GNC SPOTLIGHT
Wothando Ngubeni (Game Dev)

QUESTIONS
- TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I was Born in Durban KZN, spent the first quarter of my life living in Soweto - Johannesburg. I studied Sound Engineering at the SABC HQ for a year until I dropped out to pursue game dev and programming which I am self taught.

- WHAT DROVE YOU INTO DISCOVERING YOUR KIND OF CRAFT
Studying physics made me ask a lot of questions about the universe, our planet and everything in it. And it made me really interested in the pure creation of things. I figured since creating physical objects out of nothing is out of my scope for the time being, ill just settle for virtual objects, and BAM there you have it.

- WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORKS
The creation of the universe and everything in it.

- DO YOU SPECIALISE OR DIVERSIFY
Definitely an expert in my field. One of the best to ever do it quite frankly.

- HOW MANY GAMES HAVE YOU MADE AND WHICH IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE
So far 4 & my favourite has to be my current project FatherSonWar.

- WHICH ASPECT IS DEMANDING; STARTING OR FINISHING A PROJECT
Finishing by far. There's WAY more work towards the end of the project then initially. At the beginning you don't even care about the work because the idea is so fresh and the excitement is motivating and energizing, towards the end it becomes more of a job, especially if your solo - the marketing, self publishing, polishing the product, it all adds up.

- HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR INDUSTRY
Game development is still considered by many as "fun and games" or "unserious" so looking for support is definitely harder then something like OS developing for AI.

- DO YOU FEEL THERE'S A GOOD SUPPORT ATMOSPHERE BETWEEN GAME DEVS
South Africa/Africa definitely not. In the west most certainly yes.

- MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING A GAME DEV
Creating new worlds from scratch and bringing them to life and of-cause watching other people enjoy it.

- ONE THING YOU HOPE TO IMPROVE ON IN YOUR INDUSTRY
Inclusivity & accessibility. Especially in relation to funding. We should be investing in great ideas even before the prototype stage.

epochcomics

QUESTIONS
- TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I'm a person of ardent faith who also loves comics as a medium of art, education and entertainment. I'm quite passionate about both.

- HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR BRAND
Before by the age of 5, I had always dreamed of creating a universe of superheroes inspired by my favourite comic brands Dc and Marvel. I first did it for fun as a youngster, but today It is more defined and an established business.

- DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR
Yes. I greatly admire Alex Ross and he is one of the greatest influences on me as far as my work is concerned. There are also others like Todd McFarlane as well

- IN YOUR OWN WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR KINDA CONTENTS
My content is inspirational without losing the intrigue and fun. There is a subliminal moral and spiritual message in all of my comics even the ones that don't seem so. I dwell mostly on supernatural themed comics because it comes with my line of work.

- PERSONALLY WHICH ASPECT IS DEMANDING; STARTING OR FINISHING A PROJECT
Once I'm on a project, I don't rest till it's done. Getting to start is sometimes the tricky part. I prefer to finish a project before jumping on the next one

- HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR INDUSTRY
The Nigerian environment does have a way of making our craft seem like less of what it is, but nevertheless the creative industry thrives all the same against all odds

- DO YOU FEEL THERE'S A GOOD SUPPORT ATMOSPHERE BETWEEN COMIC BRANDS
There is, but not enough yet

- MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO
Being able to inspire and entertain people and actually having a loyal audience and also knowing that there are young creatives that look up to me, that is more rewarding than the monetary side which is also important. Also being able to go to places and meet people I never imagined I would.

- MOST CLICHE THING YOU HAVE COME ACROSS IN YOUR FIELD
One man studios

- ONE THING YOU HOPE TO IMPROVE ON IN YOUR INDUSTRY
Actually three things: Engagement, Collaboration and distribution because the Nigerian Comic Industry needs all these to go further mainstream globally.

QUESTIONS
- TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF
I'm also known as "Art_Of_Eli" on Instagram. I'm a 21 year old artist, geographer, drummer and bassist. I'm currently in my final year of university and I am a Christian.

- HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR CRAFT
I saw my friend's sketchbook once and loved his drawings. Since then, I've been interested in it. Since I wasn't born with the talent, I learnt to draw.

- DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR, IF SO WHO
AbdulSamad (Jaybee_jarcques24 on Instagram)

- WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORKS
I'm inspired mostly by other people's art and the beauty they create.

- IN YOUR OWN WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR KINDA CONTENTS
Purely artist content, both digital and traditional art.

- PERSONALLY WHICH ASPECT IS DEMANDING; STARTING OR FINISHING A PROJECT
Starting a project is often the issue. Thinking and brainstorming the pose, backgrounds and general feel of an image can be quite tasking.

- HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR INDUSTRY
Art in Nigeria is slowly gaining grounds. Bias is often made favouring portrait art but comic and anime, as well as cartoons, are gaining recognition. So yeah, the future is bright for us

- DO YOU FEEL THERE'S A GOOD SUPPORT ATMOSPHERE IN THE ART INDUSTRY
Well the art community is one of serious competition but also quite supportive. Everyone wants to see the other person grow and a lot of encouragement is passed around. So the art community is a fun one to be a part of.

- WHAT'S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING AN ARTIST
Most rewarding part? Getting paid!! 😂 Aside that, seeing your own growth in what you love, that's priceless.

- ONE THING YOU HOPE TO IMPROVE ON IN YOUR INDUSTRY
To inspire others the same way I was. I hope people see my work and want to take up a pen and create their own magic.

Josh Sacco (Game Dev)
Deadleaf Games

QUESTIONS
- TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I'm an Art Generalist and Game Developer. I've been working in the commercial Games Industry for a decade & on my own projects in my spare time. I do love stylized art, monsters and creatures.

- WHAT DROVE YOU INTO DISCOVERING YOUR KIND OF CRAFT
As a kid I grew up drawing, doing art and loved creating characters and worlds. When I found GameMaker at the time, I was thrilled that I was able to bring these worlds to life. I've always enjoyed being able to design something and make it alive.

- WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORKS
Inspiration for me comes from tackling a theme and seeing how I can twist and incorporate other things to make the design different and interesting, then making it cute and/or relatable.

- DO YOU SPECIALIZE OR DIVERSIFY IN YOUR FIELD
Most of the time I’ll jump between different art roles and tasks. Making games in my spare time has allowed me to pick up various bits of knowledge and skills on the fly.

- HOW MANY GAMES HAVE YOU MADE AND WHICH IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE
I think I’ve easily worked on more than 15 projects in various sized teams by now. Digby Forever was a very memorable indie game because we were a small agile team of 3. I made all the art content for the game. It was fun to make and Apple gave it some decent love on launch.

- WHICH ASPECT IS DEMANDING; STARTING OR FINISHING A PROJECT
I find the start of a project is the most enjoyable, a lot of creative juices flowing and piecing together ideas and mechanics is fun. Finishing a project is more demanding because you're usually out of time and stuck doing repetitive testing and maintenance.

- DO YOU FEEL THERE'S A GOOD SUPPORT ATMOSPHERE BETWEEN GAME DEVS
I feel there’s always good support & vibes especially between local developers in my experience.

- MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING A GAME DEV
For me, it’s just making stuff. Creating something that someone else can immerse in is always awesome.

- ONE THING YOU HOPE TO IMPROVE ON IN YOUR INDUSTRY
I’m not a fan of crunch and hope to explore better systems to keep a team’s creativity and morale up throughout development.

GNC SPOTLIGHT
Uzoma Dunkwu (Artists & Animator)

QUESTIONS
- TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I am an Animation Filmmaker based in Lagos, Nigeria. I majored in Electrical Engineering but never saw the need to follow that path. I’ve always loved the arts and have been fortunate to keep the passion for it alive. I’ve also been opportuned to work for studios such as Marvel and Netflix.

- HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR CRAFT
I’ve always loved to draw since elementary school (probably around age 7). Professionally, I’d say it began in 2012 when I started out with creating comics.

- DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR
As role models, I look up to James Cameron because he is an Artist/Filmmaker and Shiyoon Kim because he’s the best Character Designer to me.

- WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORKS
Representation. I don’t see many characters/stories in mainstream animation that remind me of being Nigerian or African.

