The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has winged 12 new combat pilots from the Basic Flying Course-20 at the 403 Flying Training School, Kano.

This was according to a statement on Thursday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet.

The CAS charged the pilots to justify the efforts and resources invested in their training by contributing their best towards sustaining the successes recorded in the various theatres of operation within the country.

Abubakar said that the NAF had continued to conduct independent and joint operations aimed at decimating the criminals and denying them freedom of action as well as shaping the operational environment in the various theatres.

He said the efforts could only be sustained with the injection of new and vibrant pilots to add energy and bite to the operations.

Abubakar said the new combat pilots were being injected at a time when NAF had immensely benefitted from the Federal Government’s determination to provide necessary platforms and equipment in the fight against terrorism, insurgency and other forms of criminality.

According to him, the acquisition of new platforms comes with the attendant consequences on manpower, training, and operating costs.

This challenge is further exacerbated by the anticipated arrival of an array of new platforms such as the M-346, AH-1Z, A-109 Trekker, and the remaining T-129 ATAK helicopters.

“For NAF to bridge the manpower gaps currently experienced, a three-year training plan to commence from January 2024 must be sustained amid the availability of funding.

“It is in view of this projection that the graduation of the Basic Flying Course 20 is gladdening, as it serves to bridge the pilot deficiency gap,” The News Agency of Nigeria quoted him as saying.

The air chief further reminded the newly winged pilots of the current security environment, which, he said, had remained fluid and unpredictable due to threats posed

Sokoto State Government has explained that the deduction of salaries of its employees in the state civil service was for loan repayment by the affected staffers.

The government noted that the affected workers have taken multiple loans from financial houses.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance in the State, Abba Muhammed Mualledi, while speaking with newsmen in his office on Wednesday, said the affected staff members in the state had collected loans from one or two financial houses.

According to the PS, “the affected staff members in the state civil service had collected loans from more than one financial house during the previous administration in the state.

The affected financial house, upon my assumption of office as the permanent secretary in the ministry of finance, wrote a letter demanding a refund of their loans from defaulters.

“From our investigation, the money that was deducted from their salaries in the last six months by the previous administration was not remitted back to the affected financial houses, and that is what necessitated the current issue on the ground.”

The permanent secretary further explained that the ministry is already holding a meeting with the salary department on how to address any of the anomalies as well as regulate the payment accordingly.

“I met with the salary department to discuss how to tackle all these anomalies, and the committee will sit with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress and the affected financial houses in the state.”

He further explained that the ministry is working with all financial houses in the state to harmonise records of loans to regulate loan acquisition by civil servants in the state.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Thursday affirmed the victory of the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Sule of the All Progressives Congress the winner of the election, while David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party came second.

But the state election petition tribunal led by Justice Ezekiel Ajayi in a split judgment held that based on evidence from the various polling units, Ombugadu had the majority of valid votes at the election

But Sule appealed the judgment and asked the appellate court to set it aside.

Delivering judgment on the matter on Thursday, the court expunged from its records the evidence and exhibits from PWs 5, 6,7,8,12,13,20, and 21 which the tribunal relied on.

Reading the lead judgment, Justice Uchechukwu Onuemenam, held that the statements of the witnesses were not front-loaded.

The court noted that Section 285(5) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, Section 132(7) of the Electoral Act 2022, and Paragraphs 4(5) (6) and 14(2) of the First Schedule to the Electoral Act, state that written statements on oath must be filed alongside the petition within the simulated time.

Where a trial court admitted and acted on an illegally inadmissible evidence, it is the duty of the appellate court to ensure that such illegally inadmissible evidence is expunged, ” she held.

According to her, the remaining statements and evidence from PWs1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 22 cannot sustain the judgment of the tribunal.

Also, the court ruled that the tribunal was wrong to have deducted 1,868 votes from the governor’s votes based on the allegation of over-voting in four polling units.

“A party alleging over-voting must present voter registers in the affected polling units, BVAS machine, and Form EC8. The petitioners merely dumped their evidence on the tribunal without showing how over-voting occurred , “she said.

The appellate court also faulted the decision

No fewer than 83 Nigerian scholars will be departing for Morocco under the Bilateral Education Agreement under the Federal Ministry of Education.

Speaking at the departure briefing, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, noted that the selection of the scholars was in line with the renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Mamman also noted that the ministry has further increased the number of its development partners with many of them now offering scholarships to Nigerians.

He said, “Your selection as scholars is part of a broader plan of deepening the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, which ensures that brilliant Nigerians, especially those that cannot afford to study programmes that are not readily available in Nigeria, are supported to get necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies that would be useful in Nigeria’s development agenda.

