23/09/2023

In France in 1637, a noblewoman, Madeleine D'Auvermont, was put on trial for adultery. She had given birth to a healthy baby boy, which in itself was no crime, but she had been separated from her husband, who was out of the country, for four years!

The birth of the baby caused a huge scandal at the time; her husband was a wealthy nobleman, and the boy would stand to inherit a substantial hereditament as well as a title.

Madeleine’s reputation was at risk, and possibly her life as well.

At the trial, her defence was that she had thought about her husband so vividly at night, often having dreams of an intimate nature about him; her claim was that she had conceived his child through the power of imagination!

The claim was quite a wild one, but she insisted she had been faithful to her husband and the child was his. Experts in the fields of medicine and theology were brought in to testify in the case.

After much discussion, all experts agreed that it was possible to conceive in this way if her imagination was very vivid and she dreamed really hard.

The court found in her favour, and her son was legitimised and declared his ‘father’s’ heir.

The reaction to the judgment by her husband is unknown.

Where’s the justice?
This is the kind of injustice young people like us suffer in Nigeria for earning money legitimately online. I have had my own share of harassment.

Read:

“I found YouTube in my final year when I was at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi. I needed money at the time so I decided to learn everything about YouTube,” Bela said.

“After a while of being consistent with what I did, my YouTube channel blew up, so I scaled up the social ladder by buying a car, properties and even got married.

“I even started a supermarket business with part of the money I made from YouTube. With the media, I started a challenge called the ‘million naira’, challenge where people would discuss the ideas they have and a winner would be selected.

“To me, that was a way of giving back; I thought I was helping my community.”

THE PHONE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

“On March 8, 2019, I suddenly got a call from my bank that my account had been frozen. The first question the bank official asked was if I had a quarrel with anyone and I responded in the negative,” Bela told FIJ.

“According to a friend of mine who was a manager in the bank, he said the order for my accounts to be frozen came from Johnson Babalola, the head of the EFCC Makurdi Zonal Office.

“I didn’t believe what was going on because I knew I hadn’t committed any offence. However, when I couldn’t access any of my accounts I knew it was real and had to call a lawyer.”

Because the freeze order came on a Friday, Bela had to wait till the following Monday to go to the EFCC office with his statement of accounts and other relevant documents.

“It was the longest weekend of my entire life as I kept questioning myself time and again thinking I had unknowingly committed a financial crime,” the youtuber narrated.

“My lawyer and I both went to the EFCC Makurdi Zonal office that Monday, March 11. The EFCC officials started questioning me at a point; they continued the questioning for over five hours.

“I was tired and wanted to go home when Mr. Iyke, the investigative officer, said I was being investigated for fraud and money laundering. They also said they got an order to remand me in their cell but they would search my house for more evidence.

“I was terrified and had no words to say. Before I knew what was going on, I was put into their van and driven back to my house.”

THE HUMILIATING SEARCH

Bela narrated his humiliating experience with the EFCC thereafter.

“They searched through my whole house while turning it upside down. They even searched through my wife’s un**es. It was so humiliating. My neighbours stared at me as though I was a criminal,” Bela said.

“They took away all my documents like my car documents and land papers including my MacBook for forensic check. I was taken back to their office and was locked up in one of their cells. The first night of being locked up was horrifying as I didn’t know what I was doing there.

“The next morning, the investigative officers came for me and took me for more interrogations. The EFCC panel of four started bombarding me with questions whilst trying to intimidate me.

“I explained everything about how my channel worked and the adverts which I was been paid for. I even showed them the videos I made, which were mostly about politics and injustice.

“They already convicted me for a crime I didn’t commit. The next thing I knew was one of them telling me they needed to get my gang and if I could whistle-blow on my friends, they would let me go.” "I explained everything about how my channel worked and the adverts which I was been paid for. I even showed them the videos I made, which were mostly about politics and injustice.

“I wondered what they were saying because I only run a Youtube channel. I don’t need a gang to run Youtube videos for crying out loud,” Bela exclaimed.

