CUSTOMS TO AUCTION SEIZED PETROL AT N400 PER LITRE

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the seizure of 15,325 litres of petrol to be auctioned off at ?400 per litre.

The National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, ACG Hussein Ejibunu, said the petrol, when auctioned, will ease transportation hardship during the festive season.

Ejibunu announced during a press briefing held at the Customs Training College, Ikeja, on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

He highlighted the recent seizure of 613 Jerrycans of petrol with a Duty Paid Value of N27,565,000 by operatives in the Lagos-Ogun axis.

“This operation has been on since 27 May 2024 and has yielded positive results, as the CGC has urged the operatives to continue sustaining the tempo until the activities of these economic saboteurs are stamped out of this country,” he said.

The Coordinator disclosed that, as directed by the CGC to auction the seized PMS, a court condemnation order and all legal processes have been finalised by the office of the Legal Adviser.

“On this note, the CGC has directed Auctions of the seized product to members of the public at the rate of N10,000 per 25 litres. This will ease the transportation hardship during this festive period,” he concluded.(Channels TV)

JIMMY CARTER, FIRST US PRESIDENT TO VISIT NIGERIA, IS DEAD

Jimmy Carter, the 100-year-old former US president and Nobel peace laureate who rose from humble beginnings in rural Georgia to lead the nation from 1977 to 1981, has died, his nonprofit foundation said Sunday.

Carter had been in hospice care since mid-February 2023 at his home in Plains, Georgia — the same small town where he was born and once ran a peanut farm before becoming governor of the Peach State and running for the White House.

Carter died “peacefully” at his home in Plains, “surrounded by his family,” The Carter Center said in a statement.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love,” Chip Carter, the former president’s son, said in the statement.

Jimmy Carter was the first US President to visit Nigeria, doing so from March 31, to April 3, 1978. He also visited Liberia on the same trip.

Carter was the oldest living ex-US leader and the nation’s longest-lived president — an outcome that seemed unlikely back in 2015 when the Southern Democrat revealed he had brain cancer.

But the US Navy veteran and fervent Christian repeatedly defied the odds to enjoy a long and fruitful post-presidency, after four years in the Oval Office often seen as disappointing.

During his single term, Carter placed a commitment on human rights and social justice, enjoying a strong first two years that included brokering a peace deal between Israel and Egypt dubbed the Camp David Accords.

But his administration hit numerous snags — the most serious being the taking of US hostages in Iran and the disastrous failed attempt to rescue the 52 captive Americans in 1980. He also came in for criticism for his handling of an oil crisis.

In November of that year, Republican challenger Ronald Reagan clobbered Carter at the polls, relegating the Democrat to just one term. Reagan, a former actor and governor of California, swept into office on a wave of staunch conservatism.

Active post-presidency

As the years passed, a more nuanced image of Carter emerged — one that took into account his significant post-presidential activities and reassessed his achievements.

He founded the Carter Center in 1982 to pursue his vision of world diplomacy, and he was the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless efforts to promote social and economic justice.

He observed numerous elections around the world and emerged as a prominent international mediator, tackling global problems from North Korea to Bosnia.

Carter, known for his toothy smile, said basic Christian tenets such as justice and love served as the bedrock of his presidency. He taught Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist, his church in Plains, well into his 90s.

In recent years, he had received various hospital treatments, including when he revealed in August 2015 that he had brain cancer and was undergoing radiation.

US Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia, who is the pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church where Martin Luther King Jr preached, wished the Carter family comfort as the former president entered hospice last year.

“Across life’s seasons, President Jimmy Carter, a man of great faith, has walked with God,” Warnock wrote on X, then Twitter.

“In this tender time of transitioning, God is surely walking with him.”

In April 2021, President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, met with the Carters at their home in Plains.

The White House later released a photo showing the couples smiling together, although only Rosalynn was seen by the press outside, bidding the Bidens farewell while using a walker.

Rosalynn, Carter’s wife of 77 years, died on November 19, 2023 at age 96.

