COVID-19 IN NYSC CAMPS: Amid the third wave of COVID-19, no fewer than 275 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps have tested positive for the virus in 12 states, findings by Saturday PUNCH have revealed.

The PUNCH had reported that 103 prospective corps members tested positive for COVID-19 in Ogun (35), and Gombe (25), Plateau (22), and Taraba (21) in the past few days.

Further investigations by our correspondents showed that a total of 172 prospective NYSC members also tested positive for the virus in eight other states, namely Osun (38), Cross River (33), Akwa Ibom (31), Edo (17), Ekiti (17), Bauchi (16), Sokoto (14), and Delta (six).

AKWA IBOM STATE

In Akwa Ibom State, the Commissioner for Health, Prof Augustine Umoh, on Friday, confirmed to one of our correspondents that 31 prospective NYSC members had tested positive for COVID-19 in the state.

“There are 31 of them who have tested positive,” he said without giving the details.

CROSS RIVER STATE

Also, the Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, disclosed that 33 prospective corps members in the states had tested positive for the virus.

Edu said, “All the corps members were tested. In the first batch, we had 18; along with the second batch, we have a total of 33 cases.”

According to her, the corps members have been taken to an isolation centre in Obubra, where the NYSC camp is located.

SOKOTO STATE

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr Ali Inname, also confirmed to Saturday PUNCH that 14 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded among the prospective corps members posted to the state.

EKITI STATE

Similarly, the Coordinator, Ekiti State COVID-19 Response Task Force, Prof Mobolaji Aluko, disclosed that 17 corps members in the state had tested positive for the virus in the state, saying, “The corps members, numbering about 2,000, were tested before access into the camp.”

BAUCHI STATE

In Bauchi State, no fewer than 16 out of the 1,750 corps members deployed to the state tested positive for COVID-19.

The Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Rilwan Mohammed, who disclosed this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, said those who tested positive had been isolated and treated at the state permanent orientation camp.

EDO STATE

In Edo State, 17 prospective corps members tested positive for the virus.

The state COVID-19 Incidence Manager, Dr Andrew Obi, however, said the corps members had been discharged and cleared to rejoin the camp.

He said, “Seventeen prospective corps members were identified to have symptoms of the COVID-19 earlier this week. They were quickly isolated and taken into the intensive care unit at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital. As of Friday, they have all recovered.

OSUN STATE

“We cannot say categorically that there are Delta variants in the state because samples must be tested and subjected to sequencing before one can identify the variant. It’s only two laboratories—NAIMA and the one at the Redeemer’s University in Osun State—that can do sequencing. My take is that it would be good to set up sequencing centres at every geopolitical zone.”

DELTA STATE

The Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr Nordic Onoye, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, said six prospective NYSC members tested positive for the virus.

In Osun State, about 38 prospective NYSC members and some officials tested positive for the virus.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Health, Dr. Siji Olamiju, said the 38 cases were recorded in August, adding that all the COVID-19 patients were responding to treatment at the isolation bay set up by the government at the NYSC orientation camp in Ede.

He said, “We discovered almost 38 cases this month and managing them; they have been responding well.”

ENUGU STATE

In Enugu State, officials did not give the number of prospective NYSC members who tested positive for the virus. Though some corps members were said to have tested positive for COVID-19, they were deemed “not a medical threat.”

KWARA STATE

In Kwara State, none of the 2,719 prospective corps members had tested positive, according to an official of the NYSC.

The Public Relations Officer of the NYSC in the state, Oladipo Morakinyo, stated that 2,719 corps members had been deployed to the state, adding that none of them was positive for COVID-19.

“We don’t have any COVID-19 patient in Kwara State,” Morakinyo said.

BENUE STATE

The Benue State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Joseph Ngbea, noted that there were over five isolation centres in the state, which he said were large enough for any upsurge.

Also, the Public Relations Officer of the NYSC, Benue State, Mrs Victoria Ogwuche, said prospective corps members were tested before being admitted to the camp.