“At a point, they called my friends to come to their office and they came thinking they were there to help me; they got locked up also. Two of my friends even missed their exams in the university because they were locked up for two days.

“I called for my dad and brother at a point to help me file for bail but it was futile as the officers told them that they were ready to teach me and my friends a lesson.

“Even my investigative officer confided in me that they had no incriminating evidence on me and that he had informed the Zonal Head who kept telling him to find something. He even asked to release me but the Zonal Head said not to.”

“On the third day, I got a new lawyer who advised me to stay silent. He then filed for bail but it was denied at first but after some pressure by the lawyer, the bail was finally granted. I spent a total of four days locked up in their cell and got released on Thursday, March 14,” Bela said.

“However, the intimidation and harassments from EFCC never stopped, as they kept calling me at odd hours to ask me about things I had already told them about. They even forced my wife to come in for questioning to verify everything I had said.”

Due to the intimidation he suffered at the hands of the EFCC officials, Bela resolved to sue them to unfreeze his account and also release his property in their custody.

“I thought the court case would be easy but it wasn’t as I was faced with different oppositions. After each court hearing, I would get calls and texts from friends and random people that I should not go against the system,” Bela told FIJ.

“EFCC’s defence was that I was making a lot of money and I couldn’t defend the source. According to them, my bank activities were suspicious for my age so I had to prove to them that I was not into fraud.

THE REQUEST FOR KICKBACKS

Bela went on to say officials of the commission would later start demanding for bribe from him.

“During the hearing, an agent of the EFCC visited me in my house and advised me to settle it out of court as there was no way I could win a lawsuit against them.

“On another occasion, I got a call from a man who claimed to be a Mr. Jerry, working at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, who said he had picked an interest in my case. He said he was one of the guys tasked to check my laptop for forensic evidence. He tried to bargain with me to tip them $5,000 and they would unfreeze my account and release my properties but I refused.”

“After three months in court, the judge upheld the decision in my favour that the EFCC couldn’t freeze an account for more than 72 hours. Mine was frozen for three months without a court order and for no just cause. She ordered them to unfreeze my accounts, release my properties and awarded me some damages,” Bela said.

“I was awarded N5 million by the court at first instance. Then I started getting calls from different individuals…I wasn’t feeling safe again so my wife and I relocated to Abuja.

“I later received another summons from the Court of Appeal as the awards granted to me were disputed by all parties. I had not even been paid yet and I was being asked to spend afresh to defend the case again. The appeal court dragged the case from 2019 till 2022.

“The higher court upheld the decision of the high court but slashed the awarded sum to N1.5 million. It didn’t even cover half the cost I had incurred while pursuing the case.”

“I lost everything. I lost my business because of lack of funds. I lost my peace because I was constantly been targeted that I had to relocate. I lost some friendships because the case took a toll on me,” Bela said.

“I even lost the YouTube channel that started all these in the first place, as my channel was taken down.

“Did I really get justice after all is said and done? The agents that did all these to me are still out there and nothing was done to them as the awards granted by the courts have not been honoured yet.”

As my birthday approaches, I remember one of my biggest battles and how I survived.

The Prophet. SARS. Me:
How I’m Still Alive.
____________________

Many years ago, I worked as a junior pastor under a certain Prophet OC Benjamin of Fulfilers’ House Assembly in Ebonyi State.

At that time I was very much younger and passionate about the things of God. All I wanted was to be called the man after Gods’ heart, like David.

I believed in prophets. I believed in prophecies. I believed in miracles. I believed in a lot of things that I would later found out to be lies and empty.

This prophet could tell you everything about yourself; the balance in your bank account; your date of birth; your mother's maiden name; how old your pregnancy is; the names of all your family members.

He raised the dead, healed the blind, caused the lame to walk, etc.

In fact, there was a woman who delivered a dead lamb in the glaring eyes of everyone, in one of our crusades, after 2 years of being pregnant, as claimed.

This man was a major prophet, I hear he still is, in Ebonyi State.

