Dear Cyber Security Wannabe, want to be a SOC Analyst? Here are the 10 Things You Need to Do.

1. Education - it doesn't matter how you get your education, just get it. Learn from some type of structured learning.

2. Strong IT Foundation - Understand operating systems and IT fundamentals including networking.

3. Learn Cyber Security fundamentals - gain the concepts in threat intelligence, incident response, vulnerability management, risk assessments, etc.

4. Gain Technical Skills - Get hands on experience with labs, SIEMS, IDS, and others.

5. Certifications - CySA+, Security+, Google Cyber Security, or others. Grab a certification or two and get some street credit.

6. Stay Informed - Stay informed of what is going on in the industry. Be able to talk about the latest breaches, industry news, and so on. The more you know, the more valuable you are.

7. Networking and Collaboration - Go to events, use social media, gain network connections. It is not about who you know, but who knows YOU.

8. Hands on Experience - You've done your own labs, not go to some CTFs, internships, or volunteer work. Get some experience under your portfolio.

9. Soft Skills - Learn to communicate. If you can communicate effectively, it will make a huge difference in the interview process.

10. Entry Level Position - If you'd done all of the above, it's time. Don't be afraid of job descriptions that say 3 or 4 years required. Submit an application anyhow. If they see something in you, you have a chance.
