1. The Internally Displaced Persons camps (IDPs) is not the place for uncoordinated pet peagentary projects where you hand over empty exercise books to unlearned kids.

2. The IDPs is not a place where you go take your birthday shots with candies hanging loosely on those innocent lips as you try to make a point come later on socials.

They have names. They have stories. They have dignity. They have Human Rights!

How can you help?

√ Go there relate with them. If you like sit there to hear their stories and play with the kids. Call your local State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to know how best you can reach out to them.

√ Get an organisation doing viable work with them donate to their course. They will put your money to better use.

√ Most importantly, whatever you do don't go there because you want to ridicule them by taking their pictures in exchange for some candies. That is a ridicule and God can punish you for it.

Listen to this episode of with Dr. Isaac Olufadewa on his Mental Health Intervention Series at the idps. He shared some insightful stories about the mental health challenges faced by children in IDPs across Nigeria and how bodies and government can help.

We know what r**e victims go through. Unfortunately, we know too well because as much as we hate to know, the victims are our friends, our sisters, our children and our mothers. Sometimes, they are us. What we don’t know however is, what exactly lies in the mind of the ra**st? I mean what are they thinking? Revenge, pleasure, a show of power or just drunkenness?

What exactly is in the mind of a child ra**st who r**ed a girl in her primary 6, got her pregnant and is still by and large in the neighbourhood parading the street?

This is the story of Kumasuun Ahmadu’s student at Shangev-ya who got r**ed and was left to tend for the child resulting by herself even when everyone including the community leaders and the family knew who the ra**st was! It is a sequel to the Ahmadu’s rural educational intervention story. In this episode, we explored the role of culture in the prosecution of r**e cases in Nigeria.

20 years after refugees from Congo return back to their fatherland, starting all over was impossible because they had no home anymore. Atleast not untill Evariste Mfaume started the project that has provided land to about 19000 returnees

This is the first part of the Shange-vya story.

In December 2019, I received a call from Ahmadu, he was coming to Benue State, and not just Makurdi, the capital city, but to Shange-vya; The little village in Benue State, where he served two years back as a National Youth Service Corps. That was a first. No one comes back here after service, especially not when they had served in a village in the time of crisis.

Ahmadu heard of the fates of some of the kids he had taught as a corps member at Ikpila Iorzua in Shange-vya. Some had been sent out of school, some were getting married off as child brides, while others had gone to big towns as labourers. One in particular, his favourite kid, had been r**ed, and rumour had it that she was about to be given off for marriage to the ra**st. That was when he shoved all his anger into his luggage and took a 16 hours journey back to Benue state from Lagos.

We trust you are keeping safe in this uncertain times? Its been hell of a week for us , but we managed to pull this last series of the IDP stories.

For me, I know there is a kind of purging of emotions, no matter how sad your story is, in knowing that someone is listening. For those fleeting moments, in sharing your hurts, how be it bad the experiences, you feel proud of it. Of the fact that you are a survivor. Whether by chance, by sheer luck, or by grace. You just know you are a damn lucky survivor and, if possible, all the world should come take survival lessons from you.

On the last series of the 5 series parts on IDPs, we air the story of Blessing Iorhuna who had a one on one encounter with herdsmen and recounted her experience of losing a husband and son at it.

Yesterday at madeofchaosng, we celebrated children day and our highlight story was on the IDPs. We feature the story we once covered about Doowese, a four year old as told by her mother.

It is not the best tale in the world, or a happy tale. But it is the reality of many children out there who seems like they have no future.
70% of the IDPs are children.
Among the 70%, how many percent do you think grow up into adults? Doowese, a four year old went missing one cool morning, just like many before her, and that was the end.