The former president, who looked frail, poignantly appeared at her memorial service in a wheelchair, with a blanket on his lap bearing their likenesses.

Carter is survived by the couple’s four children, three sons and a daughter. (Largely based on an AFP report)

IBADAN STAMPEDE: NAOMI’S MOTHER LAMENTS EX-QUEEN’S DETENTION, APPEALS TO TINUBU

Mrs. Funmilayo Ogunseyi, the mother of Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife, has called on President Bola Tinubu and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in her daughter’s legal troubles.

Silekunola is among three individuals taken before the Iyaganku Magistrate Court in Ibadan in connection with a tragic funfair stampede that resulted in the death of 35 children last week.

The court has since ordered the remand of the accused in prison on charges bordering on conspiracy, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities at the event.

In an emotional video that has gone viral, Mrs. Ogunseyi pleaded for mercy, asserting that her daughter’s intentions were purely humanitarian.

According to her, Naomi had organised numerous outreach programmes over the past decade to assist the needy, elderly, children, and pregnant women across Nigeria.

She lamented that her daughter’s goodwill had inadvertently led to the stampede and subsequent deaths.

“Have mercy on me. Mothers have mercy. Come to my rescue. Don’t let my life be destroyed. My child only came to Ibadan to help the needy; this was not her first time. We have travelled across the country helping children and the vulnerable. I sympathise with the families who lost their children; it was never our intention. Please, don’t let Naomi be imprisoned—she is innocent. She only came to show compassion,” Ogunseyi said tearfully.

She recounted the events leading to the tragedy, noting that crowds had gathered hours before the programme’s scheduled start time of 10 a.m.

According to her, the stampede began around 6:30 a.m., long before Naomi arrived at the venue.

Mrs. Ogunseyi further revealed that Naomi, who was reportedly unwell, fainted during police interrogation and remains in custody despite her fragile health.

“The programme was meant to begin at 10 a.m., but people started arriving the day before. By 6:30 a.m., the crowd became uncontrollable. Naomi wasn’t even there yet. I received a call about the chaos while still asleep. My phone number was on the event flyer, so I was the one contacted. Naomi, her elder brother, and I immediately went to the police station to report the incident, but she was detained and later charged with murder,” Ogunseyi narrated.

Breaking down in tears, Ogunseyi appealed to President Tinubu and other influential Nigerians to intervene. She claimed that her daughter’s predicament was orchestrated by “powerful persons.”

“They have taken my child to prison. The court was full of policemen. I don’t know where else to turn. They say her ordeal is an ‘order from above.’ Please, I beg those in power to release her. She is not a killer; she came to help. Naomi is fragile and sick. President Tinubu, I beg you, come to our aid,” she implored.

Mrs. Ogunseyi also expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased children, emphasising that the tragedy was unintended.

SOKOTO VILLAGERS ACCIDENTALLY KILLED AS NAF BOMBS LAKURAWA TERRORISTS

A Nigerian Air Force airstrike, intended to neutralize Lakurawa terrorists, marred Christmas celebrations in Sokoto State on Wednesday as it mistakenly hit two communities in Silame Local Government Area of the state, killing several residents.

This is just as terrorists attacked a military base in Borno State with armed drones, injuring five members of the troops.

Eyewitnesses’ accounts said the accidental bombing in Sokoto claimed the lives of at least 10 villagers and left several others wounded.

The affected communities, Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, are located near the Surame forest, a known hideout for the Lakurawa sect and bandits.A resident of Silame, Malam Yahya, told our correspondent that the airstrike occurred around 7am on Christmas Day, disrupting what should have been a peaceful holiday.

He said no fewer than 10 villagers were killed with several others sustaining varying degrees of injuries during the airstrike aimed at the terrorists.

The Chairman of Silame Local Government Area, Abubakar Daftarana, confirmed the attack and expressed shock at the devastation.

“The villagers were sitting peacefully when the bombs started dropping on the communities. They were innocent and peace-loving people who had no criminal record.

