Breaking News: Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Granted ₦500m Bail in ₦80bn Fraud Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted a ₦500 million bail to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who faces allegations of an ₦80 billion fraud. Justice Emeka Nwite presided over the ruling on Friday, setting stringent conditions for the bail.

As part of the conditions, Bello must provide two sureties who are required to swear to an affidavit of means and own properties within Abuja. The title documents of these properties will undergo verification by the court's Deputy Chief Registrar to ensure compliance.

The former governor pleaded not guilty to a 19-count charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), primarily centered on allegations of money laundering.

During the proceedings, EFCC counsel Kemi Pinheiro withdrew an earlier application seeking to move up the arraignment date, which Justice Nwite had granted.

This development marks a significant step in the legal process involving one of the highest-profile financial crime cases in recent memory. The court will continue to deliberate on the charges in the coming weeks.

Breaking News: You Are a Land Grabber, You Will Return Those Lands You Stole,’ Adeyanju Blasts Wike

Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has labeled the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as a "land grabber" amidst ongoing controversies over demolitions and land reallocations in Abuja.

In recent weeks, Wike has faced sharp criticism for ordering the demolition of what he calls illegal structures and revoking land allocations within the FCT. The minister claims these actions are necessary to eliminate security risks and reclaim government-owned lands. However, Adeyanju alleges that Wike is reallocating the lands to his loyalists and cronies.

In a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Adeyanju stated that Wike is "too small" to stop landowners from reclaiming their properties. He accused the minister of emulating practices that even previous FCT ministers could not achieve.

“All the land the land grabber is stealing in Abuja will be collected back,” Adeyanju wrote. “Even Northerners who were FCT Ministers couldn’t steal Abuja land, is it now villager of Obio/Akpor wearing fake designers and looking like a clown that will steal Abuja land? Wike is too small.”

The accusations come as Wike doubles down on his actions. On Thursday, the minister addressed the criticisms, dismissing allegations of blackmail and reaffirming his commitment to the demolitions.

“There are so many land grabbers, some of us have come to put our foot down and let heaven fall,” Wike stated. “It’s even better that heaven comes down now so that we will not be fasting to go to heaven.”

While Wike insists his actions are in the public’s best interest, Adeyanju and other critics argue that the demolitions and land revocations are politically motivated and disproportionately impact vulnerable residents.

The escalating tension highlights the divide between government policy and public sentiment, leaving many Abuja residents in limbo as they await clarity on the future of their properties.

Releasing Nnamdi Kanu Key To Restoring Peace In South East – Hon. Obinna Ichita |

Hon. Obinna Ichita, former Abia State lawmaker and Country Director of the German Initiative for Knowledge Transfer eV, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to facilitate the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as a critical step toward addressing insecurity in the South East.

Ichita, who recently held a series of meetings with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at the Department of State Services (DSS) Headquarters in Abuja, argued that Kanu’s release could help restore peace and stability in the region.

“The release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would contribute in no small way to the cessation of hostilities in the South East. It would also allow security operatives to distinguish between genuine agitators and criminal elements, thereby enhancing public safety,” Ichita said.

Ichita emphasized that dialogue, rather than force, is the best approach to resolving the crisis. He pointed out that even long-standing global conflicts are eventually resolved through negotiations, and Nigeria should not be an exception.

“Wars, even when fought, end with negotiations. It is smarter to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes through dialogue. Modern democracies thrive on peaceful conflict resolution,” he noted.

Hon. Ichita called on South East political leaders to engage more actively with the Federal Government, stressing that a coordinated approach involving the President’s intervention could lead to sustainable peace.

Criticizing the silence of South East leaders, Ichita questioned why they have not taken steps to seek a resolution to the crisis through a presidential audience.

“Why are South East leaders quiet while their home burns? What is stopping them from approaching the President to secure a peaceful resolution? Their inaction raises serious concerns,” he remarked.

Ichita further noted that the worsening insecurity has disrupted economic activities and caused fear among citizens, with many canceling trips to the region during the festive season due to threats of kidnappings and attacks.

Ichita appealed to President Tinubu to take the lead by authorizing a process for Kanu’s release and initiating discussions aimed at resolving the social and political issues fueling unrest.

“The release of Mazi Kanu would portray President Tinubu as a unifier and strengthen Nigeria’s image as a country capable of resolving its challenges internally. It is a step that would benefit not only the South East but the entire nation,” Ichita asserted.

He also stressed that delaying such an intervention could be counterproductive, as it might be perceived as politically motivated rather than a genuine effort for peacebuilding.

Ichita concluded by drawing parallels to Rwanda’s post-genocide recovery, emphasizing that Nigeria could achieve similar progress by fostering unity and addressing its challenges through dialogue.

“If Rwandans can rebuild their nation after 1994, Nigerians can do it too. Let us talk about the causes of our problems instead of fighting over them,” he said.

As insecurity continues to plague the South East, Ichita’s call highlights the urgent need for leadership, dialogue, and decisive action to restore peace and stability in the region.

Breaking News: Dele Farotimi Sent Back to Prison as Bail Ruling is Adjourned to December 20

Embattled human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has been remanded in prison as the Chief Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti adjourned the ruling on his bail application to December 20, 2024.

Farotimi, who has been at the center of a legal dispute with Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afe Babalola, appeared in court on Tuesday for his bail hearing. He arrived at the court premises in a police security van, accompanied by correctional officers, at approximately 10:00 am.

The court’s decision to delay the ruling has sparked reactions, with Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), expressing his displeasure on social media.
"The ruling on ’s bail application was today adjourned till December 20. Dele Farotimi has been sent back to prison for the next 10 days. See what begging has done? ," Sowore posted on his X handle.

Farotimi was arrested in Lagos State by officers of the Ekiti State Police Command, following a defamation lawsuit filed by Chief Afe Babalola. The allegations stem from claims that the lawyer made defamatory statements about the legal luminary.

The case has gained national attention, with civil society groups and supporters advocating for Farotimi’s release and raising concerns about the handling of his arrest and detention.
