During my childhood in the village, one of the sweetest news then was the birth of a new baby. Only the adults rejoice for the safe delivery, but we, the little humans at that time, rejoice mostly because there's going to be a party where we will eat three different kinds of food: Porridge yam and vegetables in the morning. Akpụ with a delicious Egusi or Bitter Leaf soup in the afternoon, and then rice and stew to take home in the evening. E ruzie ụlọ, a na-akụ nkaji na ezé here and there.

These events are called "Nfuta Ọmụgbọ" or "Npụta Ọmụgwọ" in my language. I think it's what Oyibo called child dedication. They are made only for children, but that doesn't mean adults aren't expected to attend or are prohibited from doing so. In fact, some adults come to these events pretending to be children just to eat rice. The love of rice is the beginning of ndi iberibe. Make una just dey zuzu o...

The last time I participated in these events was in my childhood days; that is to say, things were not this terrible economically then. I don't know if my people in the village can still afford akpa rice ọfọdụzie tomatoes ha ga-eji sie stew.

Really, e no easy anywhere now, but it doesn't matter. The hardship may stop some from throwing those parties, but it can never stop the safe deliveries and the joys therein.