"I am happy to inform you that in spite of the global economic meltdown, the number of our development partners has increased and many of them now offer scholarships to Nigeria. The active countries include Hungary, China, Russia, Algeria, Romania, Morocco, Serbia, Mexico, Egypt and Venezuela, others not very active include Macedonia, Poland, South Korea, Greece, Japan and Turkey.

“In order to reciprocate their good gestures, Nigeria also offered scholarship awards to China and Romania in the past and hopes to reactivate the gesture as the country and others indicate interest. As you prepare to travel to a foreign land today, many of you might be leaving your parents for the first time, while virtually all of you would be leaving for a foreign land.

“I therefore need to advise you not to see this as a freedom and you begin to do things that would be a disgrace to you, your parents, and the country. Nigeria is investing a lot in you and expect that the returns of the investment will manifest in your coming back to help move your nation forward.

"Living in a foreign land is very different from

Troops of the Joint Task Force Northwest Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) have rescued 31 kidnapped victims in Sokoto State.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has tasked members of his cabinet to prepare for a detailed budget defence at the state House of Assembly.

The governor also advised his aides to ensure that drafted executive bills were forwarded to the legislature timely.

Adeleke said this in a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Wednesday in Osogbo, the state capital.

He said that full cooperation was paramount with the legislature to speed up budget processing in line with the assembly’s timetable.

The statement read, ”We have a state to govern. We have a five-point agenda to deliver. There is no room for distractions. All cabinet members must get their work together by ensuring successful budget hearings at the assembly.

”Also, let the relevant House committees have all the required information to vet and approve your proposals.

“I have full confidence that the legislature will understand the fiscal and economic considerations behind the 2024 budgetary proposals.”

According to him, his administration is aware of innovative ideas being introduced that may necessitate new laws or amendments to existing ones.

”Let me direct our MDAs with planned executive bills to speed up the internal processes.

“Three of such bills are very dear to the goodness of our state. The bill to domesticate the Nigerian Startup Act should be forwarded to the assembly without further delay. That bill holds the key to boosting and diversifying our state economy,” he stated.

He said that the Osun electricity market bill was important to the state with a resolution reached to move faster to get the bill passed into law without delay.

”Also, of similar importance is the bill to harmonise the state tax system. Our government wants to put an end to multiple taxation and expand the tax base with a lower tax rate,” he added.

Adeleke, however, directed the Justice Ministry and all affected Ministries, Departments and Agencies to work closely to ensure bills get to the State Assembl

Gunmen were said to have attacked the Adamawa State Police Headquarters, Jimeta, Yola North Local Government Area, in the early hours of Wednesday, sending residents of Yola into panic.

According to Daily Trust, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the attack, but said things were under control.

Nguroje said, “The attack was repelled, but the identities of those behind it was unknown.”

The newspaper quoted a source as alleging that the attackers were military personnel on a revenge mission, following the alleged killing of a military officer by the police.

Although the newspaper said it could not independently verify if military personnel were involved, but the police said investigations were ongoing to ascertain the cause of the attack and those behind it.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that there was a faceoff last Friday between officials of the EFCC and some personnel of the Nigerian Air Force at the Kaduna Zonal Command of the anti-graft agency.

The NAF personnel were said to have stormed the commission’s office in an attempt to release their colleagues earlier arrested by EFCC operatives for allegedly attempting to forcibly release fraud suspects from custody.

The anti-graft agency noted that its operatives arrested five suspects at an eatery located in the Barnawa area of the state on Monday following credible intelligence about their alleged internet-related fraud activities.

A statement released on Friday by EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, gave the names of the suspected fraudsters as Favour Itung, Rachael Ande, Zuleiman Haruna, Abubakar Ismaila and Solomon Olobatoke.

The EFCC, however, noted that after the sting operation, six military personnel who witnessed the operation at the eatery stormed its Kaduna Command and attempted to forcibly release the arrested fraud suspects but were subdued and detained over the security breach.

According to the anti-graft agency, the intruders are four Air Force personnel:

The Office of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State has faulted the publication on the website of the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency attributing the sum of N2,017,840,000 for the provision of items including rechargeable fans, rechargeable lights, and fridges to the deputy governor’s office.

It said the correct amount was N2,017,840.

A leaked internal memo signed by Director, Finance and Account, Tola Ekemode, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary in the office of the deputy governor, and obtained by The PUNCH on Monday, described the procurement agency’s claim and the online story with the headline, ‘Open letter on selected public procurement by LASG in the period April – Sept 2023’, which has been trending since last weekend on social media, as total misrepresentation of facts.