At that time, we use to move around in a convoy of exotic cars, dresses in costly wears, and walks like the next authorities to the throne of God and we had girls of all shapes and sizes throwing themselves at us.

It was on a Tuesday that year, we had a crusade at Agbani Road in Enugu in a Hotel called Royal Palace.

We lodged in that same hotel and rented their hall for the crusade.

Before this day, I had informed my friends, Ken, Ita, and Zeal, of the crusade. They were students at UNN and they had always wanted to come and witness the ministration of their friend, me, who was now a pastor.

That first night, while my friends were seated amongst over a thousand people that had attended the program, I led the opening prayers and ‘watered’ the ground for the coming of the prophetic commander.

After I ushered in the prophet, I left to my hotel room. While in my room resting, I dozed off.

I was still sleeping when I heard a bang on the door and I jumped up and quickly opened the door. I thought one of the senior pastors had come to scold me for relaxing in my hotel room while our crusade was going on downstairs. I was wrong.

Immediately I opened the door, I saw several AK 47 guns pointed at me by rough-looking hefty men. I nearly lost my breath.

Without asking me anything they descended on me with blows, boot-kicks, slaps, and my shirt was torn apart and used to tightly tie my hands to my back.

Then they dragged me downstairs.

We got downstairs and I saw an angry crowd everywhere. I saw my 3 friends mercilessly beating and tied to a Hilux van. That was when I realized that these men that tortured and dragged me downstairs were SARS officers.

They asked me if I knew who these my friends were and I stared at these guys I have known for a very long time, confused, not knowing what was really happening or what they did, or how I was connected to it, I could not deny them.

So, what exactly happened?

While the prophet was ministering to the congregation, as usual, he was healing the sick and it got to the turn of a man who claimed he was born blind. This was going to be the major miracle of the night.

Unknown to this ‘blind’ man, my friends were living in the same neighborhood with him. My friends knew that he was not blind and when they saw him faking blindness they thought that the man was deceiving the prophet, so they stood up and went to let the prophet know that the man was not a blind man.

Unknown to my friends, this man was hired by the prophet to fake blindness.

In the process of trying to blow the cover of this ‘blind’ man, the congregation became confused, and to douse the brewing confusion and rising suspicion, the prophet raised false alarm and allegation that my friends were trying to blackmail and kidnap him.

My friends were quickly caught by the congregation and beating to a pulp before SARS arrived.

When they were been beaten they kept on shouting that I was the one who invited them to the program and that was how I was named the pastor who conspired with hoodlums to kidnap the prophet.

These ‘kidnappers’ did not come with a car, no gun, no machete, no dagger, not even a razor blade. Were they going to kidnap and carry the prophet on their heads?

This incident confirmed my many suspicions.

I had always known that there was a reason why some guys who worked with us and are not even pastors were treated with more attention and paid better by the prophet whereas I pray, preach, and do most of the other things to keep the congregation entertained before the arrival of the prophet.

These guys were the ones who gather information to enable papa to prophesy and are also saddled with the responsibility of hiring miracle actors.

That's why they were paid better and given preferential treatment.

So, to save himself, the prophet sacrificed me and my friends.

Before the SARS people drove away with us, I heard everyone who once revered me curse me and call me all sort of unprintable names, including my girlfriend then, Nneka.

When we got to the police station, we were extremely tortured and subjected to all sorts of dehumanizing treatment by the officers who were doing the bidding of the prophet that gave them fat envelopes.

We were locked up in different cells. As the leader of the ‘kidnap gang,’ I was locked up in cell 1 with other purportedly hardened criminals.

The cell was very small and there was an open toilet at the center of the small room.

We were over 30 in that cell. Some were with gun wounds and other bleeding injuries.

There was no space to sit down or squat. We were all standing awfully close to each other that our dirty bodies were gumming together.

The heat was excruciating and the smell of the open latrine and wounds was suffocating. There was no space to breathe, no water to drink, no one who would have come to my rescue knew where I was.

