Grammy-nominated singer Seun Kuti has said his musical success isn’t tied to being the son of late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti.

He said he and his elder brother, Femi Kuti, and nephew, Made Kuti, have had successful music careers because of their “deliberate efforts” and “dedication”.

The controversial singer said Fela’s father, Reverend Israel Ransome-Kuti, was also a musician but people never credited his musical achievements to his father.

Speaking in a recent interview with actress Iyabo Ojo, Kuti said, “It is not because of our dad that we are successful in music. My brother, Femi Kuti is 60. I am 40. My nephew, Made Kute is behind us now too, and he is in his 20s. And he is actually the best of all of us. That’s what it means; it continues to progress because we are really dedicated to it.

Reps to Investigate Tundun Biri Bombing, Compensate Victims

The House of Representatives has decided to launch an investigation into the accidental bombing of innocent unarmed civilians in Tundun Biri, a village in Kaduna State.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance presented by Umar Ajilo during Tuesday’s plenary.

Ajilo expressed concern about the recurring incidents of civilian bombings by the military, suggesting a failure of intelligence.

The House aims to probe the circumstances surrounding the accidental bombing and has directed compensation for the victims of the incident.

“This particular incident and many similar incidents in the past which have been widely tagged as ‘operational mistakes’ by the military have exposed the level of intelligence failure in Military operations.

“This House must rise to the occasion to ensure that this marks the end of the series of mistakes that more often than not go uninvestigated and the victims uncompensated,” he said.

The House of Representatives has taken several actions in response to the accidental bombing incident in Tundun Biri, Kaduna State. The following resolutions were made:

1. The Committee on Army has been mandated to investigate the incident to assess the damage and ensure adequate compensation for the victims and survivors.

3. A committee will be constituted to pay a condolence visit to the families of the victims and survivors.

Civil Society Group Criticizes Governor Uzodinma for High Office Spending

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, faces criticism from civil society organization Policy Alert for allegedly prioritizing his office over key social sectors in the state’s budget implementation during the third quarter of 2023.
Policy Alert, through its Programme Officer, Fiscal Reforms and Anti-Corruption, Faith Paulinus, expressed concern over the imbalance, citing the Third Quarter Budget Performance Report for 2023 (July-September).

The group highlighted that while all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in the state received a total capital release of N7.37bn, the Office of the Governor alone incurred expenditures totaling N11.84bn, representing a 60.6 percent excess over the combined allocation to other sectors during the same period.

The organization, focused on promoting fiscal and ecological justice in the Niger Delta, criticized the disproportionately high priority given to the Office of the Governor.

It pointed out that, based on trend analysis, the office received a total release of N31.5bn in the first three quarters of 2023 (January-September), reaching 95 percent of its N33.1bn budget for the entire fiscal year.

“If the spending trend continues in the last quarter, there is a strong likelihood that the State Government may engage in extra-budgetary expenses for the office of the Governor.”

While noting that there is nothing wrong in making expenditures to the Office of the Governor if there was a budget for the expenses, the organization said what is worrisome is the total neglect of social sectors which had zero capital release during the quarter.

“It is unthinkable that no capital expenditure was made for the social sector during the quarter. This is the sector that warehouses Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Education, Health, Youth and Social Development, and Women’s Affairs and Vulnerable Groups. In addition, there was also no capital release for Agriculture and food security”.

In response to the budgetary disparities observed in the third quarter of 2023, Policy Alert has called on the Imo State government to redirect its focus towards the social sector in the final quarter of the year.

The organization emphasized the need for increased attention, pointing out that the Social Services Sector received a mere capital release of N4.17bn for the first three quarters, constituting only 14 percent of the N29.74bn allocated for the entire year. This, according to the organization, indicates a significant deprivation of social services for the citizens.

Additionally, Policy Alert highlighted the contrast in spending patterns, noting that recurrent expenditure during the quarter amounted to N18.76bn, while capital spending was only N7.37bn.

Policy Alert, through its Programme Officer, Fiscal Reforms and Anti-Corruption, Faith Paulinus, expressed concern over the imbalance, citing the Third

Bandits in Taraba Collect Beer as Harvest Levy from Farmers

In the Ardo-Kola local government area of Taraba State, bandits have reportedly adopted an unusual approach by collecting beer as levies from farmers before permitting them to harvest their crops.
According to Daily Trust, a senior civil servant in Jalingo revealed that he was compelled to purchase beer amounting to over N200,000 before gaining permission to harvest his Benniseed farm.

The bandits allegedly impose levies ranging from N20,000 to N100,000 based on the size of the farm.

“ I paid with beer worth N200,000 before getting access to my farm,” he said.

Bandits Extend Beer Levy to Multiple Farming Communities in Taraba

The imposition of beer levies by bandits reportedly extends to various farming communities in the Ardo-Kola local government area of Taraba State.

The affected communities include Baka, Kasakuru, Majowere, Digun, Nyapori, Buzi, Dare, and Sakala, as detailed in the report.