She was, however, silent on whether there were positive cases.

TRAGIC: Late President Yar’Adua’s son remanded in prison for allegedly killing four people
Mr Yar’Adua is accused of crushing the victims to death while driving along Yola bye pass on June 23.

A Magistrate’s Court in Yola on Thursday remanded Aminu Yar’Adua, 36, the son of late former President Musa Yar’Adua, in prison for allegedly killing four people in an auto crash in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

Mr Yar’Adua, a student of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Yola, was charged to court for allegedly causing death by dangerous driving on 23 June, 2021.

According to the police First Information Report (FIR) tendered in court by the prosecutor, Insp. Zakka Musa, the accused, Mr Yar’Adua, had, while driving along Yola bye pass on 23 June, 2021 , crushed six people as a result of over speeding.

The court heard that four of the victims were killed and the other two were injured in the accident, with the victims all hailing from Sabon Pegi, Yola South Local Government Area.

”Those that died in the accident were identified as; Aisha Umar (30), Aisha Mamadu (32), Suleiman Abubakar(2) and Jummai Abubakar (30), while, Rejoice Annu (28) and Hajara Aliyu(27) sustained injuries,” according to the FIR.
But, when the FIR was read to Mr Yar’Adua as prayed by the prosecutor, he denied committing the offence, describing the allegation as untrue.

At that point, the prosecutor pleaded with the court to adjourn the matter, to enable him duplicate the case file and forward to the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The Magistrate, Jummai Ibrahim, granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to 19th August, 2021, for further mention, and ordered that the ex-president’s son be remanded in prison custody until then.

Lionel Messi might no longer play for Barcelona despite efforts made by the club.

Barcelona FC will not be able to keep Messi as the economic and structural rules proposed by Laliga's economic control has resulted into this.

He is now a free agent until he finds a club to sign ahead of the 2021/2022 season.

JUST IN : EFCC secures the conviction of two Notorious bankers for stealing millions from a deceased customers account.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, Uyo Zonal Command, has secured the conviction of two bank officials, Daniel Akpan Eno and Mbuk Idongesit before Justice Edem Ita Kufre of the Cross River State High Court, Calabar for conspiracy and theft of funds in the account of a deceased customer of a commercial bank.

The duo were convicted on Wednesday August 4, 2021 after pleading guilty to separate one count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy and fraudulent transfers. A third defendant, and alleged accomplice, Victor John Okon pleaded “not guilty”. His trial was adjourned till August 10, 2021 for consideration of bail application.

Justice Kufre convicted and sentenced Akpan to three months imprisonment with an option of fine of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50, 000.00), while Idongesit was sentenced to three months imprisonment with an option of Thirty Thousand Naira (N30, 000.00) fine.
The convicts’ journey to prison started on May 23, 2021 when Idongesit (alongside one Utibe George- currently at large) approached Akpan with the burial programme of one Godfried Godwin Osso, a deceased customer of the Bank, whom George(at large) claimed was his step – father, with a plot to steal from the deceased’s account.

On May 24, 2021, George concluded the deal with the convicts and also contacted a Teller (Victor Okon – the 3rd defendant) from another branch of the bank to ease access to the funds in the account of the deceased. A 50% sharing formula was agreed upon by the conspirators and the plot was executed.

The commission waded in following a petition from the bank, alleging suspicious dissipation of monies in the deceased account into the accounts of family members and acquaintances, from where they were diverted to personal use.

Investigation revealed that on June 19, 2019 Victor Okon connived with George Ifiok Utibe (at large) and received the sum of One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N1, 500, 000.00). Daniel Akpan also benefited the sum of One Million and Forty Thousand Naira (N1, 040, 000.00) while Godwin Mbuk benefited the sum of One Hundred and Thirty Thousand Naira (N130, 000.00) only

The judge ordered the convicts remanded at the Nigerian Correctional facility until they pay their fines, while Victor was remanded at the Commission’s detention facility pending the hearing of his bail application.

