Food Security: Kwara set to provide additional interventions for farmers

•Opens portal for farms capturing

Kwara State government has called on commercial farms, private farms and small holder farmers in clusters to contact the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to have their lands captured.

According to the State government, this will enable the captured commercial farms, private farms and small holder farmers to benefit from another set of numerous government interventions.

The Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON, in a statement on Thursday, said, “We must ensure all cleared lands in Kwara is put to effective use and that we clear more lands to farm in order to achieve food security.”

Concerned commercial farms, private farms and small holder farmers who want to request for capturing have between today, March 22 and Friday, March 29 to apply.

CERTIFICATE FORGERY: JUDGE DIRECTS POLICE TO ARRAIGN HON.SABA ADAMU IN COURT TO FACE JUSTICE

In a significant legal development, a High Court of justice sitting in Apo, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has directed the police to arraign a Lawmaker representing Edu/Moro/Patigi Federal Constituency of Kwara State, Adamu Saba who is facing five counts charge of alleged certificate falsification, to face justice.

During today's session on March 21, 2024, the presiding Judge, Angela O. Otaluka, was visibly annoyed over the police failure to present the suspect in court, directed that Hon. Saba Adamu, the suspected certificate forger, be arraigned in court promptly to face justice.

As a result of failure of the police prosecutor to produce the suspect in court and coupled with an application for adjournment by the prosecutor, F. G. Gabriel Esq. to either the 27th or 28th day of May, 2024, the court struck out the case for lack of diligent prosecution on the part of the police pending when the police will be ready to produce and arraign the said lawmaker in court.

The Judge said despite five previous adjournments, the police failed to produce the accused/defendant, Hon. Saba Adamu in court, prompting the court to take decisive action and express dissatisfaction with the police.

Consequently, the court struck out the case, saying the case shall be reopened again when the police are able to produce the suspect Hon. Saba Adamu in the law court.

It will be recalled that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) instituted a five-count criminal charge marked CR/94/2022, bordering on the alleged falsification of academic certificate against the member representing Edu/Moro/Patigi Federal Constituency, Ahmed Saba Adamu.

The lawmaker allegedly forged a bachelor of science in economics certificate from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Ahmed Saba Adamu was alleged to have used the forged certificate to secure mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, contrary to section 363 of the Penal code Law.

Earlier this afternoon, LEYTA joined LADDU National Executives and members of Lafiagi Emirate Council when the officials of Federal Fire Service, Kwara State Command arrived in Lafiagi for the inspection of the approved fire service outpost station.

The outpost station is to be located at the former Local Government Department of Works along Local Government Secretariat.

The situation of an outpost station is a product of collective community effort of all relevant stakeholders in collaboration with LEYTA. This will address the perennial challenges of fire outbreaks in Lafiagi and its environs especially with the set the dry season right upon us.

WATER SCARCITY IN LAFIAGI EMIRATE: A CALL TO ACTION

Within the metropolis, the erratic nature of water supply plunges its inhabitants into a cycle of uncertainty and deprivation. Families grapple with the daily ordeal of securing clean water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, often resorting to unsafe sources or enduring long queues at limited distribution points from unsafe sources that could cause waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

The ramifications of this water crisis extend far beyond mere inconvenience. Health hazards loom large as waterborne diseases lurk in contaminated sources, threatening the well-being of the populace, particularly the vulnerable segments such as children and the elderly. Moreover, the absence of reliable water access impedes educational pursuits, as children are forced to prioritize fetching water in the morning before leaving for school therefore getting late.

Northern Kwara and the Shadow of Miscalculation

In light of Kwara North's underdevelopment, I once gained a great deal of insight from my role model about underdevelopment of Kwara North. In fact, I wouldn't be brave enough to state that there is still an area with at least seven first-class emirs where social amenities aren't even a source of pride. It is undeniable that for the previous twenty (20) years, Kwara Northerners have suffered from a lack of access to decent roads, schools, healthcare facilities, water, and electricity, despite casting a bloc votes for PDP and APC regimes.

