The Forgotten Children of Our Streets: A Call for Compassion and Action

As i walk through the streets, I saw a reality that broke my heart and filled my mind with troubling questions about our collective humanity. Hundreds of children roam the streets some sent are Fura to seek for knowledge ( Almajiri ), others abandoned or orphaned due to various circumstances ranging from economic hardship, or the tragic realities of broken families.

These children, forced to fend for themselves, mingle during the day with others who enjoy the love and care of nurturing families. They laugh, play, and for a fleeting moment, their lives seem normal. But when evening comes, the difference between them becomes painfully clear.

As dusk sets in, the children with homes run back to warm meals, loving arms, and safe shelters. Meanwhile, the street children are left behind. Their homes are the cold pavement, their beds are the doorsteps of locked shops, and their blankets are thin rags or the unforgiving harmattan winds.

These children endure unspeakable horrors. They witness crimes and atrocities, their innocence eroded by the darkness of the night. Many fall prey to predators who exploit their vulnerability, teaching them evil, corrupting their young minds, and subjecting them to unimaginable abuse.

As they grow older, what kind of society will these children inherit? Will they harbor the same love and compassion that was denied to them? Or will they see the world as a cruel place that deserves no mercy just as none was shown to them?

This cycle of neglect and abandonment is one of the roots of our societal unrest. The children we ignore today may grow into adults who bear the weight of hatred, anger, and vengeance.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. These children need us, our compassion, our support, and our action. It is a collective responsibility to ensure no child feels unwanted, unloved, or abandoned.

Imagine a Nigeria where every child is given a chance to thrive, where no child sleeps under the stars out of desperation, and where society nurtures its young instead of turning its back on them.

It starts with everyone. Let’s not just walk past these children but pause, engage, and find ways to make their lives and our communities better.

If we want peace, we must sow seeds of kindness. If we want a better society, we must nurture its future. Together, communities can break this cycle and build a nation where every child has a reason to smile.