BREAKING NEWS : IPOB sends serious message to Fulani herdsmen over attack in Enugu.

Suspected Fulani herders on Sunday night attacked a farm settlement in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Council in Enugu State and reportedly killed many farmers and injured others.
Yahoogist gathered that the herdsmen, who wielded dangerous objects, attacked Obie Aku farm camp. The development sent shivers in the spin of the community yesterday.

The incident is coming about five years after gun-wielding herdsmen attacked the Ukpabi Nimbo community in Uzouwani and killed several persons. The invaders swooped on the natives in the early hours of the day and killed as much as they could and fled. That was on April 25, 2016.

However, the Police in the state which confirmed the recent attack said that it recovered only three young men with various degrees of machete cuts at the farm settlement and rushed them to the hospital, where they were being treated. The Police were however silent about those that allegedly died in the incident.

As of Monday morning, villagers were said to be combing the bushes near the farm settlement in search of more victims of the attack.
The three wounded persons recovered from the attack were Melly Nwodo from Umugwuocha Mgboko; Nnadi Arinze from Umudikwu Aloke Nua and Opia Apeh from Ogwurogwu, all in Uzouwani council.

A source stated that the farmers usually move from their communities to the settlement during the farming period, explaining that “it is not only farmers from Uzouwani that settle there, but others also come from other neighbouring communities that share a boundary with the people of Uzouwani”

He stated that apart from the farmers from Uzouwani, “there are Fulani herdsmen who have settled in the area and graze their cattle from there. I know that they do disagree, especially when the cows eat up crops in the farmland, but they usually settle whatever grievances they have. That is why we are still shocked by this incident. We don’t know the motive for the attack and how many people were involved. But this is certainly not a good one”.

Another source stated that the attack was provoked by the insistence for compensation by one of the farmers whose crops were destroyed by the cattle.

“The herders agreed to pay but paid only seventy thousand naira (N70,000). They turned back and played ambush on the farmer and killed him. Other farmers were attacked in the process. I don’t know how many of them that were killed in the incident for now”, he said

Enugu Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Daniel Ndukwe in a statement said: “Following information received at Nimbo Police Division in the early hours of today, 26/07/2021(yesterday), alleging that yet-to-be-identified hoodlums attacked some persons in a location at Opanda Village in Nimbo Community of Uzo-Uwani LGA, Police Operatives attached to the Division raced to the scene and found 3 young men with degrees of machete cuts. They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are responding to treatment.

“Meanwhile, the area is calm, while the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, has ordered the conduct of the thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring the perpetrators to book. He also calls on residents of the area to remain calm and assist the Police with useful information, please”.

In another development, Soldiers reportedly invaded the Enugu camp of unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network at Amagunze, Nkanu east council of Enugu State.

During the raid, they were said to have smashed a gang of gunmen who had been terrorizing Enugu metropolis and its environs in past weeks, killing some and recovering several other items. Enugu had severally been attacked after three Hilux vans were used to rob a SuperMarket in the Onu Asata axis.

During the robbery of the SuperMarket, bags of rice, cartons of noodles, Gas cylinders among others were removed. It was closely followed by the murder of two high-profile persons as well as an attack on a police checkpoint at Amodu axis. Items recovered from the camp of the gunmen were food items, generators, gas cylinders, ammunition, and a Jeep, with several other human casualties recorded.

IN NIGERIA: Over 250 house's razed to ashes in one night. By Fulani Militias including my family house, our farmlands destroyed, our animals stolen, our relatives killed. 😢 😢

This is a community very close to the Army barracks, less than 30min drive from the city of Jos.
Thousands of people rendered homeless, number of orphans and widows sky-rocketing.

This is not the first attack, nor the 10th or 20th attack on rigwe land in Bassa LGA, of Plateau State.
We lost count of the number of attacks as we lost count on the deaths of our people.