There was grave silence in this cell except for the unintelligible talks from those who had lost their sanity due to frustration and suffocation.

Each night the SARS people come to that cell and pick one person and we would never see that person again.

I later learned from other inmates that the police people kill and sell body parts to Doctors and Hospitals.

On my 15th day in that cell, a boy brought me a very cold sprite in nylon as bottles were not allowed in the cell.

When he gave me the sprite I couldn't wait to drink it. I was very thirsty. But he said something immediately he handed it over to me.

He said, “guy, check that thing fine before you drink am oo.”

I was still thinking about what the guy said when someone in that cell snatched the sprite from me and drank it. That guy died that day.

The next morning my IPO came to our cell and shouted my name, immediately I answered he said

“so you are still alive?”

After three weeks in that cell, they took me to OC SARS office and I was shocked to see the prophet there.

He had brought bags of foreign rice, bottles of expensive wines, and loads of other goodies and undoubtedly, money too.

I was shocked when the SARS commander excused himself from his office for me and the prophet to talk.

I looked at this prophet and asked him what I did wrong and he apologized and told me that the well-being of his ministry is worth more than one life.

He told me that my friends have been released and that if I want to be released I must accept to work for him as part of his EYES and accept that I must never tell anyone what happened and that I must come to his church and apologize for what happened.

If I disagree I will remain in that cell and he will not guarantee my safety. If after I’m released I fail to play along, he will not guarantee my safety too.

I accepted.

First, I wanted to know what being part of his EYES means and I know that exchange of one fat envelope can cost me my life.

I was freed and I was shocked to see my mother and her sister and a family friend, at the gate of the police station.

They told me that they have been there for six days and the police refused them access to me.

This explains why no further attempt on my life was made. People already knew where I was.

It was a receptionist in that hotel where I was arrested that found my phone in my room and picked my mothers’ call after two weeks to tell her what had happened.

When I got back to Abakaliki, because it was a small town, almost everyone had heard of the pastor that attempted to kidnap his papa. No one ever cared to ask me what happened, not even my girlfriend.

After this incident, the secrets I was exposed to in the church business is something unbelievable. Since then, I have gone ahead to work with different powerful pastors and prophets, traveled to several countries with them, and trust me, you will not believe me if I told you their names.

Even though I gathered enough unbelievable proofs before I dumped them, I may never talk about the BIG MEN in the church business for the sake of my safety.

I made this one public today because I’m very sure that I have what it takes to fight back if OC Benjamin comes after me.

When I post videos of myself dancing alone in my house, don’t call me mad. I have survived a lot and it's only God that knows how I’m still here.

By their sitting positions, you shall know their antecedents. The Holy Book is correct here.

If you are an employer of labor and you advertised vacancy in your office and these three people applied for the job, then on the day of their interviews, you decided to judge their characters based on their sitting manners, who are you going to employ among the three?

Ask yourself, who among the three is sitting like a boss? Who among them is sitting like a servant? What kind of employee do you want to employ? Do you want to employ a boss who will be bossing you in your company or you want to employ a servant who will listen to instructions and work wholeheartedly for the growth of the company?

The choice is left open for Nigerians to make come 2023. From their sitting manners, you don't need a soothsayer to tell you anything before you can find out who among the three presidential candidates who will sit like a boss in A*o Rock while ASUU will go on strike till eternity or insecurities consumes the country and they will never care.

We need a servant leader in A*o Rock come 2023 and not a boss who will order armies to killl protesters who dared to challenge Government bad policies.

We need a civilized president who can address Nigerian People, National Assembly, United Nations, African Union, European Union , etc without reading from the prepared manuscript.

Are you surprised that while the other two presidential candidates were putting on their official tags, PETER OBI kept his own tag on the side stool. Do you know why? Only the genius will know the reason. Vote wisely. Vote

Today, I had an interactive session with Young Professionals in Dallas, Texas.
We discussed the state of the Nigerian economy and I shared with them the strategies I hope to deploy in solving the myriad of problems our country faces.
