NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT PARTNERS AEDC ON "LIGHT UP NIGER" PROJECT TO IMPROVE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY.

Niger State Government and the Abuja Electricity Development Company AEDC have come up with an initiative that will improve the electricity supply to residents of Niger State.

The initiative code name "Light Up Niger 2024" would be a collaboration between the State government and the AEDC to ensure a steady power supply to Nigerlites.

This was brought to the fore when the Farmer Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago received the AEDC delegation led by its Chief Operations Officer, Eng. Chijioke Okwuokenye at the Government House, Minna.

Farmer Governor Umaru Bago described the initiative as a welcome development because Niger State is host to four hydro dams and the dams contribute about 60% electricity in Nigeria.

He also observed that power supply is key to development especially as the State is moving into an industrialization and processing zone.

The Farmer Governor expressed optimism that the "Light Up Niger" project will also proffer solution to the metering challenge in the State.

Farmer Governor Umaru Bago disclosed that the Electricity Act has been domesticated in the State and the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission has been created.

He further stated that the necessary paperwork for the Regulatory Commission will soon be completed so that the State can start generating and distributing its own power.

The Chief Operating Officer of AEDC, Eng. Chijioke Okwuokenye explained that the "Light Up Niger" project when it takes off, will pave way for greater things to come as the whole scope is to come up with the best measures that will improve and sustain electricity supply to Niger State.

He commended the support of the Bago-led administration through the supply of transformers to communities saying that the private sector needs such support for survival and assured that the Company is willing to continue to partner with the State Government for the desired result.

Recently the State Government described as unacceptable the continuous erratic and epileptic power supply in the State and demanded for about 24 hours power supply or the State will withdraw from the AEDC to join another Distribution Company.

The situation improved immediately after that decision by the State Government which has now brought about the "Light Up Niger" initiative.

Governor Umaru Bago remodeled Minna Airport and renamed it Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport.

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has successfully remodeled the long-dormant Minna Airport, which had been undergoing remodeling for over a decade by the federal government. The airport, closed due to the cut-off runway, has now been overhauled and transformed into the impressive Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna.

Upon assuming office, Governor Umaru Bago wasted no time seeking approval to take charge of the airport's project, which had languished for over 11 years. With swift approval, he immediately awarded the remodeling contract, leading to the completion of the runway and the construction of a new terminal within a remarkable 90 days.

Previously without a passenger terminal, the airport now boasts a fully furnished Domestic Terminal, aptly named after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, scheduled for commissioning on March 11th, 2024.

Furthermore, construction of the long-abandoned Hajj Terminal has commenced and is expected to be operational within three months, reviving Hajj operations after a two-year break.

These monumental projects, executed in collaboration with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), underscore the commitment to national aviation standards. The construction of Cargo and International Terminals will be completed within 12 months, further strengthening the Airport's status as a transportation hub.

Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including an Instrumental Landing System (ILS) and Distance Measuring Equipment, Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna, will now be the alternative to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

This Airport is so important to Governor Umaru Bago’s agricultural revolution program in Niger State. With a functional Airport and a world-class agro-processing zone with an initial capacity of about 2,000 hectares of land where vegetables, fruits, dairy, and other livestock activities will take place, it will be easy to fly agricultural goods anywhere in the world.

Governor Umaru Bago's ambitious vision for Minna Airport is a great step towards improving the air transport sector and harnessing the economic potential of the state for national development.