Lafiagi Water Works, which was reported to have undergone a makeover in the last dispensation, was anticipated by the inhabitants of the neighbourhood to have potable drinkable water in every axis. *Where are the whopping millions squandered in the name of rehabilitation?*

Another local government that has produced a *Deputy Governor for two terms, a senator for two terms, a minister, two different speakers of the state assembly and a House of Representatives for 16 years* has been unable to get an electrical pole, let alone bring light to the three emirates councils. This demonstrates that the previous and current governments do not have good intentions for the Kwara North senatorial district, particularly the communities with three first-class emirs and the local government area, which have been contributing significantly to the state internal generated revenue (IGR). It is my conviction that the current government is no longer different from the previous administration, given the blame game and shouts that ushered in the APC government in the zone.

On another note, the issue of bad roads or no roads in Kwara North is another hot topic of discussion. Of the five local government areas that make up Kwara North, Moro is the only one where pregnant women can drive without fear of being misled, as is the case in Patigi, Edu, Kaiama, and Baruteen LGAs in the state.

As a passionate community development advocate, the marginalisation of these areas in comparison to the two senatorial districts has become extremely concerning, and I appealed to the government of the day to invest heavily in education, water, road networks, and other critical areas to restore the anomalies and bring back hope to the zone.

We have worked tirelessly for the party and made significant contributions to the success of the APC government from top to bottom, and the zone should not be considered as such.

I am also aware of some craft marginalisation caused by some of our stakeholders; those folks should be made aware that power, money, and influence are fleeting and have no lasting effects.

Yuletide: Shelve Festive Vacation, Focus On Governance, Shettima Urges NEC Members

Vice President Kashim Shettima has charged members of the National Economic Council to ignore the idea of a vacation in the yuletide and carry on with issues of governance to ease the burden of Nigerians hanging on their shoulders.

He charged the Council members to be alive to the demands of Nigerians noting that as the year draws to a close, none of them in the chamber should anticipate a vacation.

This was made known in a statement shared on Shettima's Facebook account on Thursday.

He noted that the weight of responsibilities rests upon the shoulders of the leaders which they cannot escape, adding that the leaders will be returning after the yuletide celebration to be judged by the promises made to Nigerians.

Speaking on Thursday during the 138th meeting of the National Economic Council which was held virtually, Shettima said that President Bola Tinubu has shown that the challenges inherited by his administration are surmountable and has offered visionary leadership and presented a coherent development plan to assist in the country’s pursuit of order, abundance, and stability.

The post read, "Today at the 138th meeting of the National Economic Council, I charged Council members to shelve the idea of a vacation in the yuletide and carry on with issues of governance to ease the burden of Nigerians hanging on their shoulders.

"Following deliberations on critical economic matters and assessments of potential short-term, medium and long-term strategies for addressing pressing economic issues, NEC set up the committees on Economic Affairs, as well as the committee on Crude Oil Theft and Management.

"Both committees are to be headed by Kwara State Governor, Alh AbdulRahman AbdulRazak, and his Imo State counterpart, Senator Hope Uzodimma, respectively."

Niger Gov’t Declares 7-Day Holiday For Christmas, New Year Celebrations.

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has announced a seven-day public holiday for workers to commemorate the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Bologi Ibrahim, released a statement on Thursday in Minna confirming this decision.
According to Ibrahim, the holiday period will commence on Friday, December 22, 2023, and extend through to January 1, 2024. He stressed that this extended holiday period aims to enable workers to celebrate these significant occasions with their families and loved ones.
Additionally, Ibrahim revealed that the government plans to distribute food items to government officials. The intention is for these officials to share the food among the less privileged individuals in their respective localities and wards during the holiday season.

Quoting Governor Bago, Ibrahim highlighted the Governor’s call to officials, encouraging them not to confine themselves to Minna but to actively participate in sharing food with the underprivileged in their local communities and wards.

Senator Saliu Mustapha Gifts New Laptop to Just Event Online Publication

Just Event Online Publication, a prominent online media outlet in Kwara State, has expressed gratitude to Senator Saliu Mustapha, the representative of Kwara Central Senatorial District, for his philanthropic gesture of presenting a new laptop to the publication.
