THEM SAY
A group of concerned citizens took so much pain to meet one of my sisters-in-law who, they claimed her husband was flirting around with a beautiful lady.
They were very apprehensive because this kind of news could tear a family apart if not well handled. Meanwhile all of them but my sister were divorcees, not by their own makings but as a result of circumstances beyond their controls.
The said victim was a big fashion designer with many employees and apprentices so she had no time to know what her husband does out there or what was going on in town. It must take caring friends like these ones to save her from an impeding doom.
Considering the delicate nature of their mission, they schemed a wonderful means to communicate the message. They begged their friend to spare them an hour of one of her always busy days to take her out as she had been a faithful tailor, a loyal customer for over ten years.
On the day agreed date, they took her to one of the most exquisite restaurants in town. Orders were made each personās favourite dish. She kept wondering what the occasion was as she had just celebrated her 40th birthday but they made sure to throw in the appropriate jokes or gist to divert her attention.
When they had had enough fun, Lucy tried to break the news to her.
Ehenā¦ my dear...
Her eyes popped open as Lucy gestured towards her.
You know we have been customer for over a decadeā¦ even before that, you and I have been friends since way back. I want to...
āMy dear, this this thing is simple. No be something wey you go stammer, come de choke on topā¦ tell her. After all who is she supposed to hear it from?ā Meg cut in.
She is known to say things as she sees them, or rather as the come to her thought and regret or apologise for them later if need be. Her friends call her leaking mouth behind her back š
By this time, her mouth hung open and her hands were mid-air in bewilderment. Her eye balls rolled from one of the friends to another as she wondered who would finally break the news to her.
āDo you know Ije?ā Lucy picked up her line again.
āNope! Whoās that? ā
"Well, sheā¦ sheās a young girl. Look, Iāve been trying to tell you this but itās hardā¦ So as I was saying, Ije is a young girl, not bad in looks but sheās got knuckle knees." The three friends laughed but their guest was getting tensed up by the suspense.
Look, sorry if I offend you. Your husband has been flirting with this girl from the College of Education. Theyāve been seen at City restaurant, Dunken Pepper, Liyafa Palace in blue, teal green, red... In fact, they've been painting the town red. Itās no news but youāve been rather too busy.
Silence fell on the room. Lucy held her head in her two hands and Jane looked the other way. The one minute of silence felt like forever. Then, the guest did the most surprising thing. She sighed deeply. Opened the water bottle on the table, drank heavily and sighed again. The friends were waiting for the appropriate response.
She started by apologising to them.
"I have seen the uneasiness on your faces but if this is what you have been finding hard to tell me, it means I have been a bad friend."
āWell, let me ask you a question.ā
They gazed in amazement.
"If you keep taking āegusiā every day, wonāt you get tired of it? In my humble opinion, he who eats āegusiā should sometimes try okra or āOgbonoāsoup sometimes no matter how sweet the egusi may taste.
You see? Just let my sweet husband enjoy himself."
