Hope for Nigerian workers as Tinubu picks date to announce new minimum wage.

There is hope in sight for Nigerian workers as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu picked next week to unveil a new minimum wage in the country.

Comrade Festus Osifo, the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), made this known during an appearance on ChannelsTV’s “Politics Today” program on Tuesday evening, September 19, 2023.

TUC had given the federal government a two-week ultimatum to address its demands or risk industrial action from workers across the country.

Osifo noted that the minister of labour, Simon Lalong, told them he had met with President Tinubu and the minister of finance, Wale Edun.

Osifo said Lalong told the union that the issue of wage had been reviewed adding that President Tinubu would speak on the matter in the coming days.

“The minister of labour told us that he had an audience with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the minister of finance and had reviewed the issue of wage award. But the president asked them to fine-tune the issues before he makes the announcement,” the TUC president said.

“The minister told us all these issues would be streamlined but because the president has travelled we should give him an extra two weeks. We said no; we don’t have an extra two weeks to give. After more discussions, he said the president would make proper announcement next week.”

Osifo noted that the union had engaged the federal government on the palliatives released to states.

“We are going to monitor distribution of palliatives in states to make sure the scheme is implemented appropriately. We want to see the template of the implementation which is why we engaged the federal government on this issue. We also raised issues around taxation and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas),” the TUC president added.

The current minimum wage is N30,000 and the organised labour unions including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are demanding over 200 percent increment.

Tinubu appoints Peter Obi’s running mate’s brother Hakeem Baba-Ahmed as Special Adviser.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed the spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, as the special adviser on political matters in the office of the vice president, Kashim Shettima.

Baba-Ahmed is the elder brother of Datti Baba-Ahmed, vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25 election.

Baba-Ahmed announced the development in a post on Monday on his official X page.

He said now is not the time for fence-sitting or criticism and urged Nigerians to pray for him and the country.

“It is time to make it public that I have accepted the call to serve as Special Adviser (Political) to the VP, ,” he said.

“This is not the time for fence-sitting or criticism when you can be useful in turning the country round. I am honored and humbled. Please pray for me & Nigeria.”

Baba-Ahmed served as chief of staff to Bukola Saraki, former senate president, from 2017-2019.

Confusion as UAE denies lifting visa ban on Nigeria travellers.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has contradicted claims by the federal government that it has lifted its visa ban on Nigerian travellers.

A CNN report on Friday, September 15, 2023, quoted an official of the UAE as saying the visa ban on Nigerians is still in effect so far.

“There are no changes on the Nigeria/UAE travel status so far,” the official told CNN.

CNN said the source asked not to be named “because he is not authorized to speak to the media”.

The UAE said in a notice last October it will no longer issue visas to citizens from Nigeria and 19 other African nations. It did not provide further details. Obtaining a 30-day tourist visa was relatively easy until the UAE abruptly stopped issuing visas to Nigerian nationals.

Flights between both countries were stopped last year after Dubai’s Emirates Airline suspended its operations in Nigeria citing trapped revenues.

The carrier said it could not access and repatriate its funds amounting to $85 million withheld in Nigeria.

Earlier this week, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu met with UAE leader Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi where both men “finalized a historic agreement,” according to a statement released by the Nigerian government.

The government said in the statement that the agreement paved the way for the lifting of the visa ban, including the immediate resumption of flights between both countries.

“Furthermore, by this historic agreement, both Etihad Airlines and Emirates Airlines are to immediately resume flight schedules into and out of Nigeria, without any further delay,” a statement by Nigeria’s presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said.

However, a statement by the UAE government later Monday said both leaders had during the meeting, “explored opportunities for further bilateral collaboration” with the hope of “reinforcing ties between the UAE and Nigeria,” but did not mention lifting the visa ban or flights restarting.
