The Amazing Story of Pythagoras and His Famous Theorem
A long time ago, around *570 BC, a boy named Pythagoras was born on the Greek island of Samos. From a young age, he was very curious about numbers, shapes, and the mysteries of the world. He loved asking questions like“ Why does this happen?” and How can I prove it?”*
As he grew older, Pythagoras traveled widely to learn. He studied with priests in Egypt, mathematicians in Babylon, and philosophers in Greece. Everywhere he went, he gathered knowledge about numbers, geometry, music, and even the stars.
Pythagoras believed that “everything in the universe can be explained by numbers.” For him, mathematics was not just about solving problems—it was a way to understand life and nature. He even discovered that musical sounds followed mathematical patterns, which showed how deeply numbers were connected to harmony.
But his most famous contribution is what we now call the Pythagoras Theorem He discovered that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the longest side (the hypotenuse) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides:
a²+b² = c²
This theorem became one of the foundations of mathematics and is still taught in classrooms all over the world today.
Pythagoras also started a school in Italy called the Pythagorean Brotherhood where students lived, studied, and practiced a way of life based on mathematics, discipline, and self-control. To them, numbers had secrets, powers, and meanings far beyond ordinary counting.
Though Pythagoras lived more than 2,500 years agohis ideas remain alive. His work laid the foundation for geometry, influenced philosophers like Plato, and continues to inspire mathematicians, scientists, and students everywhere.