“It is too early to confirm the number of people either killed or injured because we are still assessing the development,” he said.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Sokoto State Police Command, ASP Ahmad Rufa’I, declined comments on the matter, saying it was not their operation.

On its part, the Nigerian Air Force promised to investigate the fallout of the airstrike.

NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, stated that the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence and surveillance.

However, Akinboyewa assured that the force would investigate claims of civilian casualties.

“The airstrikes were conducted based on credible intelligence from multiple sources, along with confirmatory aerial surveillance. Nevertheless, reports of possible harm to civilians will be thoroughly investigated and we will update you appropriately,” he said.

Also, the Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma said military operations were conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions.

In a statement on Wednesday, Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullah, Coordinator, Joint Media Coordination Centre, Operation Fansan Yamma, said the targets struck in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa were associated with the Lakurawa group.

He said, “However, it is crucial to clarify that all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions.

“This rigorous process is particularly important when targeting groups like the Lakurawa terrorist organisation, as it aims to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.

“Given the serious nature of these operations, the public is urged to rely on confirmed information to prevent misinformation and unnecessary panic.

“There is a significant risk that terrorist groups may attempt to undermine military successes through media disinformation, necessitating caution concerning unverified claims, especially in the ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry.

“Importantly, the targets struck in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa have been positively identified as associated with the Lakurawa group, reinforcing the justification for the military action taken.”

Borno attacks
JubileeFM learnt on Wednesday that the insurgents launched an attack on Forward Operating Base located in Wajiroko area of Damboa Local Government in Borno State with a drone around 3pm on Tuesday.

Scores of the troops were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries at a duty post following the attack.

Multiple local sources who did not want to be identified, however, claimed that some soldiers may have died in the attack.

“We heard a sound from the base and at a point, smoke was seen in the hair, the way it looked, someone or people must have died in the attack,” a source claimed.

While the military is yet to confirm the attack, efforts to reach the spokesman of Operation Hadin Kai, Lt Col. A.Y. Jingina, proved abortive as he neither picked nor returned calls.

OGUN GOVT EMPOWERS 150 PERSONS LIVING WITH DISABILITY

Ogun State Government through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has empowered about 150 People Living With Disabilities, PWD, in the state.

The empowerment was part of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities themed, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

Items distributed at the event were Deep Freezers, Grinding Machines, Generating Sets, Clippers, Brail Machines, Walking Sticks, and Wheel Chairs among others.

The Ministry’s Commissioner, Adijat Adeleye said the essence of the empowerment was to reaffirm the commitment of the present administration of inclusion and equity for persons with disabilities and ensure a significant impact in their lives.

“As we commemorate this year’s Disability Day, I want to assure you that, Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration remains steadfast in its commitment to prioritising the needs of all persons with special needs”, she said.

Earlier in her address, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Adejumoke Adewole, urged PWD to invest in themselves, acquire needed skills for self-development, get new ideas and embrace technology as part of the requirements to thrive in today’s world.

She reiterated the Ministry’s continued commitment to take every necessary step to support their growth and success.

Speaking on the year’s theme, the former Chairman of the Nigeran Medical Association, NMA, Dr Kunle Ashimi, advised PWDs not to belittle themselves or be intimidated by their status but see themselves as the ones who could hold higher positions, noting that leadership is not by physical appearance but by brain, wisdom and intelligence.

In their separate goodwill messages, the state Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities, JONAPWD, Micheal Ebohor and Olori Aminat Matemilola, appreciated the state government for prioritising the welfare and well-being of PWDs by celebrating them, giving them job opportunities, among other things, so that they could be able to provide for their families and be self-independent.

AUTO CRASHES IN NIGERIA CLAIM MORE LIVES THAN TERRORIST, BANDIT ATTACKS – FRSC SECTOR COMMANDER

Kano — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Commander, Umar Matazu, revealed that road traffic accidents in Nigeria cause more fatalities than terrorist and bandit attacks.