I wonder, do our Leaders care at all?
What's Gen Ali's Mission on the Plateau?(the G.O.C of 3 Armoured Division barracks)
Is Plateau Man truly his brother's keeper?
Which land will be next, when they're done with rigwe land?
I have dozens of questions? I'm in pain 😥😥
Where do we go from here?

Dear Humanity.
I write you because you taught me "Ubuntu"
I write because I still believe in love.
Today my house is on fire

DO NOT JUDGE: To this day, many assume Michael Jackson bleached his skin to become white – that it was a wilful cosmetic decision because he was ashamed of his race. Yet in the mid-1980s Jackson was diagnosed with vitiligo, a skin disorder that causes loss of pigmentation in patches on the body. According to those close to him, it was an excruciatingly humiliating personal challenge, one in which he went to great lengths to hide through long-sleeve shirts, hats, gloves, sunglasses and masks. When Jackson died in 2009, his autopsy definitively confirmed he had vitiligo, as did his medical history.

Moral of the story: DO NOT JUDGE IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE WHOLE STORY.

BREAKING NEWS: AREWA YOUTHS THREATEN TO SHUT DOWN NIGERIA IF FG HANDS DCP ABBA KYARI TO FBI || YAHOOGIST.NG

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, (AYCF) has vowed to shut down Nigeria if anything should happen to embattled Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) DCP Abba Kyari, following his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over fraud and money laundering allegations, as well as the subsequent suspension by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

According to Ripples, the AYCF, in a statement signed by the National Coordinator, Yerima Shettima and made available to to newsmen on Monday, declared that “nothing must happen to decorated officer, Abba Kyari,in the wake of his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” or they will crumble the country.

The group described Kyari’s current travails as “the attempted intimidation of a police officer right inside his independent fatherland.”

It also rejected the “purported plans to arrest DCP Kyari,” describing the move by the FBI as “totally unacceptable, a slap on the sensibility of our compatriots and a ridicule on one of our finest crack detectives.”

“The AYCF hereby warns the FBI and all those trying to rubbish the good works of DCP Abba Kyari that we will resist such attempts with everything within our powers.

“We are keeping taps on the happenings in the matter as there is no justification for singling out one of Nigeria’s most effective and efficient police officers for castigation.

“We are calling all Nigerians who are truly patriotic to stand behind a man who has made an unrivalled mark on the sands of time by diligently serving his fatherland.

“We also call on relevant stakeholders in the country, especially civil society organizations, to rally round this officer who risked his life in multiple operations across Nigeria, a fact proved many times through BBC news coverage of such operations.

“While we are conscious of our sovereignty as a nation, we demand justice for a man with unrivalled records of detective capabilities in the recent history of Nigeria”, the group said.

HUSHPUPPI: How FBI Arrested Three Of Abba Kyari’s Co-Accused
By Adekunle Dada On Jul 31, 2021

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has three persons named along with Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, as co-accused in a $1.1 million transnational cyber-fraud, new court documents obtained have revealed. According to PREMIUM TIMES, the arrested persons are: Yusuf Adeyinka Anifowoshe (aka AJ or Alvin Johnson), Rukayat Motunraya Fashola (aka Morayo) and Bolatito Tawakalitu Agbabiaka (aka Bolamide).
The court documents showed that Mr Anifowoshe and Ms Fashola were arrested at their separate homes in New York, on July 22.

Another set of documents also showed that Ms Agbabiaka was arrested in New Jersey, and subsequently granted bail in the sum of $150,000.

YAHOOGIST.NG had reported that the United States Department of Justice had said ongoing investigations showed that Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi allegedly bribed Kyari to arrest one Kelly Chibuzo Vincent, one of his accomplices in Nigeria.
In a court document released by the United States Department of Justice on Wednesday, titled: ‘Six Indicted in International Scheme to Defraud Qatari School Founder and then Launder over $1 Million in Illicit Proceeds’, Kyari was said to have been bribed to arrest one Kelly Chibuzor Vincent, 40, in Nigeria, who created bogus documents and arranged for the creation of a fake bank website and phone banking line to support the defrauding of a business person trying to provide $1.1m for the funding of a school in Qatar.