The memo dated November 20, which described the open letter as untrue, mischievous, fake, and unfounded, was addressed to the Director General, Lagos State Public Procurement Agency.

The deputy governor’s office further urged the agency to take prompt action in addressing the issue by giving the general public a true account of what was approved for the Office of the Deputy Governor.

The memo read, “Our attention has been drawn to an online story with the Headline, ‘Open Letter on Selected Public Procurement by LASG in the Period April to September 2023.’

“According to the news item as reported on X (formerly Twitter), the Office of the Deputy Governor was reported to have awarded the sum of N2,017,840,000 for the provision of supply items (rechargeable fans, rechargeable lights, and fridges). It was also reported that the office spent N30,000,000 monthly for outreach to indigents by the Wife of the Deputy Governor and the same amount for a monthly empowerment programme by the Wife of the Deputy Governor.

“The Office of the Deputy Governor wishes to state in unequivocal terms, for your immediate action and the attention of millions of readers, that the report is untrue, mischiev

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, had tweeted in September that an “autopsy has been concluded” and the police were “awaiting result.”

In October, the then Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, named prime suspects linked to the death of the singer, where he further disclosed that Mohbad vomited and developed goosebumps after he was injected three times by a nurse, Feyisayo Ogedemgbe, on September 12, 2023.

Some of the suspects were subsequently charged to court.

The state Police Command last Friday, however, released singer Azeez Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley and Balogun Samson, known as Sam Larry, after the duo met their bail conditions. They were arrested as part of an investigation into Mohbad’s death after videos of assault against the late singer surfaced online.

The Lagos State Police Command has said the autopsy report of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba aka Mohbad, conducted two months ago has not been given to them.

Today, Tuesday, November 21, 2023, makes it two months since the co**se of the late Mohbad was exhumed and an autopsy commenced to unravel the cause of the death of the singer.

Mohbad’s death on September 12 sparked controversies in Nigeria and beyond which prompted the police to set up an investigative team to determine what led to the singer’s demisme.

When asked by one of our correspondents on Monday on the release of Mohbad’s autopsy report, Hundeyin disclosed that the command had yet to get the report officially.

Hundeyin said, “The autopsy report has not been given to us. Some people have been carrying rumours that it’s ready. It’s one thing for it to be ready, it’s another thing for it to be given to us officially – that we would receive and sign a copy that we have received it. So, we don’t work with rumours, we work with facts.”

Nigerian artiste, Bella Shmurda, had on Saturday appealed to the police to release the remains of Mohbad.

Taking to his X account late Saturday, Bella expres

The Niger State House of Assembly is set to enact a law that will provide six months maternity leave for nursing mothers in the state.

The Deputy Speaker, Afiniki Dauda, stated this on Sunday during a training session on etiquette, protocol, security, and empowerment for female political office holders in Minna, the state capital.

She said the bill was important to allow women to get the required rest after childbirth and to enhance the health of the nursing mother and her child.

The all-women event organised by the wife of the governor of Niger State, Fatima Bago, was aimed at enhancing women’s participation in governance and equipping them with the required business and life skills for them to fit into their new roles as political officeholders and wives of elected and appointed political officials.

The training was a follow-up to an earlier one organised by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in Abuja.

Dauda, in her remarks, said the six-month maternity leave would enable working-class nursing mothers to fully regain their energy and bond sufficiently with their children during the period.

Also speaking, Mrs Bago asked the women to leave a modest lifestyle devoid of extravagant character.

Resource persons at the event dwelt on several issues around gender-based violence, etiquette, security, and general conduct of women that would protect their integrity and safety as well as those of their spouses.

Colombian superstar Shakira will pay a fine of over 7.3 million euros ($7.98 million) as part of a deal with Spanish prosecutors to avoid trial for tax fraud, a Barcelona court said Monday.

Under the deal, announced at the start of what would have been the trial of the 46-year-old singer, Shakira also agreed to receive a three-year suspended sentence.

‘Reaches Deal’
Under the deal, announced at the start of what would have been the trial of the 46-year-old singer, Shakira agreed to receive a three-year suspended sentence and to pay 7.3 million euros ($7.98 million) in fines.

Prosecutors had accused the superstar of defrauding the Spanish state of 14.5 million euros ($15.7 million) on income earned between 2012 and 2014, charges Shakira had denied, saying she only moved to Spain full-time in 2015.

The singer, who wore a pink suit and sunglasses, did not speak to the throng of reporters as he entered and left the Barcelona courthouse, but in a statement, she said she had agreed to settle for the sake of her two sons, Milan and Sasha.

