowest in the world.