Revealing how Mr Anifowoshe and Ms Fashola were arrested, FBI special agent, Andrew Innocenti, recalled in an affidavit that the U.S. District Court of Central Carlifornia had issued warrants for their arrest on April 29, 2021.

Innocenti said the addresses of the duo were obtained “based on surveillance” before law enforcement agents visited their homes to execute the arrest warrant.

According to Mr Innocenti, law enforcement agents visited Mr Anifowoshe’s house at 2885 West 15th Street, , Brooklyn, New York on July 22.

“On July 22, 2021, law enforcement agents went to 2885 West 15th Street, , Brooklyn, New York. Upon ex*****on of a search warrant at that address, a male came to the door,” Mr Innocenti said.

Mr Anifowoshe was promptly recognised “based on law enforcement agents’ comparison” to his known photo.

The special agent said further, “Law enforcement agents identified themselves to ANIFOWOSHE and asked for his name. ANIFOWOSHE confirmed that he was ANIFOWOSHE.

“Law enforcement agents obtained ANIFOWOSHE’s passport. The name and photograph of ANIFOWOSHE on the passport matched the ANIFOWOSHE for whose arrest warrant was issued on April 29, 2021 in the Central District of California based on law enforcement databases.
“The appearance of the individual who identified himself as ANIFOWOSHE matches the appearance known to law enforcement for ANIFOWOSHE wanted in the Central District of California.” He said following the confirmation of his identity, “there is probable cause to believe that the defendant ANIFOWOSHE is the defendant ANIFOWOSHE who is wanted in the Central District of California”.

Innocenti’s account indicates that he partook in the arrest of Ms Fashola at her home at 48 Irving Street, Valley Stream, New York, where she was residing with family members.
“On July 22, 2021, I went to 48 Irving Street, Valley Stream, New York. FASHOLA’s family members answered the door,” the FBI special agent said.
The agents were admitted into the house after family members confirmed that she was in.
They were then led upstairs where Ms Fashola was at the time. This was immediately followed by an identity confirmation procedure similar to the one carried out at Mr Anifowoshe’s residence was carried out.

“I recognised the female upstairs as FASHOLA, based on my comparison of the female to a known photo of FASHOLA.
“Law enforcement agents identified themselves to FASHOLA. FASHOLA identified herself as FASHOLA,” Mr Innocenti said.
The suspect, according to him, also confirmed her identity during a custodial interview.

“In a custodial interview, I asked FASHOLA for name and her date of birth and FASHOLA provided her name and date of birth, which matched the date of birth for the FASHOLA whose arrest warrant was issued on April 29, 2021, in the Central District of California,” he stated.
The special agent added, “Based on law enforcement records, I know this to be FASHOLA’s date of birth.” He also said her appearance “matches the appearance known to law enforcement for the FASHOLA wanted in the Central District of California”.
“Based on the foregoing, I submit that there is probable cause to believe that the defendant FASHOLA is the defendant FASHOLA who is wanted in the Central District of California,” he added.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that details of how the third defendant, Ms Agbabiaka, was arrested in New Jersey were not contained in the documents sighted.
But court records confirmed that she was granted bail by a magistrate judge, Jessica Allen, of U.S. District Court of New Jersey in Newark on July 22, 2021.
The bail bond was set at $150,000.
Mr Anifowoshe and Ms Fashola were similarly granted bail by Peggy Kuo, a magistrate judge of the Eastern District Court of New York in Brooklyn also on July 2021.
While the bail bond for Mr Anifowoshe was set at $300,000, that of Ms Fashola was set at $150,000. The government has however applied to the courts for an order for the defendants to “be removed to the Central District of California so that they may be dealt with according to law.

