Before MC OLUOMO, there was Adebayo Success.

The National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, unit in Oshodi did not emerge as a force within the national body overnight; neither did the head of the unit become a major factor in the politics of Lagos State by mistake. The Oshodi unit of the NURTW first came to prominence during the politics that heralded the second republic in 1979. The strong man and leader of the unit then was Adebayo Ogundare, popularly known as Adebayo Success. Success was an uneducated transport worker from Ekiti State that found fame in Oshodi due to his boldness and ability to organize the mostly erratic, trouble loving motor garage boys.

The contest for power by the National Party of Nigeria (NPN)-led federal government of President Shehu Shagari with its seat in Lagos and the Unity Party of Lagos state government headed by Lateef Jakande, became a hot testing ground for the might of politics. The ruling NPN secured the gritty brawn of Bayo Success and gave him the task of winning to its side all motor parks in Lagos. This he did by mobilizing a huge clientele of motor park drivers, he was given the required support to handle their street activities, mobilization, harassment and sometimes cohesions. He rose quickly through the rank within the party and was a prominent face wherever the party had a campaign or political meeting. At some point, he can be seen standing behind Alhaji Shehu Shagari, the presidential candidate of the NPN in the 1979 general elections, he was that powerful, he was given a Mercedes Benz that looked exactly like the official car of the president which was always parked in front of his office in the Brown Street/ Oyetayo area of Oshodi.

When the government of Shehu Shagari was overthrown in 1984, Success was one of the people picked up by the new military government of General Muhammadu Buhari and thrown behind bars. He was reported to have fallen ill several times while in incarceration. He was later released by the government of General Ibrahim Babangida who ousted Buhari from power. Success breathed his last at the Lagos state General Hospital, Ikeja on October 11, 2002.

Supreme Court temporarily halts banning of old Naira notes

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has temporarily halted the move by the Federal government to ban the use of the old N200, N500 and N1000 notes as legal tenders from February 10.

The Supreme court gave the order while delivering judgment in the exparte application filed before it by the Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kogi state governments against plans by the FG to stop the use of the old Naira notes.

The three states had applied for an order of interim injunction restraining the FG through the Central Bank of Nigeria or the commercial banks from suspending or determining or ending on February 10, 2023, the time frame in which the older versions of the N200, N500 and N1000 notes may no longer be legal tenders

Moving the application today, counsel to the applicants, Mr A. I. Mustapha, SAN, had urged the apex court to grant the application in the interest of justice and the well-being of Nigeria. Mustapha argued that the policy of the government had led to an “excruciating situation that is almost leading to anarchy in the land “.

While he referred to a Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) statistics which put the number of people who don’t have bank accounts at over 60 percent, Mustapha lamented that the few Nigerians with bank accounts can’t even access their monies from the bank as a result of the policy.

The senior lawyer further argued that unless the Supreme Court intervenes the situation will lead to anarchy because most banks are already closing operations.

Delivering ruling in the motion, the seven-man panel led by Justice John Okoro, held that after a careful consideration of the motion exparte this application is granted as prayed, “An order of Interim Injunction restraining the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or the commercial banks from suspending or determining or ending on February 10, 2023, the time frame with which the now older version of the 200, 500 and 1,000 denomination of the naira may no longer be legal tender pending the hearing and determination of their motion on notice for interlocutory injunction”.

He accordingly adjourned to February 15, 2023 for hearing.

Emefiele bows to pressure, appears before Reps panel

The Governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, has appeared before the Ad Hoc Committee of the House of Representatives looking into the new Naira notes.

Mr Emefiele appeared before the committee on Tuesday after days of grandstanding between the him and the House.

Last week, the committee was left fuming after Mr Emefiele shunned invitations of the House despite the threats of arrest warrants by the lawmakers.

On Thursday, the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee, Alhassan Doguwa (APC, Kano), said the committee is giving Mr Emefiele the last chance to appear or risks arrest.

IT IS THE POSITION, NOT THE Person - DIYA

It was Gen. Oladipo Diya's birthday at his Ikeja GRA residence. There were only a handful of folks in the house. The atmosphere was sober and somehow quiet. The adjoining Streets around his house were deserted. Gen Diya sat on a chair in the corner of the sitting room with his gaze fixed on the adjacent wall in sobriety.

His mien was difficult to decipher. He shook the hands of the few well wishers, smiled and responded to their felicitations.

An inquisitive young journalist sneaked up to the General.

"Good evening Sir. My name is Rasheed. I am a journalist. I have covered your birthdays for our Newspaper for the last few years. Today, my Editor did not send me. I came on my own" the young man introduced himself.

The General's face lit up with smile. He stood up, shook the hands of the young man and genuinely welcomed him.

"Those years that I covered your birthdays, it was not easy to get close to you, not to talk of interviewing you. To take a photo of you was extremely challenging. Journalists swarmed the whole place like bees. All the Streets around your house would be filled with cars, and inside the house would be jam packed with people who came to rejoice with you on your birthday.

But today, there are only few cars on your Street and less than 15 people in your house. Yet today is your birthday. What do you have to say?" the journalist asked.*

*Gen. Oladipo Diya wiped the smile from his face and looked intently at the young man. He put an arm on the journalist's shoulder and solemnly said:*

*"Well my young friend. I called ypu "friend" because you are my friend for you to be here today. You see those hundreds of people who thronged my house on my birthday and blocked my Street with their cars when I was the Chief of General Staff?

Those were the friends of the Chief of General Staff. The very few people you are seeing here today are the friends of Oladipo Diya. Oladipo Diya and the Chief of General Staff used to be the same person then.

Today, they are two different people. Most people associate with us because of our position and what they can get from us. Don't ever forget that"

“How Policeman Killed My Pregnant Wife On Christmas Day” - Gbenga Raheem

Gbenga Raheem, the husband of a female lawyer, Omobolanle, who was shot dead by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Drambi Vandi, has narrated how his wife was killed.

Recall that Omobolanle was coming from an eatery with some family members on Christmas Day and had tried to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge when the cop shot at her vehicle.

The bullet was said to have hit the 41-year-old as she was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

The woman, who had a child, was seven-month pregnant when tragedy struck.

Vandi, who was attached to the Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, Lagos State, was said to have spent 33 years in the police force.

Narrating the ugly incident the victim’s husband, Gbenga, said, “On December 25, my wife, nieces, nephews, and cousins, who had come for the holiday, all went to church. On our way back, my wife said since it was Christmas Day, we should take everyone out, so, we went to a supermarket at Abraham Adesanya, then to Domino’s Pizza.

“After that, we headed towards Ajah to do a U-turn to come back to Abraham Adesanya. When we took the U-turn, we saw policemen stopping some vehicles. As we approached them, they said we should stop, and in the process, we heard a loud sound on my wife’s side window. All of a sudden, I saw blood gushing out of her chest.

“I immediately ran out; my sister-in-law, who was also with us, ran out and held the policeman; he cocked his gun at her too. Talking to him was pointless, so I went to see if anything could be done; I saw my wife gasping for breath, and by that time, my sister-in-law had brought the policeman into the car and pushed him into the front seat.

“We drove to a hospital but they said they couldn’t handle it; we eventually took her to Grandville Hospital, where she was confirmed dead. The policemen took her body and put it in the truck; they wanted me to follow them but I said I needed to go and settle my children.”

Bolanle, a graduate of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, recently moved from litigation practice to property law.