“I need to move past the stress and emotional toll of the last several years and focus on the things I love – my kids and all the opportunities to come in my career, including my upcoming world tour and my new album,” she said in the statement issued by her lawyers.

“I admire tremendously those who have fought these injustices to the end, but for me, today, winning is getting my time back for my kids and my career.”

The case centred on how much time the singer, whose hit singles include “Whenever, Wherever” and the 2010 World Cup song “Waka Waka”, spent in Spain between 2012 and 2014.

Spanish authorities alleged Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll — dubbed the Queen of Latin Pop — spent more than half of that period in Spain and therefore should have paid taxes in the country.

They say she moved to Spain after her relationship with former FC Barcelona star defender Gerard Pique became public in 2011, but maintained off

The Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress clashed on Sunday following the sacking of Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja.

In a judgment on Sunday, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Elphreda Williams-Dawodu ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Mutfwang and issue a fresh one to Nentawe Goshwe of the APC whom the court declared as the valid winner of the March 18 governorship election.

Mutfwang was the third opposition governor to be sacked by the Court of Appeal within three days.

Last Thursday, the appellate court nullified the election of another PDP Governor, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, declaring that the governorship election in the state was inconclusive.

The following day, the same court invalidated the election of the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, of the New Nigeria Peoples Party

Worried by the serial losses suffered by their governors and lawmakers at the courts, the PDP Deputy Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, declared that the recent court judgments were not in tandem with the law.

But the Director of Publicity for the APC, Bala Ibrahim, riposted that it was people who did not understand how the judicial process works that were accusing both the APC and the Presidency of trying to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

Mutfwang of the PDP had scored 525,299 votes while the candidate of the APC, Goshwe polled 481,370 votes in the March 18 governorship election in the state.

Goshwe challenged the victory of Mutfwang at the tribunal claiming that the governor was not validly nominated and sponsored by his party.

He also said there was non-compliance with the Electoral Act in the election.

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had dismissed his petition for lacking in merit, but Goshwe headed to the appellate court.

However, Justice Williams-Dawodu, in the lead judgment, set aside th

According to a statement signed by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Victor Olaiya, the student was allegedly murdered in her room at a private hostel residence at the Dapson area, Offa in the state.

“Kwara State Police Command through the Divisional Police Headquarters, Offa received information on November 16, 2023, at about 1720Hrs that an HND 1 student of Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State, named Toyin Bamidele was allegedly murdered.”

The incident, the command said, occurred at Dapson Extension area where the 23-year-old Toyin studying Food Technology at the polytechnic was resident adding that “she was found lying in a pool of blood on the premises of her rented apartment.

"On receipt of the information, a team of investigators led by the Divisional Police Officer, Offa Division, was dispatched to the scene of the incident. Preliminary investigation at the scene revealed some marks of violence on the face and neck regions of the body.

The body was removed to Wale Clinic and Hospital, where the deceased was certified dead by a medical practitioner. The body of the deceased has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

“One suspect has been apprehended in connection with the case. He is presently helping the police in investigation”, the statement said.

The police commissioner who said the command would not relent in her onerous duty to ensure the safety and security of the citizens and their property reiterated the determination of the command to get to the root of this crime.

“The command wishes to advise members of the public to be conscious and vigilant during this period, as evil men are prowling, looking for what and who to devour.”

The Appeal Court, Abuja Division will on Sunday deliver judgment in the appeal filed by the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Plateau State, Nentawe Goshwe, challenging the victory of Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

This comes about a week after the three-member panel led by Justice Elfrieda Williams-Dawodu reserved judgment on the appeal.

Goshwe is challenging the victory of Governor Mutfwang on the ground that the latter was not qualified to have contested the election because he was not validly sponsored and nominated by his political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to run in the March 18 2023 polls.

READ ALSO: Tribunal Upholds Caleb Mutfwang’s Election As Plateau Governor

He insisted that the PDP lacked structure and was not qualified to sponsor any candidate in an election, alleging that Mutfwang’s poll was not conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act and therefore did not win the majority of lawful votes cast during the election.

In the election, Mutfwang on the platform of the PDP polled 525,299 votes while Goshwe polled 481,370 votes.

The APC candidate’s suit was, however, dismissed by a three-member panel of a tribunal headed by Justice Rita Irele-Ifijeh, in a unanimous decision, for lacking in merit.

Dissatisfied with the judgment, Goshwe appealed the tribunal judgment.

In his notice of appeal, the appellant and his political party – APC, told the court that there was over-voting and non-compliance with the 2022 Electoral Act during the 2023 governorship election in the state.

On his part, counsel to the PDP, Emeka Etiaba, SAN, prayed the court to strike out the appellant’s appeal for lacking in merit.