BREAKING: U.S. Court orders FBI to arrest, detain Abba Kyari over Hushpuppi multimillion-dollar fraud.

warrant of arrest has been issued for Nigeria’s police commissioner Abba Kyari, Peoples Gazette can report based on court documents.

Otis Wright of the United States District Court for the Central District of California ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to track down Mr Kyari and produce him in the United States for his role in a multi-million dollar fraud perpetrated by Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas, a notorious Nigerian fraudster.

Mr Abbas was arrested in Dubai last June and he pleaded guilty to fraud in the U.S. this week. The FBI said Messrs Abbas and Kyari have been friends and were both involved in a conspiracy to launder money.

Mr Kyari was also indicted of receiving bribes from Mr Abbas to arrest a member of the syndicate in Nigeria.

American prosecutors first sought a court warrant to arrest Mr Kyari on February 12, 2021, according to court documents seen by The Gazette. Another warrant was requested on April 29, 2021.

Judge Wright’s permission for the FBI to arrest Mr Kyari and hold him in U.S. custody was unsealed on July 26.

Mr Kyari in a hurried statement denied allegations of conspiracy with Hushpuppi, saying he only met him two years ago and did not benefit financially from the fraudster.

It was not immediately clear whether or not an extradition request has been filed for Mr Kyari. Attorney-General Abubakar Malami did not immediately return a request seeking comments from Yahoogist.ng

29/07/2021

Nigerian police commissioner Abba Kyari left his official activities in Nigeria and flew to Dubai to enjoy a stupendous lifestyle with notorious Internet fraudster Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The September 2019 trip was only an episode of a mutually-beneficial cozy affair of Messrs Kyari and Abbas’ that was uncovered by American authorities as part of their ongoing prosecution of Mr Abbas for multimillion-dollar Internet fraud.

Mr Abbas pleaded guilty this week after his legal representatives successfully negotiated a plea deal with prosecutors in Central California, court documents said. He faces up to 20 years in jail at sentencing in the coming weeks. He will also forfeit some of his plunder from years of online fraud and pay restitution to some of his victims, court filings said.

Following Mr Abbas’ guilty plea, additional documents showing how Mr Kyari was indicted as a member of Mr Abbas’ syndicate were unsealed. Peoples Gazette earlier published how Mr Abbas bribed Mr Kyari to arrest one of his gang members and throw him in jail following a dispute presumably over proceeds of their crime.

Additional details in the indictment file contained how Mr Kyari left his job as a police officer and travelled to Dubai to enjoy a good time with Mr Abbas, who lived at Palazzo Versace in the Emirati commercial capital.

Mr Abbas “sent a car and driver to drive” Mr Kyari around “during that trip,” FBI unsealed indictment said. Mr

Also during the trip, Mr Kyari bragged to Mr Abbas about some of his so-called crime-busting activities in Nigeria, to which Mr Abbas responded by playing allegiance to the police chief.

“Am really happy to be ur boy,” Mr Abbas told Mr Kyari in an intercepted message. “I promise to be a good boy to u sir.”
Mr Kyari is also mentioned in a document by the U.S. Department of Justice, carrying out Hushpuppi’s order to arrest and jail a fellow conspirator, Kelly Chibuzo Vincent, in a fraud scheme after a disagreement over a $1.1 million dupe of a Qatari businessperson.

Mr Kyari has gained popularity as a strict and upright cop who cracked down on violent crimes in Nigeria, including kidnapping and armed banditry despite the warnings and allegations that his methods were brutal and corrupt.

In 2018, rights group Amnesty International accused Mr Kyari of illegally depleting assets of a suspected criminal after his team shot the man dead on the highway. Collins Ezenwa’s wife at the time said Mr Kyari and his team withdrew money from her late husband’s bank account and cleared millions in accommodation proceeds from his hotels.

Mr Kyari, who was honoured at a special plenary by the Nigerian House of Representatives, denied allegations of corruption against him and his team members, but sidestepped specific charges linking him to depletion of confiscated assets.