- IN YOUR OWN WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR KINDA CONTENTS
Unapologetically African and Afrocentric

- PERSONALLY WHICH ASPECT IS DEMANDING; STARTING OR FINISHING A PROJECT
Finishing.. Ideas are easy to come by but it takes discipline and diligence to go through the entire process for viable content to be produced.

- HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR INDUSTRY
Nigerians are rising up to the occasion. There are a couple of studios that have existed here for many years. There are also new projects gaining ground internationally like Iwaju which was greenlit by Disney.

- DO YOU FEEL THERE'S A GOOD SUPPORT ATMOSPHERE IN THE ART INDUSTRY
Yes, I believe there is. Artists are approachable humans that are willing to help. Even on projects within studios, I don’t see Artists competing but complimenting each other.

- MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING AN ARTIST
Having a voice that people care about. Artists have thrived in every form of civilization known to man as historians, scientists and entertainers. This legacy is what makes us invaluable and I believe, fulfilling.

- ONE THING YOU HOPE TO IMPROVE ON IN YOUR INDUSTRY
I hope to change how stories are told to impact the worldview of Africa. The mainstream media has portrayed Africa in a low light and animation a way that can change that.

- HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR INDUSTRY
I just finished school, living with my parents, and African parents don’t see gaming to be of any relevance. Nigeria has very bad network for gaming I will not mention names but pings are really bad so that’s another problem

Yes, Nigerian games support eachother cause it’s not easy to be a gamer in this country due to economic and financial reasons

Game Review
QUEEN AMINA ⭐⭐ (2/5)
Testers on this review (6)

I will start off by saying we at GNC respect the work and dedication put into every game we come across or review. There's a popular saying in Nigeria "If you think say e dey easy go do am". In other words, don't undermine people's labour. But sentiments asides, these apps are created fully for the intention to satisfy a target gaming audience and our job at GNC is to create an unbiased review so as to help the developers consider what to modify, add or subtract to keep creating the best experience for their audience.

About Game
So prior to actually playing the game I barely knew anything about the character Queen Amina. Developed by Bison Play BisonPlay the game concept originates from a Northern Nigerian female character who in summary is the wonder woman of her time... well even till now. 😌 Had to go back to the history books cause of this game and I must commend the developers for that initiative. It's time our African roots and legends are immortalized in more ways than one in this 21st century. The game was released early 2021 & available on both Google and Apple stores.

Pros ➕
- Historical reference is pretty dope, a game that teaches you something new asides combo move is educational 👌🏾
- The game's OSTs are really cool, the beautiful made it a vibe.
- Controls and combos are simple and pretty straight forward
- The graphics are 2D and are ok

Cons ➖
- Unless you're big on 2D adventure games, there isn't much to enjoy long term in this game for now
- There are bugs experienced both in the active gameplay scenes and some during purchasing the full game version. Devs should fix that up when releasing next update
- More combo options would be nice

Miscellaneous ⚠️ (Banter from the team)
- Modify the story to accommodate more chapters, modes and villains (Kenny)
- I think it's cool, reminds me of Prince of Persia it just needs more combos, moves and chapters (Bee)
- The jumping power is 🤦🏾‍♂️ (Kenny)
- After playing two chapters, I'm left wanting more (Amy)
- I actually enjoyed the game but for the bugs (Kami)

My content is bringing art to life by mashing up music, cartoon characters, sports, stories and entertainment.

- PERSONALLY WHICH ASPECT IS DEMANDING; STARTING OR FINISHING A PROJECT
Starting my projects is definitely the hardest part of my projects. Coming up with the visuals in my head can be quite challenging sometimes.

- HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR INDUSTRY
People love to be entertained and escape reality even if it's for a couple of seconds. My art gives that wow factor, and gets my audience wanting more.

- DO YOU FEEL THERE'S A GOOD SUPPORT ATMOSPHERE IN THE ART INDUSTRY
To be honest there is, but there is still room for improvement.

- WHAT'S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING AN ARTIST
I can express my ideas however I want and whenever I want.

- ONE THING YOU HOPE TO IMPROVE ON IN YOUR INDUSTRY
I want to take my art to the next level and be more confident with my works.