During a courtesy visit to the new leadership of the Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Tuesday, Matazu highlighted the high number of fatalities resulting from road crashes, compared to those caused by terrorist or bandit-related violence.

Matazu emphasized the need for greater media support in raising awareness about road safety and promoting adherence to traffic regulations. He pointed out that the number of deaths caused by road traffic accidents far exceeds the number of fatalities from terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities.

“There is no way you have an attack killing more than 10 people, but in a traffic crash, you can have more than 40 people killed. From October until now, the number of people killed in road traffic crashes is higher than those killed by terrorists or bandits,” he stated.

He appealed to journalists to help spread messages about better road usage practices, as illiteracy and ignorance contribute to many of the road safety challenges. Matazu noted that passengers also have a role to play by speaking out when drivers are behaving recklessly, as they are often the victims in road accidents.

The FRSC has acknowledged that traditional public enlightenment campaigns at motor parks have become less effective, and is now exploring other methods, such as town hall meetings with all stakeholders, to engage and educate the public on road safety.

The Chairman of the Kano NUJ Council, Suleiman Dederi, represented by Vice Chairman Mustapha Gambo, assured the FRSC of the council’s full support in its ongoing road safety efforts. He also commended the long-standing cordial relationship between the NUJ and the FRSC.

WORKS MINISTRY BUDGETS N2BN FOR VEHICLE PURCHASES FOR SSAS IN 2025

The Ministry of Works has proposed a budget of N2 billion for the purchase of official vehicles for Senior Special Advisers (SSAs) in the 2025 fiscal year.

This proposal is included in the 2025 budget currently before the National Assembly for scrutiny and approval.

President Bola Tinubu presented the 2025 budget, titled “Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity,” to legislators in Abuja last week.

Another sub-head, “Provision of Operational/Safety Vehicles,” includes a proposal of N120,000,000 (One Hundred and Twenty Million Naira).

Additionally, the budget allocates N42,670,000 (Forty-Two Million Six Hundred and Seventy Thousand Naira) for a “Visibility Programme/Media on Federal Government Roads Construction” for ongoing projects.

Furthermore, N10,000,000 is earmarked under the Economic Recovery Growth Programme (ERGP) for the “Rehabilitation of Boreholes and Tanks at the Minister’s Block” to provide water for the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja, for the 2025 fiscal year.

CHRISTMAS: EFCC BOSS URGES NIGERIANS TO EMBRACE A CORRUPTION-FREE FUTURE

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called for a corruption-free Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of embracing values such as integrity, truth, and liberty in the fight against corruption.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Olukoyede urged Nigerians to align with the ideals of light, joy, hope, and truth that Christmas represents, which he believes are crucial to achieving a zero-tolerance approach to corruption.

Olukoyede highlighted the significant progress made by the EFCC over the past 18 months, attributing this success to the unwavering support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He also extended appreciation to the judiciary for strengthening the EFCC’s resolve, acknowledging their essential role in the anti-corruption fight.

Olukoyede wished all Nigerians a Merry Christmas, stressing that the collective efforts of all stakeholders are pivotal in realizing a prosperous and corruption-free nation.

He said, “I deeply believe in the prospects of our nation for growth and development. We can make Nigeria greater if we embrace the values of light, joy, hope, truth, and liberty that Christ brought to the world, which are significant pathways to integrity and zero tolerance for corruption.

“The Christmas season is an opportunity to activate these possibilities.

“Nigerians can see clearly that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to tackling corrupt practices in our midst. The strides of the EFCC could not have been possible without his active support and courage.

“We appreciate the professionalism, commitment, integrity, and courage of our Justices and Judges, who are greatly strengthening the EFCC’s anti-corruption efforts. With their collaboration, greater strides will be made in the coming year.”

The Governor made the announcement on Tuesday in Makurdi, stating that the holiday will begin on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, and end on Monday, January 6, 2025.

However, he emphasized that essential services must not be disrupted during the holiday period.