According to a local resident, Mallam Dantala Bello, farmers have become accustomed to paying these levies to the bandits as a prerequisite for harvesting their crops.

“Some abandon their farms if they are levied too much and project that they can’t recover the amount after harvest,” he said.

Another source in the area said the bandits were working with informants to get information on people coming to harvest their farms in the area.

Anambra Lawmaker Laments Poverty’s Threat to National Security

Henry Mbachu, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Awka South 1 constituency, expressed concern about the widespread poverty in Nigeria.
Following a tour of markets in his constituency, Mbachu emphasized that the escalating poverty levels pose a threat to the nation’s security, stability, and unity.

He called for a more sustainable approach to address the increasing rate of poverty in the country.

“My engagements have been focused more on the people, especially the poor who live below the poverty line. The level of poverty and inequality in Nigeria today threatens national security, stability and unity.

“Well-to-do individuals should be done with ‘dorime’ and 21 years old liquor. The cost of one bottle of exotic drink can end excruciating poverty in many families. This is the time to change approach,” he implored.

He emphasized the need to create additional job opportunities for the underprivileged. He highlighted that implementing economic and institutional reforms for increased efficiency could contribute to income elevation.

Furthermore, Mbachu called on young individuals to actively participate in the government’s anti-corruption initiatives. He encouraged them to emerge as crucial partners in monitoring projects, fostering development, and contributing to the growth of their local communities.

Egbin Power Plant Shutdown Causes Partial Nigeria Blackout.

Electricity blackouts have occurred in certain regions of Nigeria after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) initiated the shutdown of the Egbin Power Station for maintenance.

In an official statement on its official X page on Monday, the TCN explained that the shutdown is necessary to address a leaking gas pipeline.

The temporary closure of the Egbin Power Station will result in a 676MW reduction in bulk power supplied to the national grid for a period of 72 hours.

“This is to notify the public that as of 11:13 hours on 18 December 2023, the Egbin Power generating station was shut down to allow the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) to maintain a linking gas pipeline supplying gas.

“The station will be shut down three days from today(Monday).

“This means a reduction of 676MW of bulk power generated into the nation’s grid for three days and consequently the quantum of bulk power available to be delivered to distribution companies’ load centres”, the TCN statement reads.

Egbin Power Plant is Nigeria’s largest thermal generating station in Lagos, with an installed capacity of 1,320 MW to the country’s National grid.

CDS: Strict Punishment for Military Drug Offenders Planned.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has emphatically stated his commitment to implementing punitive measures against any military personnel found engaging in illicit drug abuse and trafficking.

Gen. Musa reiterated this assurance during his visit to the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), in Abuja.

Expressing commendation for the NDLEA’s significant achievements in combating drug abuse and trafficking, the CDS emphasized that these efforts have brought about a positive transformation in Nigeria’s international image.

Furthermore, Gen. Musa affirmed the unwavering support of the armed forces for the NDLEA in its renewed campaign against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

“On our part, we will not shield anybody found guilty of drugs. We have made a number of arrests in Northeast, our checkpoints and all; we pick them up and prosecute them.

“Anyone found guilty of drugs must pay for it. We also try to do rehabilitation, and that is one aspect I will recommend to be taken seriously because some people unknowingly get into drugs because of peer pressure.

“Drug abuse must be tackled holistically because that is very important, but if we allow it to take over the country, we will all suffer for it.

“To convey to our troops that we are together and working as a team, if there are issues especially with the members of the armed forces, please don’t hesitate and let us know.

“We will take adequate action. We don’t want drugs in our system,’’ he said.

The CDS highlighted that the impactful efforts of the NDLEA have prompted the military to incorporate drug tests as a mandatory component for both training and promotion within the armed forces.

Emphasizing the tangible connection between drug abuse and national security concerns, Gen. Musa acknowledged that effectively addressing substance abuse could significantly mitigate the existing security challenges.

In response to a suggestion from the NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, the CDS committed to considering the establishment of a central rehabilitation center specifically for the military.

“Drug use has slipped into so many places, and for members of the Armed Forces, we’re not excluded.

“Now we have introduced as part of our recruitment processes and for our people to go for courses, they must take a drug test.

“This will ensure that personnel of the Armed Forces are doing the right thing and are in the right frame of mind; we’ll continue to do that and continue to intensify our efforts,’’ he said.

In response, the NDLEA Chairman, expressed commendation for the unwavering loyalty, sacrifices, and hard work of the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), in safeguarding the nation.

Furthermore, Marwa extended appreciation to the military for their valuable support to the NDLEA, emphasizing the collaborative efforts in terms of logistics and training.

Highlighting the crucial nature of the partnership between the military and the NDLEA, the Chairman emphasized that substance abuse lies at the core of crimes and criminal activities in the country.

“The criminal elements rely on drugs to carry out their criminalities, and that is why we have been very ferocious in our offensive action against them to cut access and availability of these illicit drugs,’’ he said.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has emphatically stated his commitment to implementing punitive measures against any military