“As we celebrate the blessings of Christmas in anticipation of a prosperous 2025, I encourage everyone to imbibe the spirit of unity, love, and peace. Let us remain steadfast in our collective efforts to build a better and greater Benue State,” Governor Alia concluded.

‘IT SHOULDN’T BE BIG DEAL,’ COMEDIAN AY LAMENTS BEGGING FELLOW MEN TO PROMOTE MOVIE

Actor and filmmaker Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as AY Comedian, has voiced his frustration over what he perceives as a lack of support from his male colleagues in the Nigerian film industry.

In a post on social media following the release of his latest movie, The Waiter, AY expressed his disappointment in the lack of mutual encouragement among male actors.

“And I repeat, ‘WEY TIN MAN DO MAN?’ Begging your fellow male actors to join you in promoting your film shouldn’t be a big deal. Especially when I have always been doing the same for everyone,” he wrote.

The comedian also cited the challenges filmmakers face when actors fail to fulfill promotional commitments despite contractual obligations.

“Do you know how frustrating it is to pay actors who end up promoting other films and abandoning the one that they are in… EVEN with signed contracts?” he added.

However, Comedian AY clarified that his remarks were not directed at women in the industry, praising their hard work and consistent support.

“My last tweet has nothing to do with the hardworking women who are winning in the industry as they all have direct my support and encouragement to date. MEN SHOULD ALSO SUPPORT MEN,” he concluded.

STATE OF THE NATION: TINUBU’S ECONOMIC REFORMS, A NECESSITY – ONDO REP MEMBER, OJOGO

Hon. Donald Ojogo, the federal lawmaker representing Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency of Ondo State in the House of Representatives, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms as essential steps toward Nigeria’s prosperity.

Ojogo commended President Tinubu’s courage in initiating the reforms, stating that only a leader with boldness and vision could embark on such ambitious measures. He noted that while the reforms may have temporary negative effects, they are necessary for long-term national growth.

“As lawmakers, especially in the House of Representatives, we are not unmindful of the short-term effects of these very necessary measures aimed at achieving economic prosperity and growth for Nigeria.

“Every country in dire need of economic redirection like ours cannot avoid the kinds of reforms currently underway. Like childbirth, the pains and effects that accompany such reforms are temporary and lead to positive results.”

He acknowledged the burden borne by citizens, particularly those most affected by the reforms, but emphasized that lawmakers are committed to mitigating these impacts.

“We feel the impacts even in multiple ways as representatives of the people. But we will not shy away from our responsibility to ensure that the suffering is alleviated. We believe that the reforms are not just necessary but desirable for the nation’s future.”

Ojogo further urged Nigerians to have faith in the reforms, adding that his colleagues in the legislature remain supportive and are actively addressing misconceptions about the policies through constructive engagements.

In the spirit of the season, Ojogo distributed ₦53.6 million to his constituents to provide relief during the Yuletide. Beneficiaries included disarmed ex-militants, political leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, and other stakeholders across the Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency.

A statement by his Chief of Staff, Oladeji Ebisemiju, highlighted the lawmaker’s dedication to improving the lives of his constituents through financial support and infrastructural initiatives.

Each of the 22 wards in the constituency received ₦500,000.

Ward Chairmen, Women Leaders, and Youth Leaders were given ₦50,000 each.

APC LG Chairmen, Secretaries, and Women Leaders received between ₦100,000 and ₦1,500,000.

Security stakeholders and disarmed ex-militants received ₦6.35 million collectively.

Youth Councils, education groups, and traditional rulers also benefited.

Ojogo emphasized the importance of love, kindness, and generosity during the festive period, encouraging unity and mutual support within the community.

Expressing hope for the future, Ojogo reassured his constituents that their expectations would be met:

“We are yet at our desired destination, but our collective resolve and resilience give us hope for brighter days ahead.”

He urged the people to remain steadfast in their faith and prayers, noting that with God’s guidance, their challenges would be overcome.
